    York Revolution Baseball stadium

    A wonderful new complex in downtown York with plenty of seating to enjoy an oldfashion baseball game. Includes plenty of food and drinks inside with memorabiliato remember the evening. Also includes a bronze memorial statue of BrooksRobinson to evoke the history of baseball.

    The Yorktowne Hotel

    Built in the 1920s, the Yorktowne Hotel stands eleven stories tall and is in the

    heartland of York City. It is a landmark for revealing the history of York in the

    roaring twenties. Includes 121 spacious rooms and two restaurants!

    Central Market is a momentous farmers market that opened its doors in 1888 and isin the National Register of Historic Places. The market sells produce, fresh seafood,deli products, fresh meats, and many other areas of expertise along with breakfastand lunch restaurants.

    Agricultural and Industrial Museum

    Agricultural artifacts produced or used in the county over three centuries are put onview and include locally made wagons, tractors, steam engines and farm tools.

    Yorks industrial payments toward World War Two are exhibited as well. Yorkmanufactured items such as the automobiles, a Conestoga wagon, and a 1937Aeronca K airplane are incorporated in the tour. The museum is self-guided.

    Bonham House

    From 1875 to 1965 the Bonham family occupied this house. A 1920s library room,an 1870s bedroom, plus other rooms in this three-story house reflect the periodfrom the 1850s to the 1930s. Through a guided tour, visitors learn about life for anupper-middle class family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

    Colonial Complex

    Four buildings reflect both private and public lives in early York. The Golden Plough

    Tavern, built in 1741, The General Gates House, built in1751and reflects the year1778 when General Horatio Gates occupied the house, the Court House whereCongress met, and the Barnett Bobb Log House, built with squared timbers andshows family life in the 1830s.

    Stationed in the historic Royal Fire House, the museum holds collections from themore than 200 years of fire-fighting in York County including horse drawn firecarriages, vintage fire trucks, firefighters uniforms, and photographs.

    Historical Society Museum

    The historical Society Museum has 10,000 square feet donated to exhibits of Yorks

    history and an extensive library. Some of those displays include the Street of Shops- Apothecary, Cabinetmaker, Printer and Toy Shop, a picturesque Looking glass' -

    The Drawings of Lewis Miller (1796-1882), Grandfather's Clock - Tall Case Clocksfrom the Collection, and Rutter's Discovery Center for Children - Special interactiveexhibit for children.

    1. Machines Ice Yorks Reputation

    Artist: Dan Hendrix

    The manufacture of ice-making machinery on thissite dates back to 1895 when construction began onthe York Manufacturing Company's factory. Whenconstruction work ended the next year, the factoryboasted state-of-the-art equipment. Today, YorkInternational is a direct descendant of YorkManufacturing Company. York International's unitscool the Empire State Building, the Kremlin, andthe English Channel Tunnel.

    2. From Slavery to Success Story

    William C. Goodridge was born into slavery in 1806 in Maryland. At an early age,Goodridge was apprenticed to the Rev. William Dunn of York. He was freed in 1822and opened a barbershop on York's Centre Square several years later. William C.Goodridge's house, store, and rail line were used to transport escaped slaves alongthe Underground Railroad. Goodridge died in Minneapolis in 1873.

    Congress adopted the articles on Nov. 15, 1777, and sent the document to the 13colonies for ratification. The Articles officially became law on March 1, 1781, whenMaryland ratified the document. The Articles provided for a loose confederation ofindependent states and became the nation's first constitution. It ensured that eachof the states would retain authority, and no tyrannical central government wouldprevail.

    7. Courage Unites Four Chaplains

    Thousands of Americans lost their lives crossing the perilous waters of the NorthAtlantic in World War II. Four chaplains -- George L. Fox, Vt., Methodist; Clark V.Poling, N.Y., Dutch Reformed; Alexander D. Goode, York, Jewish; and John P.

    Washington, N.J., Catholic -- were among the dead. The religious leaderssurrendered their seats in lifeboats and removed their own life jackets to give tofour sailors. Survivors recall seeing the four chaplains with arms linked and hearingthem pray together as the ship went down. Without thought to their differences, thefour chaplains united as one.

    8. A Year to Treasure the First 250

    York was established in 1741. Two hundred and fifty years later, the county threw ayear-long birthday party. A stellar group of civic, business and government leadersformed the 250th Anniversary Commission with the mission of creating ameaningful celebration. This celebration's goal was to recognize York County'smany contributions to history and to look toward its future.

    11. A Fair Crop of Yorks Fortunes

    The York Fair dates back to 1765 when Thomas Penn, son of William Penn, issued acharter for the community to hold two fairs a year -- in the spring and the fall.

    Today, the fair is held each September on a 120-acre tract west of York's downtown.It attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year.

    12. His Experiment Gives Breath to All

    Artist: Wayne Fettro

    George Holtzapple had been practicing medicine less than a year in 1885 when hereceived an urgent message that 16-year-old Frederick Gable was fighting againstpneumonia. "Give me breath!" the boy pleaded to Holtzapple. The young doctorexperimented to produce oxygen, the life-saving element of air. The oxygenrelieved Gable, and he soon recovered. The physician served on York Hospital's stafffrom 1904 until 1944 and died in 1946.

    13. Printers Press Freedoms Case

    Artist: Alan Wylie

    Congress urged its Committee of Intelligence to "take the most speedy andeffectual measures for getting a printing press erected in this town . . . for thepurpose of conveying to the public, the intelligence that Congress may, from time totime, receive." The Philadelphia firm of Hall & Sellers moved its press, once ownedby Benjamin Franklin, to the relocated capital.

    14. Potter's Goods Stand Time's Test

    The Pfaltzgraff Co. has long been the most prominent part of that local industry.Pfaltzgraff started in 1811 on a farm in Conewago Township. It is said to be theoldest, continuously operating commercial pottery manufacturer in the UnitedStates.

    15. His Muscles Gave County a Lift

    Artist: Max Mason

    Bob Hoffman, a native of Georgia, started York Barbell Corp. in 1932 and preachedthe gospel of physical fitness throughout his life as a U.S. Olympic coach,businessman and philanthropist. Hoffman combined his love for weight lifting with akeen business sense to create York as Muscletown U.S.A. Always a promoter, healso pushed York nationally as a softball capital.

    16. Farmers Market Countys Bounty

    This open-air market was commenced in York on Wednesdays and Saturdays in1755, six years after the county was founded. Five large indoor market houses inthe York area gradually replaced the open-air markets in the late 1800s.

    17. Childrens Care Comes Home

    The Children's Home of York started as a home to aid white orphans in theaftermath of the Civil War. As the decades passed, counselors, volunteers, andfoster parents cared for children of all ages and races.

    18. York Countys United Front

    The York Plan pooled community workers, machinery, and material to create theindustrial power to handle huge defense contracts. "Do what you can with what youhave" became the philosophy of this 15-point, organized local effort to help themilitary fight abroad. The York community received international accolades for itsingenuity and determination in designing, engineering and manufacturing parts andproducts.

    This Visitor Center and Museum features illustrations of old-time American candycraftsmen. You'll see many special display cases filled with wooden sugar molds,glass candy jars, and many other priceless antiques. You'll also see a video of theWolfgang candy-making process along with a complete history of the Wolfgangfamily.

    Indian Steps Museum

    The museum itself is 60 ft. X 60 ft. wide and 2 stories high with massive chestnuttimbers and very large stones walls. Especially impressive are the over 10,000Indian relics embedded in the outside walls, walkways and indoor floors and otherparts of this great building. This museum is great for experiencing the true time ofthe Indians and also includes a gift shop.

    At this park there are one hundred fifty-seven acres of meadow, woodland andaquatic habitats. It was established in 1968 and donated by the Bob Hoffman familyand named after President Richard M. Nixon. There are over six miles of trails toexplore nature since Nixon Park is designed primarily for quiet observation of theenvironment. There is Dramatic artwork and over 180 specimens from 15 differentcountries around the world. Nixon Park is a good way to show students the history

    of environmental preservation in York.

    Wallace Cross Mill

    The mill is believed to have been constructed in 1826 and was operatedcontinuously until the 1980's taking its water power from Rambo Run. The mill wasgiven to York County by the owner Harry Cross in 1979. The restoration focus is the1950 era; the pinnacle of Harry Cross' career when the mill ran 24 hours a day and

    seven days a week. The mill's first floor, including the office, is the area open to thepublic. The exhibits and demonstrations appeal to all ages but especially fifththrough seventh grade students of Pennsylvania history.

    Established as an assembly facility in 1973, Harley-Davidson Vehicle Operations inYork, PA. is the largest Harley-Davidson manufacturing facility. The York facilitycovers more than 230 acres and has over 1.5 million square feet under roof. At theVaughn L. Beals Tour Center, you'll explore exhibits that detail the plant's history,and guide you through the manufacturing and assembly processes.
