    REPLACING THE PAD

    Make sure there is no paperin the stacker.

    Press the ADF Cover OpenButton.

    Note:The cover opens slowly on itsown.

    Multiple feeds and misfeeds can be caused by a worn or improperlyinstalled Pad. The life span of the Pad Assembly is approximately600,000 pages. If NCR or carbonless paper is used the life span of thePad may be decreased by half.

    REPLACING THE PAD (CONT.)

    To install the new Pad, align the pins on the back of the Pad with thelarge side of the mounting holes and move the Pad to the right.

    Open the Roller Cover byplacing your fingers in eitherof the openings of the coverand pulling out.

    Pull out on the tab that locksthe Pick Roller in place in thedirection of the arrow andslide the Pick Roller off theshaft.

    Repeat the procedure aboveto remove the second PickRoller.

    REPLACING THE PICK ROLLERS

    Worn, defective, or improperly installed Pick Rollers will cause misfeedsand paper jams. The Pick Rollers have an approximate life of 600,000pages. If NCR or carbonless paper is used the life span of the PickRollers may be decreased by half.

    REPLACING THE PICK ROLLERS (CONT.)

    Install the new Pick Rollersby aligning the hole in therollers with the roller shaft.

    Note:The roller shaft and the hole inthe Pick Rollers are keyed andwill only slide on in oneorientation.

    Close the Roller Cover.

    Close the ADF Cover.

    Reset the Pick RollerCounter in the SoftwareOperation Panel.

    REPLACING THE SEPARATION ROLLERS (CONT.)

    Remove the two SeparationRollers by sliding theminwards and off the shafts (inthe direction of the arrow).

    Close the Roller Cover.

    Note:The Separation Rollers willautomatically spring to theirproper position.

    Close the ADF Cover.

    Reset the Separator RollerCounter in the SoftwareOperation Panel.

    Install the Separation Rollers by sliding them on to each shaft, aligningthe groove on the roller with the screw on the shaft.

    REPLACING THE BRAKE ROLLER

    A worn or improperly installed Brake Roller will cause multiple feeds andpaper jams. The Brake Roller has an approximate life of 600,000 pages.If NCR or carbonless paper is used the life span of the Brake Roller maybe decreased by half.

    Make sure there is no paperin the stacker.

    Press the ADF Cover OpenButton.

    Note:The cover opens slowly on itsown.

    Open the Pad Cover bygrabbing both sides of thecover, pressing in and thenpulling out as shown in thedrawing to the right.

    Remove the Brake Roller bylifting up on the left side firstand then removing the rightside of the shaft from itsmounting hole.

    Install the new Brake Rollerby inserting the right end ofthe shaft into the mountinghole, then place the left endinto the mounting bracket.

    Close the Pad Cover.

    Close the ADF Cover.

    Reset the Brake RollerCounter in the SoftwareOperation Panel.

    CHECKING AND RESETTING THE CONSUMABLE COUNTERS

    The following instructions show you how to check the life count of eachconsumable and also how to reset the counter after the consumableshave been replaced. To insure accurate consumable life tracking, itis very important to reset the consumable counters every timeconsumables are replaced.

    CHECKING CONSUMABLE COUNTS

    Turn on the scanner and confirm it is communicating properly to yourPC.

    From the START MENU, select ALL PROGRAMS/SCANNER UTILITY FORMICROSOFT WINDOWS/SOFTWARE OPERATION PANEL.

    The SOFTWARE OPERATION PANEL opens.

    CHECKING AND RESETTING THE CONSUMABLE COUNTERS (CONT.)

    Select the DEVICE SETTINGS Tab.

    Counter Description

    Total Page Count(ADF) Pages scanned by the fi-5900C Scanner.

    Pad Number of pages scanned since the Padwas replaced.

    Brake Roller Number of pages scanned since the BrakeRoller was replaced.

    Pick Roller Number of pages scanned since the PickRollers were replaced.

    Separator Roller Number of pages scanned since theSeparation Rollers were replaced.

    The screen above displays the Life Count of the Scanner and the numberof pages scanned by each consumable.

    Note:For the consumable counters to be accurate, they must be reset whenthe consumables are replaced.

    RESETTING THE CONSUMABLE COUNTERS

    Once consumables are replaced, it is very important to reset theConsumable Counters. This will allow the user to accurately track thepage count of each consumable.

    Click the CLEAR BUTTON beside the replaced consumable.

    At the confirmation screen below, click on the OK BUTTON. Theconsumable count will be reset to 0.

    CLEANING LOCATIONS AND FREQUENCIES

    Note:The scanner will need to be cleaned more frequently than statedabove if the following paper is scanned.

    Paper with special coating such as carbonless paper (NCR). Paper with large amount of printing. (Heavy toner or ink) Paper filled in with Pencil. Documents containing a large amount of calcium carbonate. Documents with toner that is not fused properly.

    CLEANING THE ROLLERS WITH THE CLEANING SHEETS

    The cleaning sheets are designed to remove only loose paper dust and inkfrom the rollers. Use them approximately every 10,000 sheets scanned.They are to be used in between the thorough cleanings of the scanner.Using the cleaning sheets does not take the place of the more com-plete cleanings described later in this section

    n Open the Pre-Imprinter Cover

    o While pressing the Scanner

    SCAN BUTTON Scan

    , press the

    POWER BUTTON to turn the

    scanner on.

    Note:The scanner Function NumberDisplay will display the itemsto the right.

    p Stop pressing the SCAN BUTTON.

    q Close the Pre-Imprinter Cover.

    Set the Hopper Guides to theB4 width.

    Pull out the StackerExtension and adjust it to thelength of the cleaning sheet.

    Turn off the scanner.

    Access the Offline Feed Test by following the steps below.

    Remove the protective paperfrom the cleaning sheet.

    Place the cleaning sheet on theHopper against the Left HopperGuide, adhesive side up toclean the Upper TransportPath.

    Press the Scanner SCAN BUTTONScan

    3 times.

    The Function Number Displaywill change as shown to the leftand the cleaning sheet is fedthrough the scanner.

    Place the same cleaning sheeton the Hopper against theRight Hopper Guide, adhesiveside up.

    Press the Scanner SCAN

    BUTTON Scan

    3 times again.

    The cleaning sheet is fedthrough the scanner.

    Repeat the previous steps withthe adhesive side face down toclean the lower Transport Path.

    CLEANING THE CONSUMABLE FEED COMPONENTS

    It is very important to clean the scanner consumables on a regular basisto avoid mis-picking, double feeding and paper jam problems. Theseitems should be cleaned every 10,000 sheets. More frequent cleaningwill be required if scanning paper with a large amount of printing,documents filled out in pencil, or carbonless multipart forms.

    Open the ADF Cover.

    Wipe the rubber parts of thePad with a lint free clothmoistened with F1 Cleaner orisopropyl alcohol in thedirection of the arrows.

    Open the Roller Cover.

    Clean the Pick Rollers andthe Separation Rollers with alint free cloth moistened withF1 Cleaner or isopropylalcohol .

    Close the Roller Cover afterthe cleaning is completed.

    CLEANING THE CONSUMABLE FEED COMPONENTS (CONT.)

    Open the Pad Cover.

    Remove the Brake Roller bylifting up on the left side firstand then removing the rightside of the shaft from itsmounting hole.

    Clean the rubber surface ofthe Brake Roller using a lintfree cloth moistened with F1Cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.

    Reinstall the Brake Rollerafter cleaning.

    Close the Pad Cover.

    Notes:Do not use F2 Cleaner on the Pad, Pick Rollers, Separation Rollers, andBrake Roller.

    CLEANING THE PINCH AND FEED ROLLERS

    It is very important to clean the scanner pinch and feed rollers on aregular basis to avoid paper feeding problems. These rollers should becleaned every 10,000 sheets. More frequent cleaning will be requiredif scanning paper with a large amount of printing, documents filledout in pencil, or carbonless multipart forms.

    Pinch RollersRoller TypesThe fi-5900C and fi-5950Scanners have nine sets ofPinch and Feed Rollers withtwo rollers on each shaft. ThePinch Rollers are the upper setof rollers (grey rollers indrawing to the right). The FeedRollers are the lower set ofrollers (black rollers in thedrawing to the right).

    NOTE! The fi-5900C Scanner can have either Rubber or Metal Feed Rollers

    installed. It is very important to know what rollers are installed becausethe fluids used to clean the different type of rollers is different.

    All fi-5950 Scanners have Rubber Feed Rollers installed.

    Identifying Rubber Rollers Any fi-5900C Scanner, Serial Number 100001 and above has Rubber

    Rollers installed. Any scanner that was upgraded to Rubber Rollers will have a

    Rubber Roller Label installed on the front of the scanner.

    The table below lists the cleaners for each roller type.

    Clean the Pinch Rollers onthe upper side of thetransport path with a lint freecloth moistened with F1Cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.

    If you have a scanner withMetal Feed Rollers, cleanthe rollers on the lower sideof the transport path with alint free cloth moistened withF2 Cleaner.

    If you have a scanner withRubber Feed Rollers, cleanthe rollers on the lower sideof the transport path with alint free cloth moistened withF1 Cleaner or isopropylalcohol.

    Allow the rollers to dry.

    Close the ADF Cover.

    CLEANING THE TRANSPORT PATH AND SENSORS

    Open the ADF Cover.

    Clean the whole transportpath (stainless steel andglass) using a lint free clothmoistened with F1 Cleaner orisopropyl alcohol.

    If the transport path containsa large amount of paper dust,use a vacuum cleaner toclean.

    Clean the Skew DetectionSensors on the lowertransport path using a lintfree cloth moistened with F1Cleaner or isopropyl alcohol.

    Keeping the transport path clean will avoid paper feeding issues and themarking of scanned paper. Clean sensors will also cut down on paperjamming and false error messages.
