若きジャズサックス奏者の寺久保エレナさんは、2011 年に高校を卒業した後、アメリカのボストンにあるバークリー音楽大学に留学します。高校生のころから、国内外の大物アーティストたちとのセッションを経験してきた彼女に、音楽と英語について話してもらいました。

Terakubo Erena was born in Sapporo in 1992. She started playing the

saxophone when she was nine. One year later, she joined a jazz orchestra

in her hometown. As a junior high school student, she got an opportunity

to attend a summer program at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The

program was for talented young musicians from all over the world. After

graduating from senior high school in 2011, she entered Berklee to study jazz.

I : Did you enjoy your high school life?

E : Yes, I did. I had a lot of fun. I enjoyed chatting with my classmates.

I studied English very hard because I dreamed of studying jazz in

America, which is the home of jazz.

I : What did you learn through playing with musicians in America?

E : I learned that playing music and talking in English have a lot in

common. For example, in both cases, we express our emotions through

rhythm and intonation. Therefore, I want to become more fluent in

English.

I : How has music changed you?

E : I have recognized the importance of my own identity as a Japanese

musician. I admire the great American jazz players, who have

built their identities in their home country. However, as a Japanese

musician, I want to develop my own original music.

I : What do you mean by your own original music?

E : I’d like to establish a new style of performing jazz that other musicians

haven’t thought of. I’m going to pursue this goal as I perform with

various musicians around the world.

　寺久保エレナさんは、１９９２年に札幌で生まれました。彼女は９歳のときにサックスを吹き始めました。１年後、彼女は自分の住んでいる町のジャズオーケストラに加わりました。中学生のとき、彼女はボストンにあるバークリー音楽大学のサマープログラムに参加する機会を得ました。そのプログラムは世界中の才能ある若いミュージシャンのためのものでした。２０１１年に高校を卒業した後、彼女はジャズを勉強するためにバークリーに入学しました。

：高校生活は楽しかったですか。E：はい、楽しかったです。たくさん楽しいことがありました。クラスメートとのおしゃべりは楽しかったです。アメリカでジャズを勉強することを夢見ていたので、とても一生懸命に英語を勉強しました。アメリカはジャズの本場なのです。
