Reseating or replacing SMS Compact Flash

SMS Voltage Adjustment Guide December 2018

Procedure:

1.) Remove the seven screws and nuts that attach internal black box to the heat sink

2.) Remove the Sensor cable and nut that mounts the sensor connector to the SMS fiberglass box.




3.) Remove the 4 Baseplate Screws. Then unplug the Ethernet connector from the SMS




4.) Remove 4-20mA connectors from communication board




5.) Remove ribbon cables from communication board. Note where the red conductor is on both

because during reassembly it will need to be reassembled. The cable closest to the display has the

red conductor farthest away from the display




6.) Remove the two black sheet metal screws halfway up the box at the front and the rear of the box.

These screws are for the motherboard enclosure.




7.) Remove the second two sheet metal screws on the other side of the box halfway up. The one in

the front near the sensor input cable has a ground wire that needs to be removed as well




8.) Remove Motherboard power supply cable




9.) Remove motherboard assembly screws. Note plastic washers on both sides. The motherboard

ground plane is isolated from the aluminum box. This is important to remember when

reassembling the motherboard to the aluminum motherboard, power supply enclosure box.




10.) Turn motherboard over and reseat the compact flash firmly into the socket.

11.) Reassembly reversing the steps above

12.) Provide 24VDC power to the SMS insert assembly. Attach the sensor to the SMS to give the

5VDC power supply the proper load. Adjust the 5 Volt DC supply potentiometer until the voltage

reads 5.9-6.1VDC. Turn potentiometer adjustment screw Clockwise to increase the voltage.

13.) Check the DC voltage between these two points should read between 5.9-6.1 VDC




14.) Before reassembling the SMS run the box with sensor and sensor cable attached for proper load

for two hours to make sure the adjusted voltage remains constant.

15.) Reassemble the SMS by reversing the steps above.
