THE GREATEST GENERATIONby Jack B. Shumate III

Nineteen-year-old Stan Wilson, a recent high school graduate in North Dakota, was playing cribbage

for a dime a game with some buddies on their Great Northern Railroad job site near the Canadian border when news came over the radio that the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. A week later, Stan was at the re-cruiting center in Fargo being sworn in to the U.S. Marine Corps.

Stan served in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters of war, with a brief stopover in San Diego to marry his high school sweet-heart, Gail, on March 2, 1943. He was serv-ing on an antiaircraft battleship during the Norman-dy invasion; they ran that ship right up on the sand so that even if it was struck by the Germans, it wouldn’t

Target practice: feel free to take aim at the CW editor whenever we play —but be careful, or your name might end up in the center column!

My monthly bat-ting average

All cribbage players live in fear of it. We

love it when it happens to our opponents,

but we can’t stand it when it happens to

us. What is it? To coin a term: nonadeka-

phobia—the dreaded 19-hand! Being un-

able to pick up your back peg and record

a score—because you have no score, zero

points—is one of the worst feelings a play-

er can have.

As hard as it may be to believe, the

number 19 can, however, sometimes be a

good thing for cribbage players. It is not

always bad. Here are a few of the good 19s

found in cribbagedom:

• 19 players at Grass Roots club

• 19 GRPs earned at Grass Roots club

(with or without a grand slam)

• 19 game points on your consolation

scorecard (ditto)

• 19 points scored while pegging against

Duane Toll (a trip, a quad, and a go, if

you’re wondering)

• 19 years as the age of the youngest player

at a tournament

• 19 points scored before lunchtime in a

weekend tournament

• 19 points scored after lunch in a week-

end tournament

• 19 games won in a 22-game tourney

• 19 points total in the negative column

of your scorecard

• 19 players in the playoffs (meaning that

tourney attendance topped 65 players,

allowing another round of MRPs to be

awarded to the qualifiers)

Rather than focusing on the negative,

how about embracing the nineteen-ness

in you, in all of us, and looking for the

good 19s out there. Embrace your inner

nineteen! CW

ACC membership odometer

6 3 6 4as of May 1

FrustrationI have become increasingly frustrated as I read each new volume of Cribbage World. Although I have been playing cribbage for over thirty-five years, I only recently dis-covered the ACC, having joined last year (2015). Upon receiving my first Cribbage World , I soon realized that whoever is writing the various articles and informa-tion simply assumes that all ACC members know the terminology and abbreviations! For instance, in the May issue, in the Tour-ney Tidbits section, the person writing the article states: “We all know what a grand slam is.” I know what it means for many sports, but not cribbage. What are GRPs? What are MRPs? In the Grass Roots Clubs section (pg. 24), there were numbers in the first two columns and I have no idea what they meant! Please don’t assume that all of us are longtime members who know what everything means.

Scott Lee (Glenside PA)

Editor’s Note: Entering any new society or club or group can be intimidating. Cribbage World has two main duties: education of players and dissemination of info. It cannot, of course, print all the info that every newbie needs to know in every issue—both for lack of space and for fear of boring established players. Here are some specific answers to your questions: a grand slam is winning all games in a tournament (usually nine); detailed explanations of MRPs and GRPs were printed in the July and August 2007 CWs (and admittedly needs to be reprint-ed); the numbers on page 24 refer to rank,

GRPs, and club number (the table header was accidentally omitted from the May is-sue). CW will continue to try to find the right mixture of education and dissemination. In the meantime, the easiest way to find out something is to ask other players at tour-naments, club members, or BOD members.

Tourney Tidbits 7 + 7 Two players—Life Master () Jeanne Jelke (Redding CA) and Melvin Chase (Rickreall OR)—had grand slams (seven games) in the Newport In-Betweener conso-lation, but only one of them could be called high qualifier. In this case, it was Jeanne.

28 + 28 On April 1—and this is no joke—Life Master (7) DeLynn Colvert (Mis-soula MT) held back-to-back 28s in a game against Life Master (2) Willie Evans (Kennewick WA). For those of you keeping score at home, the odds of this happening are 225,840,784 to 1 (approximately).

23 & 2 Life Master () David Campbell (Parsons-field ME) hit a hot streak of cards at the Ore-gon Coast Classic. He won his last six games in the main (but did not qualify), followed this up with a grand slam in the consolation (starting, no less, with a skunk—see page 4 of the May Cribbage World), and then lost only two playoff games (one each to Life Master (7) Duane Toll and very-soon-to-be Master Tammy Gibbons) in his march to the consolation championship. In all, Dave lost only two games in a twenty-five-game stretch, for a 92% winning average!

24 + 24 John “Rooster” Cogburn (Crescent City CA) scored a 24-hand and 24-crib in game ten against Dick Merck (Portland OR) in the Lincoln City main.

92 + 97 + 93 + 64 Who were those kids playing doubles on Friday night in Lincoln City OR. Miriam “Mim” Larson (Bremerton WA), age 92, teamed up with Hazel Weichseldorfer (Dupont WA), age 97, against Stan Wilson (Lincoln City OR), age 93, and a youngster: Stan’s 64-year-old nephew Michael Ward (Stan-wood WA). In what might possibly be the oldest doubles game in history (combined age = 346), Stan and Michael won by eight points.

I Correction I It was Nick Vow-

ell (Baker City OR)—not his dad, Willis Vowell—who

teamed up with Herb Petty (Bak-er City OR) to win the doubles at the Gene Sissel Memorial in March. Nick and Herb turned in an im-pressive grand slam in doubles,

while Willis got two 28-hands in one game in another

satellite event.

sink and they could keep banging away to provide cover for the landing troops.

When the war was over, Stan returned to civilian life in North Dakota. For the next fifty years, occupied by his career with the Burroughs office machine com-pany, raising three children, and enjoy-ing five grandchildren, Stan put cribbage aside, and he didn’t play again until he and his wife moved to Canby OR in the 1990s, where his wife’s older sister lived. One day, in the American Legion hall, he found a group playing cribbage upstairs. They talked him into joining the ACC, and Stan learned to play the game all over again, joining the local Grass Roots club and playing tournaments in Oregon and Washington. (Remarkably, Stan doesn’t remember when or how he first learned to play; apparently, cribbage came with

the body.)After moving to Oregon, Stan built

a large house for his family in Cannon Beach. Over the years he has also enjoyed doing intarsia woodwork, creating both decorative pieces and cribbage boards. His two granddaughters have given him five great-grandchildren, some of them already in their twenties and, Stan marvels, “big-ger than I am.” His three grandsons all live in England (one is a London firefighter), and they all play cribbage.

Now residing in Lincoln City OR, Stan is a member of ACC Grass Roots Club 420, where he earned his Bronze Award this season and got his second 28-hand of the season on May 2. One of the very few meetings he has missed was on the evening that he and Gail celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. CW

Cover Story—continued from page 1

SEVENTY YEARS IN THE MAKINGOn April 2, Master William Jones (Herm-iston OR), a Silver Award–winning member of Oregon’s First Club #2, was awarded five military medals. Not for his service in Iraq or another recent conflict, but for service during World War Two. William was stationed in Europe as an ordnance worker, and when he returned to civilian life after the end of hostilities, all thoughts of medals drifted away. The 92-year-old vet-eran received the medals—seventy years overdue!—in a ceremony in Hermiston: Presidential Citation, Good Conduct Med-al, two campaign medals, and the World War II Victory Medal. For the full story, go to eastoregonian.com and type “Hermiston WWII Veteran” in the search box.

The President’s Columnb y J e a n n e H o f b a u e r

I’m sure you have all heard of “random acts of kindness.” Well if you subscribe to this way of thinking (and I hope you do), we all have a great opportunity to apply it to our fellow ACC members.

Humans going through the normal

aging process start losing their sensory skills, and those of us who have been hit by health issues may notice such losses even more keenly and rapidly. None of us can hear and see at 50 or 60 or 70 like we could in our 20s. Other consequences of aging or illness such as loss of strength, endurance, and memory can affect our performance.

Acting kindly means you have a sym-pathetic attitude toward others and a will-ingness to show considerate behavior. So, how can you execute this idea as it would apply to us in cribbage? I really don’t think that I need to tell you, but I will give some suggestions anyway.

There are so very many ways to of-fer kindness to those around us. Simple things like just stopping to talk with some-one sitting by themselves, or offering to get someone coffee or water, or helping someone with their shuffling. How about

not showing impatience or intolerance? I know lots of people who could not attend cribbage if they did not have someone to take them, and wouldn’t that really be a loss for all of us? And we do not want play-ers to stop coming because they are made to feel they are not playing fast enough or good enough.

We all love to see acts of kindness. Who has not seen or heard of traffic stopping for a mother duck and her babies crossing a road? Committing an act of kindness makes a person feel good.

Let’s all give it a try.

“No act of kindness, however small, is wasted.” —Aesop

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” —Plato

“Kindness should become the natural way of life, not the exception.” —Buddha

Ruling Points . . .We have never seen rule 4.4.a(3) enforced, and many peo-ple are possibly not even aware of it. It is the second worst penalty in the rulebook: “If either player is dealt the wrong number of cards other than as specified in rule 4.4.a.(2), there shall be a redeal by the same dealer. The player with the wrong amount must allow the opponent to confirm the amount. If the player does not, such as placing the cards face down on the pack, etc., the offender is assessed a back-ward penalty equal to ten points or enough to put both pegs ‘off the board,’ whichever is less. If the applicable backward penalty is less than ten points, the opponent is awarded points equal to the difference.”

This rule reminds us that the pone is as responsible for keeping track of the cards as the dealer, taking the time to count the cards, separating them, and so on. A lot of older players are regular tournament and Grass Roots competitors, and we know that handling cards gets more difficult as age creeps upon us. Hopefully most folks can still manage to handle six cards and count them when dealt. With money involved, the motivation is still there to both keep extra cards, or throw a bad hand to the deck, the player claiming they had more than six cards.

Ruling Points is written by Patrick & Michael Barrett (Wisconsin Rapids WI). The brothers have been ACC judges since the early 1990s, and Patrick has been a senior judge since 2002. If you have a question about the rule-

book or a judge call, send it to them at [email protected].

ACCAwardsA self-taught player, Haley joined the ACC in 2006. A member (and now director) of Club 3 in the northwest Chicago suburbs, she has earned her Bronze Award and has been club champion four times.

In a memorable seven-month span from June 2015 to January 2016, Haley won six tourneys! Her favorite tournament is any 22-game-main tourney that isn’t cut-for-

deal. When asked who her toughest opponent was, Haley listed about a dozen players, but finally fessed up: “Emilio Perez is the toughest player in Illinois.” Noncribbage interests include rock collecting (particularly Lake Superior agates), fishing, golfing, go-ing to rummage sales and flea markets, and playing poker. Haley is a well-known poker

and gambling writer and editor in her day job, and she was one of the people who helped ex-pose the cheats and thieves behind the Absolute Poker and UltimateBet online-poker scandals last decade.

Cribbage Board of the MonthBY JAY FULWIDER

Jay Fulwider collects cribbage boards from his home in picturesque Washington State, where he also enjoys golf, fishing, and racquetball. His philosophy on the key to life: “Just keep your pegs moving.” Ideas for and questions about this column may be sent to him at [email protected] (put “Cribbage Board” in the subject line).

My wife, Lois, and I travel to Palm Springs CA every March. Over

the years I have checked the ACC website to see if there is a Grass Roots club in the area. I understand that many folks visiting the Coachel-la Valley are there only for the winter months and return to the northern United States and Canada for the summer. That makes it difficult to maintain a regular Grass Roots club.

This year I again looked and, to my surprise, a club was listed in La Quinta CA. I contacted Dave Sum-mer, director of the Brown Bag Crib-bage Club, and asked about visiting and bringing a friend.

Barry Heath (Sas-katoon SK) and I joined the group of nineteen cribbage players and had a great time. The Brown Bag Cribbage Club plays around noon, thus the name. It is not your standard club, but has several ACC members. They play for only an hour and a half, and they mostly play doubles. Part-ners rotate after each game, and we were able to get four games in.

One of the ACC folks I played with was Dennis Phillips, director of Pa-ra-Pines Peggers Club 142 in Para-dise CA. (Club codirector Barbara

Allen fills in when Dennis is away.) Dennis explained that most snow-birds head north beginning around the first of April. The locals continue to play through the summer.

So, thanks to Dave and the other Brown Baggers, Barry and I enjoyed a fun afternoon of cribbage and met some nice folks. We hope to be back next year.

Now for this month’s board. This leather board was in the mail when I returned home. It was sent to me by ACC member Terry Coons (OR-4220), a member of the Cribbage Board Collectors Society. She is

also the society’s webmaster and research chair. Over the years, Terry has provided a lot of information that has helped with my CBOM column.

This handmade board is very nicely tooled. If my collection has a specialty, it would be leather boards. So, thank you, Terry, for both the board and all your help. CW

GAME ONYouth Teaching Tip

It is easy to teach the basics of cribbage to a young

player. The real challenges come when trying to get them to

understand the game beyond recognizing 15s, runs, and pairs.

One key area to focus on to help a youth become a competitive

player is how to make good discarding decisions into the crib.

Many years ago, Russ Adams (Minneapolis MN) put together

an easy-to-follow, effective grid that addresses proper discarding.

He gave me permission to use it in my teaching endeavors, and it

has become an essential tool to help kids understand discarding

strategies. This handout is not part of my teaching manual, but is

available via email. I’ll be happy to shoot you a copy if you’d like to

use it for teaching purposes or to perhaps become a better player

yourself. Send your request to me at [email protected].

Youth NewsThe new Youth Master Point program is off and running and

generating a lot of enthusiasm among young tournament players.

Master points were issued at the fifth annual Memorial Youth

Cribbage Tournament in Sacramento CA on May 21. Results will

follow in the July column. A special thank you to Don Howard,

Larry Hassett, and Rick Allen for setting up the system.

Many thanks to Don Zeutschel (Puyallup WA) for donating

twelve cribbage boards to the youth program. They will soon find

good homes with some our new young players.

Want to conduct a youth tournament in your area? I will be

happy to help get it off the ground by sending official youth score-

cards and suggestions on how to make it a memorable event.

Contact me at [email protected].

Youth CribbageTo see sanctioned youth tournaments, go to cribbage.org and

click on “Youth Program” in the left column. Sanctioned youth

tournaments will be listed in the right column. Contact Don

tournaments. Contact Dan Zeisler ([email protected]) for

nonsanctioned tournaments and funding.

Street4thCribbage Stories from around the ACC

RememberingBY IRA T. DEUTSCH

When I was a member of Club 43 in Fre-mont CA, I got to know Charlie Dunn much better than when we’d merely been opponents in the past. So, when he died in 2014, although I disdain funerals, I went to Charlie’s.

The priest said something that really impacted me. To paraphrase, he said that the memories of those who had recently passed, like Charlie, can be kept alive by telling others of their lives and remem-bering them.

I obtained my first “Ira’s Towing” cap from Clarence Van Orso, the late pa-triarch of an old-line Oregon cribbage family. True, I had to chase Clarence for three tournaments until I finally got him to trade it with me, but every time I wear it I think and speak of him.

Don Bush was a member of Crescent

City’s Grass Roots club who has since passed on. I used to say “see one, play one” when playing a card that matched the cut card. But from Don, I learned to say “pair the board,” and now I say this in his memory.

Rich Scott of Carson City NV recently passed away. Besides his playing abilities, Rich made some unique pegs out of bird bone from India. I have several and play with them whenever I can, again in his memory.

So, let’s keep the memories of these past players alive. (Someday they’ll be talking about you and me.) Mention their names, tell of their exploits, cel-ebrate their accomplish-ments. CW

“Chronicling America” is a website that provides online access to a searchable da-tabase of US newspapers from 1836 to 1922. The project is sponsored jointly by the National Endowment for the Human-ities and the Library of Congress. Go to

chroniclingamerica.loc.gov and type absolutely anything you want in the search box. The earliest hit for “cribbage” comes from the August 12, 1836, edition of the Burlington (VT) Free Press.

Have you eaten in a restaurant where the menu or placemat includes advertisements from local organizations? The ads might be for car repair services, plumbers, gar-dening, and so on. A cribbage ad should work well there. Ads are normally business card size or larger and generally cost $50 to $200. The ad is normally good for a year

or two, and good through menu changes. Timing can be tricky as you may have to wait for a new advertising cycle to start. If you have such a restaurant nearby and are interested, contact them to be put on their waiting list.–Norm Nikodym ([email protected])

Arnie GroskreutzArnie Groskreutz (Mankato and Wells MN) passed away at age 88 on July 18, 2015. He was U.S. Navy veteran, award-ed the World War II Victory Medal, and discharged at the rank of Yeoman Third Class. Arnie was a public educator for twenty-nine years in Minnesota and Iowa before retiring in 1993. Arnie enjoyed cribbage and was always a gentleman on the boards. He held a 29-hand in 1999 and directed tournaments in Albert Lea MN many years ago. Due to health, he was not able to participate in tournaments in recent years.

Raymond SchenkRay “Junior” Schenk (Franklin, WI) died April 22 at age 75 from heart complica-tions/blood infections. Ray was a member of Milwaukee Club 6, had earned his Mas-

ter Award, and was close to his Bronze.

Kenneth Anthony SlamaKen Slama died on May 2 at age 92. Born on the family farm in North Dakota, he moved to California in 1952 and worked as a machinist for Douglas Aircraft and Rockwell International until his retire-ment in 1986. He then lived in Utah and Washington before returning to California in 2002. He loved cribbage (earning both Bronze and Master), poker, the Rams, the Dodgers, and a cold beer. Ken often said that cribbage saved his live. After moving to Washington, he endured some personal loss and was depressed. He found a crib-bage group that took him in and treated him like one of the family. He became quite active and truly loved and appreci-ated that group. His wry sense of humor will be missed.

25 Years Ago in the ACC

The cover of the June 1991 Cribbage World announced that rookie player Terry Nelson (Lebanon OR) won the Oregon Coast Classic main and Lee Chambers (then of Corvallis OR, now of Albany OR) the con-solation.

Elsewhere we read that Aggie Mikulsky (Sobies-ki WI) won the Capital City Classic in St. Paul MN. In addition, ACC membership in California topped 1,000 for the first time, and nationwide it was 5,875.

Thanks to all those who have seen and “liked” the new Facebook page: facebook.com/GrassRootsCribbage. We realize many folks are computer-shy, but it is the best way to see up-to-date info about all your friends across the country that may not get included in the monthly magazine. 28-hands normally don’t make it to this venue since they are so numer-ous, but notable events (like clubs or people

scoring two in one night, or on a player’s first night of play) rate a mention.

The GRP battles are heating up in many clubs. Central Wisconsin Cribbage Club 120 (Wisconsin Rapids WI) is seeing an epic battle at year end. With three weeks to go, GRP leader Mike Barrett has seen his brother Patrick steal the lead, scoring 59 points in the last three weeks, while Mike has been one game short of ratings points each week! Jerome Tork kept himself in this race by scoring a grand slam in the second half of the GRNT.

Greater Okaloosa Club 131 (Walton Beach FL)—Paul Hearon scored a mon-ster 21-point grand slam card with 235 plus points on April 20. They also had the rare event of two 28-hands happen in one night, held by Steve Flemming and Annette Seda.

Truckee/North Tahoe Sharks Club 222 (Truckee CA)—Bill Fitch came back to play after healing from a broken wrist, and those who helped him shuffle and deal also helped him to a grand slam! Oddly enough, this is the second time that a player with a broken wrist has scored first place in Club 222! Daryl Mills was the other one.

Halifax Area Club 230 (Ormond Beach FL) saw its first grand slam in a long time, with Alvin Lokitz winning 9 of 9.

Edmonton Peggers Club 261 (Edmonton AB) saw a grand slam result with this incredible play: Lorne Tanton is playing Gary Wirth, and he’s won his first eight

games. The score is 76 (Lorne dealing) to 99 (Gary). Lorne picks up 3-3-4-4-5-K. Through insanity (or genius!), he pitches 5-K to his crib and, according to Gary “I cut him the bleeping 5!” After pegging, hand, and crib, Lorne is at 110 with first count and Gary dealing at 112. Lorne picks up a perfect 2-2-3-4 that improves to victory after a 6 cut—pulling a grand slam from the jaws of defeat!

Yuma Snowbirds Club 267 (Yuma AZ)—Jerry Blackman and Dave McGuire scored grand slams. The club also doubled up on 28-hands: Helen Crocker and Bill Link both held 5-5-5-5 and cut face card.

Yankton Club 397 (Yankton SD) welcomed new player Jim Wehrer, and on his first night playing he scored a 28-hand!

Grass Roots Corner—continued from page 21

Gold Club 318 (Holmes PA) had two 28-hands in the same night, held by Mike

Fleming and Hugh Durkin.

Sometimes by playing a not so obvious card, we end up confusing our opponent and winning the pegging battle. You are dealer holding A-A-4-10. Your opponent leads a 7; what do you play? Almost instinctively you reach for your 10, but let’s think a second. If your opponent has 7-8-9-10, he might lead a 7. If he has 7-7-8-6, he would definitely lead a 7. So play your 4 and see what happens. In those two particular hands, the 4 response works much better than the 10. It is also highly unlikely the opponent has a 4 while leading a 7. So the next time you think you have an obvious play, take an extra moment to think of all the possibilities.
