“Let me extend my

heartfelt congratulations to

Nelson Mandela University

on organising the FIFA/

CIES Executive Programme

since 2007. Thanks to

its excellent work, the

University has made it

possible to train dozens

of sports managers today

working in South Africa and

in other countries on the

African continent. This is a

fantastic legacy of the 2010

FIFA World Cup.”

– Gianni Infantino, FIFA President

The unique academic partnership between the Centre International d’Étude du Sport (CIES) in Neuchâtel (Switzerland) and Nelson Mandela University, formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth was established in January 2007.

The collaboration was created within the framework of the FIFA 2010 initiative “Win in Africa – with Africa”. The objective of the project was to establish long-term programmes of development and solidarity in order to reinforce and perpetuate the heritage and legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

In terms of the agreement between the then NMMU and CIES, the University was to present a one-year CIES-developed short learning programme that would make a meaningful contribution to the training of highly qualified sport managers for South and Southern Africa in the run-up to 2010 but also beyond.

25 September 2007 saw the start of the very first edition. 19 students, all of them local, took up their seats in the Seminar Room of the University’s Second Avenue Campus.

This group of pioneers came to be known as the “guinea pigs” for obvious reasons. Ten years later the qualification has progressed to being a truly international programme, attracting students from all over South Africa as well as other English-speaking countries in Africa.

In 2010 the programme saw its first enrolment from Europe and the 2017 edition has a record number of 36 students, 16 of whom are international students, with one coming all the way from the West Indies.

As we look back, we can also proudly reflect on the many success stories coming from the programme. Alumni have been promoted in their work, have ventured into new professional endeavours, have been appointed into leadership roles within sport and have enhanced the professionalism with which their sporting codes are being managed.

Students of this programme have won accolades, such as the FIFA/CIES International University Network Prize, while others have continued to blossom in the field of academia by completing qualifications such as the prestigious FIFA Master and other international and local Master programmes.

Celebrating a 10-year partnership

It is evident from the Nelson Mandela University*/FIFA/CIES Executive Programme in Sport Management has made significant strides over the past decade. This success can be attributed to the following:

• The diverse profile and calibre of students that have made up the classes in each edition.• The quality of the programme content which covers all elements of sport management.• The exceptional ability and expertise of the module facilitators and support staff.• The use of highly experienced international and local sport industry practitioners as guest speakers.• The active and fully supportive role of the CIES in the partnership.• The values that undergird Nelson Mandela University – excellence, respect for the natural environment, respect for

diversity, taking responsibility, Ubuntu and integrity – and which those who run the programme have embraced.

This programme has, and continues to succeed in fulfilling its mandate in relation to the FIFA 2010 “Win in Africa - with Africa” campaign and is a shining light of the legacy of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The need for highly competent and well trained sport managers is however as relevant today as it was 10 years ago. As such, it is hoped that this highly successful partnership between Nelson Mandela University and CIES will continue to prosper and grow into the future.

‘This is an internationally recognised programme, unlike any other, which is unbeaten in terms of what it offers.’Vernon Oosthuizen 2017

Why so successful?

*Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University or NMMU officially became Nelson Mandela University on 20 July 2017 when it was renamed.
