    Introduction

Polypropylene fibers is the synthetic fibers, which was used for concrete reinforcement

Fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) isconcrete containing fibrous material whichincreases its structural integrity

    Application

Fibrillated Polypropylene Fiber (FPF) is widelyused in general concrete applications where atough, ductile, and corrosion-resistant concrete is

    required.

FPF main objective is to controltemperature/shrinkage cracking while improving

    basic durability properties.

    Application (contd)

FPF is applied but not limited to slabs-on-grade,overlays/toppings, curbs, slope paving, driveways, sidewalks, basement floors, garage

floors, architectural/colored concrete, precast, mortar, grout, water tanks, and sewagetreatment facilities.

    Benefits

Applying FPF additive to concrete mix gives:

    Higher Tensile and Compressive Strength

Lower Shrinkage Effect and Higher Ductility

    Higher Toughness and Flexural Strength

Saving of concrete itself due to a constantthickness

Higher Elasticity to bending traction Higher Elasticity of the concrete

A reduction in the risks of corrosion

A reduction in micro cracks 5

Benefits (contd)Higher Tensile And Compressive Strength

Fiber Reinforced Concrete is proven to increase both tensileand compressive strength as their cylinders continue tosustain load and endure large deformations without shatteringinto pieces. [ACI 544.1R-96]

Benefits (contd)Higher Toughness and Flexural Strength

The material properties of fiberreinforced concrete are somewhatvariable based on fiberconcentration and the form of the

fiber reinforcement with increasesof more than 100% having beenreported.

    The increases in flexural strength

is particularly sensitive, not onlyto the fiber volume, but also to theaspect ratio of the fibers, withhigher aspect ratio which led to itsstrength increases.

    Benefits (contd)

Lower Shrinkage Effect and Higher DuctilityFiber reinforced concrete areintended to be used toenhance the splitting tensile,

first crack strength andflexural toughness, themultidirectional positioning offibers in concrete mixturesassists in relieving the stress

that is developed duringshrinkage which results inreduction of plastic anddrying shrinkage cracking.

    Disadvantages

    Fabrication

    The process of incorporating

fiber into the cement matrix is

    labor intensive and costlier than

    the production of the plain

concreteFigure 6. Mixing Collated FPF with concrete

    Substitute

    Wire meshReinforcement

    Sensitive to environment

    Steel corrodes

    Cracks easily

    Concrete spalling from the

    surface

Collated Fibrillated Polypropylene Fiber (CFPF) is anexcellent substitute for wire mesh reinforcement in

    concrete reinforcement

CFPF Typical Dosage and Unit Cost

The typical dosage for CFPF is 1.5 pounds percubic yard or 0.9 kilograms per cubic meter to bemixed with concrete

The typical unit cost for CFPF additive in NorthernCalifornia region is approximately $2.00 per poundwith freight included

Applying CFPF additive to the concrete mixturehas negligible effect on the cost impact ofstructural concrete
