Equity Market Performance during November 2018As the crude oil prices weakened giving some respite to the depreciating rupee, the equity markets also rebounded giving around 5% returns to the investors after two consecutive months of negative returns. Amidst all this, FIIs also turned out to be the net buyers into the markets for this month. The Indian rupee has appreciated by 5.9% against the US dollar during the month and closed the month at nearly 4-month high of Rs.69.58 per dollar as on 30th November 2018 as against Rs. 73.96 per dollar a month ago.

Even the global sentiments turned favourable for the equity markets, as there were signs of a trade deal between the US and China and also due to dovish comments by the Chair of the Federal Reserve.

The festive season brought cheers to the consumption story which was also reflected in the Consumer Durables and Auto sector indices giving 7.2% and 5.1% returns respectively. Further, the rupee appreciation brought some negative returns for the sectors relying heavily on the exports and IT and Healthcare sector closed the month with -1.6% and -2.7% returns respectively.

While the valuations have turned reasonable in the equity markets, investing in large caps is more advisable at this stage, as such stocks are more resilient to the market volatility. Further, fresh investments may be considered to be made in a staggered manner through Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) so as to achieve the long-term financial goals.

Monthly SIP Inflows

The mutual fund industry has continued to attract healthy inflows from the retail investors in this month as well. During the month of November 2018, an amount of Rs. 7,985 crores has been invested through SIPs which is 35% higher than the amount of Rs. 5,893 crores collected in November 2017. On a sequential basis, the SIP inflows were equal to the inflows last month. As such, SIPs have helped total inflows into the mutual fund sector for an amount of Rs. 60,457 crores in 8 months of this financial year 2018-19, as against Rs. 67,190 during the 12 months of the financial year 2017-18.

AUM Data - Investments in Mutual Funds The markets have continued to be in a phase of consolidation, even while the signs of recovery in the financial sector were visible. However, with the General elections due within next 6 months, the investments into the markets are also consolidating. The AUM increased by 8% on a sequential basis from Rs. 22.24 lakh crore as of 31st October 2018 to Rs. 24.03 lakh crore as of 30th November 2018, primarily led by the stronger inflows of Rs. 1.36 lakh crore into liquid/ money market funds. The equity mutual funds (including arbitrage funds, balanced funds, and ELSS) saw net inflows of Rs. 11,005 crores during the month, as against Rs. 15,302 crores in October 2018. The cumulative net inflows into equity funds for the 8 months into the current financial year stand at Rs. 98,078 crores.
