138 Fibre Chemistry, Vol. 35, No. 2, 2003 FIBRES AND FABRICS WITH LASTING SCENT. IMMOBILIZATION OF FRAGRANT ALCOHOLS ON THE SURFACE OF FIBRES B. A. Izmailov, V. M. Gorchakova, UDC 67.026.04 V. A. Batalenkova, V. T. Syubaeva, and N. E. Bochkarev A method for fabrication of fibres and nonwovens with lasting scent and an effective method of autoadhesive bonding of fibres in nonwovens with a small amount, 0.25-0.30 wt. %, of polydimethylvinyl(alkoxy)silazanes that eliminates use of 30-40 wt. % traditional binders are developed. New organosilicon modifiers of fibres and fabrics are synthesized polydimethylvinyl(alkoxy)siloxazanes containing a fixed amount of isobutoxy, β-phenylethoxy, γ-phenylpropenyloxy, and cyclogeraniolyloxysilyl groups capable of giving the materials a lasting scent that persists after laundering. Organosilicon products are of great interest as fibre an fabric modifiers which can give them hydrophobic and simultaneously the required biocidal, therapeutic, and chemisorption properties [1-3]. We investigated the development of a method of manufacturing fibres and fabrics with lasting scent and also the effect of treating the surface of the fibres in the stage of oiling with polyorgano(alkoxy)silazanes on the physicomechanical properties of nonwoven materials in autoadhesive bonding (without using the usual binders). Solving these problems required creating new organosilicon fibre modifiers. We developed a method for synthesis of modifiers polyorgano(alkoxy)silazanes: polydimethylvinylsilazane (I) and polydimethylvinyl(alkoxy)silazanes (II-VIII), containing a fixed number of isobutoxy, β-phenylethoxy, γ-phenylpropenyloxy, and cyclogeraniolyloxysilyl groups. Product I was made with the method in [4] by co-ammonolysis of 3 moles of vinyltrichlorosilane with 1 mole of dimethyldichlorosilane in toluene medium at room temperature (Scheme I), and products II-VIII were made with the method in [5] by alcoholysis of product I in toluene medium at 80°C with 1 mole and 3 moles of a fragrant alcohol (isobutyl, β-phenylethyl with the scent of roses, cinnamic, with the scent of hyacinth, and cyclogeraniol with the scent of lily of the valley) (Scheme II). Product I is a resinous substance which easily passes into a nonmelting and insoluble state when heated, while products II-VIII are highly viscous liquids or resinous substances which harden very slowly when heated, forming nonmelting and insoluble products with lasting scent. Products I-VIII are readily soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, ether, acetone, and are insoluble in water. Moscow State Textile University.
