WHITPAINRECREATIONASSOCIATIONFIELDHOCKEYPROGRAM
“Adultvolunteerscommittedtofirmlyimplantingtheidealsofgoodsportsmanship,citizenship,communityinvolvement,andspiritedathleticparticipationintheboys
andgirlsofourcommunity”
WeareproudtoannouncethattheWRAFieldHockeyProgramisinits21styearof
communityservice.Since1996,theWRAhasprovidedfieldhockeyinstructiontoover500children
eachyear.Ourprogramhastakenonnewchallengeseveryyeartryingtoexposethechildrenofour
communitytothisneweraoffieldhockey.Thegamehasbecomefasterandnowdemandsmore
skillsthanever.TohelpmeetthesedemandstheWRAhasincreaseditseffortstoimproveour
existingfacilities.TheadditionoftheGermantownAcademy(GA)turffieldstoouravailablefacilities
forpracticesandSeniorDivisiongamesbeginningwiththe2012outdoorseasonwasveryexciting
andmostlikelyisthereasonforthecontinuedpopularityofourprogram.
WiththeadditionoftheGAturffields,weareabletoprovidetheSeniorDivisionwithgame
andtournamentplayonfullsizeregulationfields,allowingtheWRAprogramtoincreasetheteam
rostersizeto18/19players.Thischangenowprovidesmoreopportunitiesformoreplayersin
additiontoprovidingrealgamesituations.TheInstructionalDivisionwasexpandedin2013toallow
moreplayers(+24).Theformatchangein2012to7vs7fortheInstructionalandJuniorDivisionswas
returnedtotheprevious6vs6formatfor2013andbeyond,astheexpandedformatwasdeemed
lessmanageableforcoachesandlessproductiveforplayers.Withadditionoftheturfpracticesat
GA,alongwithALLgamesbeingplayedonturf(atbothWissahickonHighSchoolandGA),weare
abletocontinueprovidingourplayerswithaqualityprogramthatwillensurecontinued
improvementintheirskills.
TheWRAindoorprogramalsoremainspopularyearafteryearanditiseasytoseethelevel
ofplayimprovinginalltheplayersthatparticipate.Infact,themajorityofregisteredindoorplayers
goontoplayfortheupcomingoutdoorseason.

Allofthesechangeshavesurelymadeourprogramoneoftheverybestyouthfieldhockey
programsinthecountry.Thissuccesscouldonlyhavebeenpossiblebecauseofthededicated
parentsandhighschoolplayerswhohaveconsistentlyvolunteeredtheirtimeandeffortoverthese
last21years.Beginningin2013,asanaddedprotectionforplayers,allWRAminor/student
volunteersarerequiredtosignandsubmitaParentorGuardianAttestationformaswellasa
VolunteerAffirmationAgreementform.BothformsareavailableontheWRAwebsite.Inaddition,a
registeredadultwhohascompletedtheWRAandCommonwealthofPennsylvaniabackground
screeningrequirementsmustaccompanyanycoachundertheageof21atallpracticesandgames.
TheinformationthathasbeenprovidedinthisCoachingManualhasbeencreatedforyouto
useasareferenceguide.Wewouldappreciateanyfeedbackfromyouascoaches,playersand
parentsregardingthismanual’sstrengthsand/orweaknesses.Wecannotimpressuponyouenough
theneedtodedicatethetimeandefforttowardstheCONTINUEDdevelopmentofcoachesforour
fieldhockeyprogram.Wewillbeprovidingcoacheswithmanualsandlessonplanstohelpany
coachesthatwanttoimprovetheirknowledgeofthesport.Thankyouagainforvolunteeringto
participateinourprogramthisyear;wehopeyoufindtheexperienceinWRAFieldHockeya
rewardingone.Thechildrenofourcommunityareworththeextratimeandeffortthatwecangive
them.

• Thelong-hitprocedurewillbereplacedbya25-yardfreehiteffectivewiththeFall2016seasoninaccordancewithanNFHSrulechangeadoptedbyPIAA.TheNFHSwebsitestates“Beginningnextseason,theattackingteamwillbeawardeda25-yardfreehitinsteadofalonghitwhenadefenderunintentionallycausestheballtogoacrosstheendlineoriftheballglancesoffthestick/personofadefenderinthisareaandgoesacrosstheendline.Playwillbere-startedwiththeballonthe25-yardlinethatisinlinewithwhereitcrossedtheendline,andallproceduresfortakingafreehitwillapply.”TheSeniordivisionwillimplementthisruleexactlyaswritten.TheJuniorandIntermediatedivisionswilltakethe25-yardfreehit(formerlylonghit)onthefootballhashmarksontheirsmaller-dimensionfields.Insummary:longhitsnolongerexist.
• Inaccordancewiththe2015-16NFHSrules,adoptedbyPIAA,Seniordivisionplayersmayplaytheballinacontrolledmannerinanypartofthefieldwhentheballisatanyheight,includingabovetheshoulder,unlessthisisdangerousorleadstodanger.ThePIAAofficialsthatwehireforSeniordivisiongameswillbeaskedtocallthisnewruleverytight.RaisedstickswillnotbeallowedbyWRAinJuniororIntermediatedivisiongames.
• Tosimplifyplay,andintheabsenceofabroken(dashed)circle,theJuniorandIntermediatedivisionswilltakeanyfreehitawardedforafoulinsidethehashmarksatthespotofthefoul;theballmusttravel5yardsbeforebeinghitintothecircle.

1.1 WRAGeneralCoachingPhilosophy
“Toteachthegameoffieldhockeyinafunenvironmentandtoworkonchilddevelopmentin
sportsmanship,fairplay,teamworkandcompetition.”1. Bycreatingapsychologicallyhealthysituation,allchildrencanbewinnersregardlessofwin/loss
record.
2. Winningwilltakecareofitselfwithinthelimitsoftheplayer’stalentsifthecoachhelpsthemdeveloptheirathleticabilities.
3. Whilehappyplayersdon’talwayswin,theyneedneverlose.
4. Validgoalsforparticipantsincludetheenjoymentofrelatingtoacoachandteammates,increasing
self-esteem,improvingskills,andlookingforwardtofurthersportsparticipation.
5. Treatingofficialswithrespectandtoleranceformistakeswillassistplayersinactinginadignifiedmanner.
6. Apositiveapproachtocoachingischaracterizedbyliberaluseofrewardandencouragement.
7. Coachesandparentsneedtohaverealisticexpectationsandconsistentlyrewardplayerswhenthey

1. Thecommissionersforeachdivisionsetuprosters,gameschedules,andpracticenights/times.ThesewillbedistributedattheCoachesMeetinginFebruary/March.
2. CoachesshallemaileachplayerontheirrosteroftheOpeningDayandpracticeschedules,andprovideinformationrelatedtotheTeamWALLastheprimarymeansofcommunication.
3. CommissionerandcoachesshallensurethatallplayersknowhowtoaccessthefollowingthroughtheTeamWALLontheirWRAaccounts:

2. WHS-TheJuniorandIntermediatedivisionteamswiththe2:00p.m.gamesareresponsibleforplacingthepenaltycirclemarkersonthefieldsusingtheappropriatesuppliesthataremaintainedineachtub.LaterintheseasonthemarkersmayalreadybeinplacefromtheInstructionaldivision.
3. GA–SeniorDivisionparentsneedtomovethegoalsontothefieldandpositionthemaswellasthegoalieboxespriortothe12noongames.FieldsmustbereturnedtoGAlacrosseset-upbeforeleaving.

1. Games–Ifschoolofficialsclosefields,oriffieldhockeycommitteemembersdecidethatinclementweatherisnotconducivetoplaying,registrantswillbenotifiedviaemailthatgamesarecanceled.EveryattemptwillbemadetopostgamecancellationnotificationsonthefieldhockeytaboftheWRAwebsite.
2. Practices–Coacheswillusetheirownjudgmentindecidingwhetherornottoholdpracticebasedonweatherconcerns.Aco-chairwillnotifycoachesifschoolofficialsclosefields.Coachesareresponsiblefornotifyingtheirplayersofpracticecancellation.

2.0 PROGRAMINFORMATION
! TheFieldHockeyProgram
1. TheWRAFieldHockeyChairperson(s)andmembersoftheWhitpainRecreationAssociationBoardshallgoverntheFieldHockeyprogram.ItshallbethedutyoftheChairpersontodirectandtosuperviseallactivitiesoftheprogram.
2. AllcoachesareremindedthatthedevelopmentofchildrenintoresponsiblemenandwomenistheprimarymotivationoftheWhitpainRecreationAssociation;winningissecondary.
3. Anygrossmisconduct,unfairplay,orbehaviorindirectconflictwiththephilosophypresentedinthismanual,orconsistentnoncompliancewiththeWRAFieldHockeyCommitteerulesandproceduresassetforthinthiscoachingmanualwillsubjectthecoachand/orassistantcoachtoreviewbytheFieldHockeyChairpersonandtheWRAVicePresidentofOperationsforpossibledismissalornon-approval.
! Teams1. Thenumberofregistrantsshalldeterminenumberofplayersperteam.Theideal
maximumnumberofplayersperteamis12forInstructional,12forJunior,12forIntermediate,and19forSenior.
2. NumberofTeams.TheavailablecoachingstaffandfieldswilldeterminethenumberofteamsineachDivision.Thereshallbeanevennumberofteamsineachdivision,unlesstherearecircumstancesthatrequireanoddnumber.

4. Childrenmustplayintheirappropriateagegroups.Playerswillnotbeallowedtoplayupadivisionunlessthereisacircumstancedeemedappropriatebythecommissionerandchairperson(s).Childrenmaynotplaydownunlessthereisacircumstancedeemedappropriate.
5. TeamFormation.WRAFieldHockeydoesnottakerequestsregardingcoaching,car-pooling,orfriendswiththeexceptionoftheInstructionaldivision.Teamsareformedasbestaspossibletoaccommodateonepracticenightconflict.Coachesmaynotswitchplayersfromoneteamtoanother.Junior,Intermediate,andSeniordivisioncommissionersarenotobligatedtohonorrequestsforfriends,car-pooling,coaches,etc.

backgroundcheckrequirements.HighSchoolstudentswhotakeontheroleascoachesmusthavearegisteredparent/adulttoactasanassistantcoachandattendallpractices/games.Minor/studentcoachesmustsignandsubmitaParentorGuardianAttestationformaswellasaVolunteerAffirmationAgreementform.BothformsareavailableontheWRAwebsite.
3. Coachesshallberesponsiblefortheactionsoftheirteamsonthefield.
! LeagueStandings1. TheSeniordivisioncoacheswillinputgameresultseachweekandtheonline
softwarewillkeeptrackofteamstandingsthroughouttheseasonusingastandardwin/loss/tiepointsystem.Theseasonspointtotalswillbeusedtodeterminepoolpositionsintheyear-endWRATournament.
2. TherewillbenoleaguerecordskeptfortheregularseasonfortheIntermediate,Junior,andInstructionalDivisions.Intermediate,Junior,andInstructionalDivisionteamswillcompeteinanend-of-yeartournament.

3. TherefereewillreportanycautionsorbehaviorcontrarytothegoalsoftheWRAtotheFieldHockeyChairpersonorOfficialsCoordinator.
4. Coachesmaynotwalkontothefieldtoprotestanyplaysorcallsbythereferee.5. IntheSeniorDivision,areferee’srulingmaybediscussedwithonlythehead
coach,andonlyathalftimeorattheendofthegame.6. WRAwillendeavortoutilizePIAAcertifiedrefereesforallSeniorgames.

3. Ourrefereedevelopmentprogramiscomposedofhighschoolstudentsintraining;theserefereesworkgamesintheInstructional,Junior,andIntermediatedivisionsonly.
! OnTheFieldCoachingReminders
1. Becausecoachesareworkingwithchildrenataformativeage,thispositionrequiresunderstandingandpatience;youarethemostimportantadultinourfieldhockeyprogram.
2. Coachesarenevertoenterthefieldofplayorapproachtherefereetocontestaruling.Coachesmayonlycoachtheirplayersaboutpositionandballplayduringthegame.
3. Onfieldcoachingduringthefirstscrimmageandfirstgameonlywillbeallowed,Instructionaldivisionexcepted.Therewillbecircumstanceswhenacoachisonthefieldduringgameplayafterthesescenarios.Ifthisoccurs,thecoachwhowillbeonthefieldistonotifytheothercoachbeforethegame.
4. He/shemustbealeaderwhoshouldinspirerespectandwhoshoulddevelopadesiretoexcelandadeterminationtogivea100percenteffort.
5. Thecoachisafriendwhoshouldencourageyoungplayerstoenjoycompetitionandtodotheirbestregardlessofthefinalscore.
6. Itisespeciallyimportantthatacoachpraisestheeffortsofthemembersofthelosingteam.

4.0 RULESOFPLAY(WRA)Thefollowingaregeneralrulesofplaythatneedtobeadheredtoforalldivisionsasneeded.Thedivisioncommissionersand/orWRAFieldHockeyCo-Chairsshouldbecontactedifthegeneralrulesofplayarenotunderstoodoriffurtherclarificationisneeded.ItshouldbenotedthatWRAaddedtheself-passruleasofSpring2011.Atthattime,theself-passwasbasicallyanewfreehitrule.Thechangeallowedateamtousetheself-pass,apushpass,oradriveasameansofputtingaballintoplayoncenterpasses,16-yardhits,side-ins,freehits,andlonghits.Thedefensemuststillremain5yardsfromtheball.Asyoureadthroughthegeneralrulesofplay,therewillbenotationsincludedwheretheself-passcanbeused.

ThefollowinginstructionsareforthefieldsetupatWHSInstructional,Junior,andIntermediateGames.Fieldsare35yardswide(Field1issmaller).Allare60yardslong.Field1islocatedclosesttothescoreboard.Thereare5yardsbetweeneachfield.HereisadescriptionofthetasksthatneedtobeaccomplishedaspartofthefieldsetupatWHS:
1. Goalplacement–Thecenterofthegoalisplacedinthecenterofeachfield(about15yardsfromsidelineforField1andabout17yardsforFields2and3).CompletedbytheInstructionalcoaches/parents.
2. Cornermarkers–startingattheendoftheField1,placeacornermarkeratthecornerofeachfield.Count30yards,usethewhitefootballlines–theyareevery5yardsandputdownamarker.Thencount5yards,placeamarker,then35yards,placeamarker,then5yards,placeamarkerandfinally35moreyardsandplaceamarker.Ifdonecorrectly,youshouldendonthelastfulllinealongthefield5yardsinfrontofthefootballgoalpostsonthefarendofField3.
3. PenaltyCircles–inthefieldset-uptotearesixwhitebagscontainingredmarkersaswellasa15ydpieceofrope.Theseareusedtomakethecircles.Youwillneed4ofthesmallermarkersforeachpenaltycircleyoucreate.Thisisatleasta2-personjob.Followthesedirections:
a. Onepersonstandsatthepostwiththeropeinhand.Stretchtheropealongthatgoalline.b. Findtheblue/blackpenmarksalongtheropeandplaceasmallmarkerateachspot.There
willbe2oneachsideofthegoal.Thefirstshouldbe5ydsfromthegoalpost,thesecond10ydsfromthegoalpost.
c. Keepingtheropetightandwalking,placeamarkereveryfewyardsuntilyouarestraightoutfromthegoalpost.Havethepersononthepostnowmovetotheotherpostandcontinuetocirclebacktotheoppositesideofthegoalfromwhereyoustarted.
