‘Gone fishing’>> One five-day trip yielded 89 sailfishTANIA SANDBERG>>[email protected]

LOCAL motor vehicle dealership managerMike Gradwell is well-known in thecommunity for his great sense of humour,

honesty, expertise in vehicle sales, and his loveof fishing.

Born in 1960 in Addington Hospital, Grad-well is a millwright by trade.

“I didnot like the tradeand I thought Iwouldtry the motor industry.”

In1996he joinedVillageMallAuto inAman-zimtoti.

“In 1999 I was asked by the owner of KingKars, Rowan Hampson, to join them and I rantheusedcarsectionfor fouryears.Later I joinedthe McCarthy Group in both new and used-

vehicle divisions. I rejoined Rowan in 2012 torun the Hyundai Amanzimtoti dealership andhave been here since.”

Gradwell’s advice to used-vehicle buyers isnot to buy privately.

“Car dealerships put used cars through sev-eral checks. Toomany people come to the deal-ership with used cars they are hoping to tradein, only to find it is not in a good conditionor the vehicle they purchased privately hasbeen accident damaged and badly repaired.”

Hisphilosophyistobehonestwitheverycus-tomer.

“Iwill tellacustomerif I thinktheyshouldnotchange their vehicle.”

Gradwell says he fishes as much as he canand enjoys both fresh and saltwater fishing.

“My favourite spots are the Zambezi,

Malaysia, the Transkei andMozambique, but itis not always affordable, and time is a huge is-sue,” he says.

His most memorable trip is when theycaught 89 sailfish in five days in Malaysia andTiger fishing rates among his best.

He calls on the community to support local

business instead of going to other areas.“If I need something I look locally and then

negotiate pricing.“Peopletendtobuyelsewhereandthenwant

to service their vehicles locally. If they supportlocal, localbusinesseswill alsohave the resour-ces to help the community.”

Her granddaughter Toni was involved in dancingand you would always find Lesley helping at the danc-ing shows and at parents’ watching days.

In 2009 Lesley moved into Ponsettia Park. In June2010 she developed cellulitis in her legs and had tomove in with her daughter Christine Carroll as sheneeded 24-hour care.

Sadly she was constantly in pain from then on, hav-ing suffered with Parkinsons and osteoarthrisit.

On 10 December, 2014 she peacefully drifted offand was finally free from the pain she had sufferedfor so long.

I read with wonderment that CyrilRamaphosa is taking over the helm atEskom, the post office and SAA,movesthat are long overdue.

Why it has taken so long and usedmillions of thousands of taxpayers’money is beyondme, but nevertheless, something has to be done, especiallywith Nkandla being in the dark, alongwith the rest of South Africa.

This astute businessman is perfectfor the job, and another job he shouldpursue would be that of president, buthold on, I’m getting way ahead of my-self.

Let’s see how he does with his newmandates first — then we watch andsee.

Thegovernment and the rulingpar-ty are like ostriches, burying theirheadsinthesand(althoughfactsrevealthat they don’t) hoping that no onewillnotice what’s going on around them—the chaos, the lawlessness, the crime, fraud, the corruption, the nepotism—and where is JZ, I ask.

Well that remains to be seen as hehasn’t been heard of a lot lately — ohyes, mostlyhe’soverseastryingtorattleup trade with other countries, while“our Rome burns”.

Ramaphosa, please help us get outof this mess as we are following thesame path as Zimbabwewent and get-ting there faster every day.

When does a carbecome a classic?>> 1969 VW Beetle is considered a classic

IT’S a definition dilemma and a burningquestion among car enthusiasts —when does a car become a classic?

Agreeing on an impalpable point in timethat constitutes a “Classic Car” definitionis rather challenging.

While one can consider a veteran car tobe one built before World War 1, a vintagecar to be one built before 1930 and post-vintage a classification used for cars builtbetween 1930 and the end of World War2, there is definitely a grey area on whatcars built after this point are considered tobe.

Some may consider a car made in thefifties as a classic. Although there is no pre-

cise definition, the Classic Car Club ofAmerica considers a car to be classic if agedbetween 30 and 49 years, and modernclassics are defined as cars aged between15 and 25.

Aside from age, there also has to besome aesthetic appeal for a car to be con-sidered a classic and appreciated as such.Whether this be the design, colour or time-less engineering, a classic beauty needs tohave a somewhat subtle envy factor.

So would a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle beconsidered a classic? Absolutely.

The Volkswagen Type 1, affectionatelythe Volkswagen Bug or Beetle, is renownedfor being one of the first rear-engined cars

ever launched. With more than 21 millionmanufactured since its inception in 1938,the Beetle is the longest-running andmost-manufactured car of a single designplatform worldwide and, as the years havepassed, various models have come andgone.

Despite this, the Beetle has most cer-tainly stood the test of time given that the“new Beetle” was launched in 1998.

Placed fourth in an international pollfor the world’s most influential car of the20th century undertaken in 1999, the VWBeetle will go down in history as one of themost classic cars.

Despite being around for over 70 years,it never loses its appeal. As an ideal firstcollector car, the Beetle is a firm favouriteamong classic car enthusiasts.

How does one get their hands on aclassic VW Beetle? Well, there are varioussellers worldwide that you could purchase

one from and subsequently embark on arewarding restoration project.

Vehicle first-aid kit essentials

DRIVERS should always do their best tobe prepared to respond to any emer-gency. Even though you may not betrained medical professionals there areoften small bits of assistance one canprovide with first-aid and an effectiveand fast response to smaller emergen-cies.

Arrive Alive advises drivers to travelwithafirst-aidkitinvehiclesorhaveoneat home.

Many of us could do with some ad-vice on what’s needed in such an emer-gency medical kit so Arrive Alive ap-proached road-safety partner ER24with questions about emergency pre-paredness — and that emergency kit.

A first-aid kit should not be a hassleto take with you on holiday or keep inyour vehicle.

A good size is usually somethingthat can fit comfortably into your cubbyhole or one size larger that you keep inthe boot of your vehicle.

What would be the most importantpieces of equipment and supplies insuch an emergency medical kit?

Items to treat burn wounds, cuts, bruises, splint a fracture, band aids, scissors, tweezer, treatment for insectbites and stings as well as disinfectant. If you prefer to keep medicine in yourfirst-aid kit — headache tablets, anti-nausea and vomiting.

It is important that only a responsi-ble adult make use of these medica-tions and that no prescription medica-tions are kept in the first-aid kit.

Also do not administer yourprescription medication to someoneelse, even if you use the same medica-tion.

What would be the most importantessentials to carry in a mini-kit.

Bandages, band aids and anti-sep-tic solution. Sunblock would also be agood item to keep in your first-aid kitas well as after-sun lotion. The content

of your first-aid kit largely depend onwhere you will be travelling to and whatis most likely to happen. If you are a reg-

ular outdoorsman you would knowwhat happened before and what youneeded.

What are the most common mis-takes amateurs tend to make when try-ing to perform first aid?

Be smart and keep the right thingsin your first-aid kit. The most importantthings are a CPR mouthpiece shouldyou need to perform CPR, something tostop bleeding and splint fractures.

This includes band aids, bandages, dressings, strapping, gauze etc.

Probably the most important of allis medical gloves. Protect yourself be-fore you try and help others. This shouldbe in every first-aid kit, regardless if youintend to use it on your family or not.

Are there specific measures the am-ateur responder in an emergencyshould rather avoid and leave to thetrained professionals?

If you are unsure contact ER24 on084 124 and ask for medical advice.

Do not do something because yousaw it on television or saw a medic doit once.
