Fiction

• Tells a story about made up characters and events

• Contains a group of story events called a plot

• Contains a setting, which is where and when the story takes place

• Has a narrator who tells the story

• Contains a message or lesson about life, known as the theme

• May be written in first person point of view, which means that the narrator is part of the story (I, me)

• May be written in third person, meaning the narrator is NOT part of the story (he, she, they)

Why is fiction written?

• The purpose of fiction is to entertain the reader.

3 Major Types of Fiction

• Novel - is long, with many chapters

• Novella - shorter than a novel, but longer than a short story

• Short story – brief enough to be read in one setting

Novel

• Has a plot with many events• Has several characters who face

challenges• Often has more than one setting• Often has more than one theme

Novella

• Plot has fewer events than the plot of a novel

• Several characters that face challenges

• May have more than one setting• Sometimes has more than one
