ST Tell us about your background how you got interested in turfmanagement and what your specific responsibilities are now How hasmembership in the STMA helped your career
Brooks I have been involved with growing grass most of my lifehowever not always as an athletic playing surface Until about 5 yearsago I grew grass for our familys beef cattle
I received a BS degree in Animal Science from Clemson and thenafter deciding to teach I received a Masters in Ag Education with anemphasis in Turfgrass After arriving at Hillcrest in Simpsonville SC Iwent to a high school football game one night and saw the sorry statethat our fields were in And it just hit me here are some great turfgrasslabs The marriage of agriculture and athletics was born soon after avisit to the AD and coach
Our first year we only were responsible for the football game fieldI think that the first year was basically a test for us to see if we knewwhat we were doing The next year our responsibilities grew to includetwo practice fields baseball softball soccer and lacrosse We were now

After that long first year I knew that there was no way that T coulddo this job if 1 was going to have to re-invent the wheel with every taskthat I undertook so a friend told me about the South Carolina STMAand the STMA This has been by far the best organization thal I haveever been involved with as far as providing practical professionaladvice as well as incredible networking potential The STMA hasafforded me the opportunity to meet and gain knowledge and friend-ship with two of the most respected turfgrass managergt in my areaMike Echols head of athletic grounds for Clemson and Clark Coxwho is in the same position with the University of South Carolina Theimpact that they have had on my students lives is immeasurable andI would not even be dose to the position that T am in today without thehelp of these two The ST1lA has also afforded me the opportunity tomeet local vendors and sales reps for everything from my equipmentneeds to chemical and fertilized needs
ST whets yotU biggest challenge been this seasonBrooks Our biggest challenge has been trying to manage the
transition times Fall ball for baseball is generally going strong rightat the time that we need everybody off for a successful overseedingprocess Then when we are headed into playoffs and starting summertournaments on our field it is when we spray out our rye and ourBermuda is at its weakest It is hard to get people to understand thatthese two times of the year are critical for the overall quality of thefield and the field can not be beautiful 365 days out 01 the yearSometimes I just have to sit the coaches down and let them know thatthe field needs a rest if it is going to live up to their expectations therest of the season
ST What is the best part of the jobBrooks The best parl of my job is teaching young people about
what I feel is without a doubt the most exciting innovative andrewarding subject in the school system The implications ofSportsturf management incorporates math pant science agronomychemistry and agriculture into one exciting package for studentsOur class projects have real-world impact around our school on adaily basis Our work is not only graded by the teacher but also bythe student athletes as well as the community as a whole that usesour facilities bull

Lesson23 Volunteers whether players parents boostersor other supporters of the athletic prograJn can provide sub-stantial support for the field Let them choose between fundraismgand maintenance on the field Fundraising efforts are usually more effec-tive when they are working towards a tangible item like an irrigationsystem core aerator or mower Actual work on the field requires care-ful organization and supervision but once mastered it can result in sub-stantial pride in those involved and in community development

Lesson23 Volunteers whether players parents boostersor other supporters of the athletic prograJn can provide sub-stantial support for the field Let them choose between fundraismgand maintenance on the field Fundraising efforts are usually more effec-tive when they are working towards a tangible item like an irrigationsystem core aerator or mower Actual work on the field requires care-ful organization and supervision but once mastered it can result in sub-stantial pride in those involved and in community development

our members says Albino STMONY is seg-mented into eight zones and each zone has azone leader We ask the zone leader to set upa meeting place and time and T do the rest11 have a chapter meeting in one of thezones each month says Albino
He schedules the meetings in locations thathave had a particularly tough season Thatway he says the meeting and networkingsessions can help those sports turf managerssolve their problems

Lesson23 Volunteers whether players parents boostersor other supporters of the athletic prograJn can provide sub-stantial support for the field Let them choose between fundraismgand maintenance on the field Fundraising efforts are usually more effec-tive when they are working towards a tangible item like an irrigationsystem core aerator or mower Actual work on the field requires care-ful organization and supervision but once mastered it can result in sub-stantial pride in those involved and in community development

Lesson23 Volunteers whether players parents boostersor other supporters of the athletic prograJn can provide sub-stantial support for the field Let them choose between fundraismgand maintenance on the field Fundraising efforts are usually more effec-tive when they are working towards a tangible item like an irrigationsystem core aerator or mower Actual work on the field requires care-ful organization and supervision but once mastered it can result in sub-stantial pride in those involved and in community development

He schedules the meetings in locations thathave had a particularly tough season Thatway he says the meeting and networkingsessions can help those sports turf managerssolve their problems
