CHARLIE MONTOYODURHAM BULLS MANAGER (2007-2014)

2014 marks Charlie Montoyo’s 18th season as a minor league manager, with every year coming in the Tampa Bay Rays organization, and his eighth consecutive season in the Bull City. In 2013 the native of Manati, Puerto Rico became just the second Durham Bulls manager to ever reach the 500-

win plateau with the team, following in the footsteps of International League Hall of Famer Bill Evers along with winning his second IL Manager of the Year Award. Montoyo begins the 2014 season just 56 wins shy of surpassing Evers for the most wins in Bulls history.

Montoyo began his managerial career in 1997 with the Rookie-level Princeton Devil Rays, before advancing a season later to manage the Hudson Valley Renegades of the Short-Season NY-Penn League, compiling an 89-56 record between the two seasons. It was in 1999 Montoyo made the jump to managing full-season ball when he took the helm of the Charleston RiverDogs in the South Atlantic League for two seasons, posting a 138-143 mark.

The skipper then headed west for the 2001 and 2002 seasons, managing the Advanced-A Bakersfield Blaze in the California League, again finishing right around the .500 mark with a 140-141 record. The skipper then spent the following four seasons at the helm of the Rays’ Double-A affiliates, spending one season in Orlando before the team moved to Montgomery, Ala. It was 2006, Montoyo’s final season as Double-A skipper, that he captured his first championship as the team won the Southern League behind a 77-win regular season and a 6-1 playoff mark.

The 2007 season began Montoyo’s illustrious career with the Bulls, leading the team to five consecutive playoff berths in his first five seasons via five South Division titles. 2009 saw another Montoyo-led team reach the top of its respective league, as Durham captured its first Governors’ Cup crown since 2003 before defeating the Memphis Redbirds in 11

innings to secure the Triple-A National Championship title, earning Montoyo Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the Year award. Then in 2011, the skipper hit two personal milestones, winning his 1,000th career game in a win over the Norfolk Tides on July 9th, and earning his 400th win as Bulls manager on August 27th in 3-2 victory over interstate rival the Charlotte Knights.

After 2012 marked the first time the Bulls failed to make the playoffs under Montoyo’s direction, the team righted the ship in 2013, again winning the South Division and posting the third-best record of all full-season minor league teams. The team then stormed through the International League playoffs, going 6-1 en route to Montoyo’s second Governors’ Cup crown before falling in the Triple-A National Championship Game, 2-1, to the Omaha Storm Chasers.

Outside of the Rays organization the 48-year-old has been lauded for his on-field work, earning the Mike Coolbaugh Award in 2009, given by Minor League Baseball to an individual for their outstanding mentoring of young players on the field. In addition, the former Louisiana Tech standout has twice been named as a coach of the World Team at the MLB Futures Game, and served under Jose Oquendo as a coach for the Puerto Rican national team in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

PLAYING CAREER: The Bulls Manager enjoyed a 10-year playing career as an infielder within the Brewers, Expos and Phillies organizations. His lone major league experience came in September 1993 when he spent 27 days with the Montreal Expos. He was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth round of the 1987 June MLB Amateur Draft.

PERSONAL: Montoyo was born on October 17, 1964 in Manati, PR and currently resides in Tucson, AZ. He attended San Jose De Anza Junior College in San Jose, CA and Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA. He and his wife, Samantha, have two children, Tyson (10) and Alexander (6).

“BULL DURHAM”“Bull Durham” is a 1988 romantic comedy based around the team and players of the Durham Bulls. The film, shot in Durham, N.C. and the surrounding areas, was given a budget of just $9 million but grossed over $50 million in North America. Sports Illustrated ranked it the #1 Greatest Sports Movie of All Time while The Moving Arts Film Journal ranked it #3 on its list of the 25 Greatest Sports Movies of All Time. Writer/Director Ron Shelton played Minor League Baseball for five years, reaching as high as Triple-A with the Rochester Red Wings. The scenes for the Durham Bulls home games were filmed at Durham Athletic Park, the home of the Bulls until the team moved to Durham Bulls Athletic Park in 1995. The now famous “Bull” sign that reads “Hit Bull, Win Steak” was originally a prop for the movie that did not exist before production. After filming wrapped, the team kept the Bull, however it soon deteriorated, and the team purchased another, but it was later destroyed in a hurricane. The third Bull the team purchased is the current one, which sits atop the DBAP’s 32-foot high “Blue Monster.” 39 players have “won free steaks” since the team moved to the DBAP.

THE HOLD RULEThe Hold is not an official statistic, but it was created as a way to credit middle relief pitchers for a successful outing. If a reliever comes into a game to protect a lead, gets at least one out and leaves without giving up that lead, he is credited with a hold. You cannot get a save and a hold in the same game.

MINOR LEAGUE FREE AGENCY RULESSix (6) years after a minor league player’s first season ends with an organization, if the player is not on the major league 40-man roster, he is eligible for minor league free agency. (If a player is on the 40-man roster, this rule does not apply.)

Sometimes referred to as a “six-year minor league free agent,” the name comes from six renewable years on a player’s contract. The rules differ for players who have been released by their first organization before the expiration of the six-year period. When a player signs with a new club, the new club can choose to sign the player for however many years remain before the expiration of their sixth reneweable contract.

MINOR LEAGUE ROSTER GUIDELINESIn the minors, the rosters are managed in quite a different manner than the standard 25-man rosters in the majors. Minor League teams keep two separate lists of players. The first is the Active List which, like in the NFL, denotes which players are eligible for the current game while the second list, the Reserve List, is the team’s entire roster.

Triple-A and Double-A clubs are allowed to put 25 players on the Active List. The Reserve List limit, however, is always 38 players for Triple-A teams and 37 players for Double-A squads.

At other levels, the Active List limit is 25 players for Single-A teams, 30 for Short-Season teams and 35 for Rookie teams. All levels below Double-A allow clubs a Reserve Limit of 35 players. Below Single-A, only 25 players may actualy get into a single game. Players may be loaned to other minor league organizations, but must be returned by September 30 of that season.

As in the majors, there are two Disabled Lists in the Minor Leagues. The normal disabled list only has a seven-day minimum as opposed to the 15 days used as the limit for the majors. The 60-day DL, or Emergency Disabled List, works the same as in the majors; the player doesn’t count against any roster limits but cannot be reinstated until either 60 days have passed or the season ends.
