“The community had report-

ed the condition of the seweragetreatment works to AfriForum,saying raw sewage was spillinginto the ocean,” said Fourie. Up-on insecting the site, he was da-tained but then released. Hewasalsochargedwithcrimeninjuria.

Fourie had voiced his con-cernsabout the sewerplant inanaudit conducted in July 2014. Asthemunicipalitydidnotrespond,

he visit the site again.“I stopped at the entrance of

the plant, the access gate wasopenandthesecurityofficialwasvisible insidehis booth. I enteredtheplantafterthesecurityofficialfailed to come out. He however,approachedme laterwhile I wastakingphotosoftheplant,andre-quested me to complete the visi-tor’s register. At no stage did the

security official inform me that Iwas trespassing and that I had toleave the premises,” Fourie ex-plained.

When asked why he thoughthe was detained, Fourie said hebelieved he had asked questionsabout the plant previously andthat the municipality wanted tokeep the spillageoutof thepubliceye.

Two injured in car crash>> Vehicles collided into each other

TWOmen were injured in anaccidenton theN2southbe-tween Umgababa and

Umkomaas on Tuesday.It is alleged that both vehicles

were travelling south when onecollided into the other.

“The vehicles veered out ofcontrol off the highway up anembankment and came to rest

about 70 metres apart,” saidNetcare spokesperson, ChrisBotha.

Netcare 911 and the provincialparamedics found the two drivers

at the side of the roadway.After the patients were treated

at the scene paramedics trans-ported them to hospital.

“Constable Bongani Ciliza and Constable Gary Govender are charging the threesuspects for being in possession drugs,”said police spokesperson, LieutenantColonel Zandra Wiid.

Fourandahalf mandrax tablets,three straws of heroin, four straws of heroin, 27 straws of heroin and 10 mandrax tablets respectively, were confiscated. Cashand cellphones were also confiscated.

Nqambi and her family went out to get take-awaysasloadingsheddinghadkickedin.Ontheirreturn she

noticed that her laptop, hair clipper and herson’s jacket had been stolen.

Nqambi called the dog unit as advised by herneighbour.

“Thedogunitpatrolledthearealookingforthesuspects. While I was giving them a statementabout10minuteslater, theunithadrecoveredthestolen items.

“Iamashamedtosaythatwealwayscomplainaboutthepolicenotdoingtheirjobandhowreluc-tant they are to catch criminals,” she said.

Burst pipe floods Marburg

AMARBURGresidenthassaidthatheiscon-cerned that a lot of water has gone to wastewhileUguis taking its timeto fixaburstpipe.

SivaGovendersharedhisconcernsabouta burst main Ugu water pipe that feeds hisresidential area on SeaviewRoad and LionsGroove.

Govendersaid that for thepast twoweeksthe pipe has been leaking. He said Ugu hasbeentofixthepipe,buthasnotbeensuccess-ful.

Govender also said that for two days the

areahasbeen suffering fromwater shortag-es because of this pipe.

Ugu District Municipality was contactedfor comment and SiphoKhuzwayo said thatits a technical system error which may be aresult of ageing pipes.

“A burst pipe can be expected at any timeespeciallybecauseof the rainand theperiodwhen the pipe was installed.

He said the technical teamwill be lookinginto the situation.

Nkabinde said they will be visitingother areas to solicit views and inputfrom general membership on Veca’sstrategic direction.

“Wewill be explaining Veca’s objec-tives and vision to non-members,” shesaid.

“Veca opens business opportunitiesthroughBBBEE, training anddevelop-mentofmembersandmentorship,ser-vices to members, as well as profes-sional services at reduced rates,” said

“I see myself as the next DJ Lishofrom Durban. That woman really in-spires and motivates me to workharder,” she said

It takes a villageAS soontobe parents, some of you

may have attended a prescribed prenatal class but how many of you

took parenting skills classes?Parenting is a demanding job, and re

quires a great deal of knowledge before itgets easier. Think about how you wereraised, some things were great but somethings fell short and left you frustrated andunprepared. You have a responsibility to

your child to make changes and improve onthe way you will raise your children andfamily.

Start by realising you need, want andbelieve you can change. Open your mind toa new way of thinking, change your habitsand leave the past behind you. Ask for helpand advice from friends and family, it takesa village to raise a child and you don’t haveto do it all by yourself. Having a support sys

tem you can count on to help you as a parent is vital.

For some it is a spouse, grandparents orsiblings and for others its neighbours,churches, community organisations andfriends.Asaparentyouarenotasuperhero,even if your children expect you to be. Justlike your children need rest, nourishmentand encouragement, so do you. A burntout parent is no good for any family. Yoursupport system must be there to give thisdown time, to give you guidance when

needed and help out when you feelstressed and need a break. Asking for helpis what brings a family and communitycloser together, and by allowing other tohelp, you also give them purpose.

Don’t be afraid to fail at a task, thereare no perfect parents, but a good parentwill pick themselves up and try again, until

eventually they succeed moretime than they fail.

The big opportunityAT a recent tourism workshop inDurban, theCEOofTourismKwaZulu-Natal indicated that as a province wearereallyweakinpresentingpackagedexperiences to both the consumer andthe trade.

Quite simply it seems thathospitali-ty establishments, transportationcompanies,guidesandspecialistprod-uct owners have in many cases andareas not been creative in packaging aset of visitor options that would sup-port their collective enterprises.

TheSouthCoast isnoexceptionandwe have regularly requested tourismpractitioners to get into packagingmode.Wearenottouroperatorsorsell-ers of packaged itineraries nor are welegally competent to contract with thepublic or trade when it comes to bind-ing salesagreements. If suchpackageswerepresentable,wewouldhavenois-sue in promoting the options at the

manyshowandpromotionsweattend-the conclusion of business being thepackagepromotersdomainthereafter.

This element of passiveness has ledusto theconclusionthat there isabusi-ness opportunity awaiting competentandlegitimatetourismpractitioners inour area.

There is a big opportunity for a touroperators to specialise in the packag-ingandpromotionofitinerariesspecif-

ic to the Greater South Coast (there isthat much to sell) and possibly safaritrips as close to our paradise as possi-ble. We have found that many travelagencies here derive their businessthroughmainlyoutboundtravelwhichis of little use to our own industry-hence the opportunity.

Inawaythis isan invitation toread-ers andourmembers thatweareopento dialogue with any party that sharesour view and we will happily assist inaffording such an enterprise to grow aprofessionallyandcompetitivelypack-aged product base for specifically in-bound tourism.

Summer-season research has indi-catedtherearesignsof increasedover-seasvisitationtothisregion(evenfromIceland) and how better to grow thattourism prospect than the private sec-tor getting their teeth into a part of thisrichpiewhilewedothedestinationsellhere and abroad.

Wethought theCEOofEskomTshe-disoMatonaprobablygot it rightwhenhe said in no uncertain a manner thatEskom’s failings were due to a lack ofmaintenance over the years.

We were disconcerted when possi-bly themosteffectivecommunicatorofrecentyears,AndrewEtzinger,hadhistonguestilledbecausehis fluentexpla-nations became un-acceptabletotherul-ing party.

At a time whenour daily visits ofstage two blackoutsare punctuated byan incident whenEskom passedthrough the thresh-old of third stageblackouts, howwor-ried should we be by the bland assur-ancefromtheutilitythatthereisnottheslightest possibility of a total blackout.

If our figuresarecorrectEskomhasa generating capacity of about 9000megawatts.

New leadership needed at UguTHEfinancialauditofUguDistrictMunicipality isbecominganunre-mitting culture. The continuingpoor state of Ugu’s financial man-agement is a grave concern. Thisis despite thegovernment’s sever-al attempts promulgated as initia-tives to improve local governmentfinancial management as the en-gine necessary for service deliv-ery. These initiatives include,among others, 2014 Clean AuditCampaign, the Local GovernmentTurnaround Strategy and the ap-plicationofSection139of theCon-stitution.

Significant strides have beenmade towards the promise of de-velopmental local government es-pousedintheConstitution,but it iswithouttheshadowofadoubtthatUgu’s finances still face complexchallenges. Of grievous concern isthat Ugu’s financial managementprocessesandsystemsare socha-otic that they have a negative im-pact on good governance, whichaffects service delivery.

The wave of service deliveryprotests and the recent audit out-come is disconcerting. This is at-tributedto,amongothers, the lackof competencies, lack of conse-quences for poor performancesand transgressions, and the slowresponsebypolitical leadership inaddressing the causes of the pooroutcomes. The emphasis shouldshift towards embedding a new

culture that will influence a realchange in the systems that drivemunicipal finances. It is the re-sponsibility of municipal officialsto respect, protect and fulfil socio-economic rights of Ugu communi-ty through prudent managementof municipal financial resources.

A non-negotiable new cultureof municipal finance grounded inprofessionalism, value formoney,respect for customers and theirrights, commitment, responsibili-ty,accountabilityandefficientsys-tems of local government, can as-sistUgutoachievetheobjectsoflo-cal government.

Theshift towardsanewcultureof good governance should bedriven by high-level thinkers andvisionarymunicipalleaderswithaclear strategy. Municipal leader-shipshoulddealwiththechalleng-es,includingthedeficitinfinancialskills. Simply put, the pervasive-nessof themunicipal financialcri-sis in Ugu demands a new cultureand leadership, and a new visionfor conducting the finance busi-ness of the municipality. A newleadership, mayor to be exact, isrequired to turn things aroundandbuild an openopportunity so-ciety for all.

IF you are looking for employment or have avacancy, the South Coast Jobs Facebook group isjust for you.With over 8 300 members and about 30 requests

to join every day, the group is growing at a fast paceand members have some very inspiring stories to tell.

A local woman, Diana Rogers, says she started thegroup in 2011 after she was retrenched.

She found it was not very easy to get back intothe jobsearching game and due to being selfdrivenshe managed to get another job not long after herretrenchment.

She then decided that she wanted to help peopleget work as everyone somehow needs a helping hand.

Her solution was to start the group South CoastJobs.

In March 2013, Sue Hulley took over as administrator for the group as Rogers found she had very littletime to manage the page by herself.

“Diana visits from time to time and loves readingthe successes as it makes her feel as though she hassome influence in someone’s life,” said Hulley.

Hulley works fulltime as a bookkeeper for a construction company but has spare time which she dedicates to assisting groups run smoothly.

“My hobby as a researcher gives me the desireand ability to share job vacancies with people,” shesaid.

She added that there are many types of peoplein the group who come from different backgrounds– from desperate school leavers to fulltime adult careerseekerstopensionerslookingtosupplementtheirincome.

“We also had a few scammers in the beginning,which were weeded out quickly,” she said.

Hulley noticed that many members either did nothave a CV or did not know how to go about compilingone, so she posted a template to the group.

“This is available under the files section page ofthe group,” she said.

Job recruitment companies are encouraged to jointhegroupandposttheirvacancies.Privatecompaniesare also welcome to join.

“Wehavealotofindividualbusinessesandrecruitment agencies that advertise on the page. Thank youso much for letting our members know about yourvacancies.”

While some don’t see the need for groups to have

strict rules, Hulley said it helps weed out the “spammers, scammers and troublemakers”.

“I have strict rules to keep the chaos and spamming of the group down to a bare minimum. The ruleof English only needed to be implemented for adminmonitoring,” she said.

PearlsBe sure to take off your pearl rings before you apply

hand and body creams. Wipe your pearls with a soft,lintfree cloth as soon as you take them off. The clothcan be dampened with water or it can be dry. If damp,allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away.Dirty pearls can be cleaned with a mild soap and watersolution. Never clean your pearls with solutions thatcontain ammonia or harsh detergents.

How to get rid of algaeAlmosteveryswimmingpoolownerhas,at

one timeoranother,donebattlewith theocca-sionalgreenspotsandmurkypoolwater.Dur-ingthewindyseasonsandsummerstorms,al-gaesporescontaminateapool,drivenbywindand rain. When pool water is unbalanced, al-gae spots can occur seemingly overnight.

Warmtemperatures,sunlightandthepres-enceofnitratesand/orcarbondioxide-all caneasily create the perfect situation. Of course,alackofpropercirculation,filtrationandsani-tation may be the primary cause of the algae.

Like the weeds in your garden eventuallyovertake when left unattended, algae buildsuptosuchalevelthatisclogsupthefilter-min-imisingfiltereffectivenessandrequiringmorebackwashing. Algae also consumes chlorinethat should be working on other contami-nants.

Black algaeIf youwake up onemorning and find black

algaespotsonthesidesofyourmarbelitepool,it's time to take immediate action. Black algaespots occur in swimming pool water that hasalowfreechlorineleveland/orthepoolchemi-cals are unbalanced. Good circulation is amust!

Becauseblackalgaeisresistanttochlorine,throwing in a couple of cups of chlorine - orevena shockpack -won't haveany effect. Theonly way to get rid of black algae is to use thecorrectchemicals,astiffpoolbrushandalgae-cide.

It's not an easy process to remove black al-gae spots, so be prepared to roll up yoursleeves, slap on some suntan lotion and beready to start brushing loose the algae. Be-cause black algae forms a protective barrieraround itself, you need to brush the affectedareas really hardwith a stiff brush, so that analgaecide can do the job.

Once all the black algae has been brushedoff, pour algaecide into the pool; leaving thepumpoffovernight,orasspecifiedbytheman-ufacturer.

Brush again in the morning, adjust the pHand correct the chlorine level. Keep your poolchlorine level adjusted to 7.2 - 7.6) to preventreoccurrence and the chlorine residual at1.0-3.0ppm.

Common treatment:. Test thepHof yourwaterandadjust tobe-

While correct chemical balance and sani-tizer residuals will prevent many opportuni-ties foralgaetobloom,apoolwithhighpHandlow chlorine can give algae a growth boost. Itisessential thatregular,preferablydaily,emp-tyingoffilterbasketsbedone,asorganicmate-rial and bacteria can contribute to algaegrowth and regular brushing of the sides of amarbellite pool prevents algae growth.

Common treatment:. Test thepHof yourwaterandadjust tobe-

Where a pool is filled from a borehole it'sagood idea to takeasampleofyourpoolwaterto have it tested for metals and it is essentialto useMetal Remover regularlywhen toppingup a pool, becausemetal stains can be almostimpossible to remove.

air as teams busy themselves with the finalpreparations.

The fun-filled event for charity will takeplace along theUmzimkuluRiver on21Febru-ary and about 600 participants and an equalnumber of spectators are expected to attend.

“There is a lot of excitement in the air,” saidBullslingers clubmemberErnstMeier. He saidthe Bullslingers’ eight activemembers are “up

to their eyeballs” in preparatory paperwork,including permissions, approvals, safety, heli-copters, and licensing for the big day.

“It isextremelydifficultandverystressfull toplanbecause participants usually leave it up tothe lastminute to enter,” saidMeier. The excit-ing line-up includes a performance by DaveMarks and his band, fun activities by Coca-Co-la,aswellasMissTubeRaceandMrStrongmanpageant. Therewill alsobeabraai areaaswellas a beer garden.

The race started in 1977 when a group offriends, including current Bullslingers mem-ber Collin Lee, took a bet and raced ending upunder the bridge by the rivermouth. Bullsling-ersthenadopteditasoneofitsannualfundrais-er events. The tube race turned out to be oneof its more successful fundraisers, raising be-tween R40 000 and R50 000 annually. All pro-ceeds are used to help individual needy chil-dren.“The club exist solely to help individual chil-

as well as a broken heart, the notion ofopening one score fully and unconditionally inthis daunting perpetual season, is respectfullydisconcerting. However, the older we get, wecome to realise that at some instance,wemusttake that leap of faith, for what is life withoutlove. Love is a basic word until you find some-one to give it definition.

Simple chocolate truffles· 2 ½ cups chocolate of your choice (dark,

sweet, milk, white)· 1 cup cream· 2 tablespoons softened unsalted butter· 1 cup cocoa powder· 2 cups chocolate· 1 cup finely chopped pistachio nutsMethod· Cut the chocolate into small cubes·Melt thechocolate,butterandcreamwhisk

together and set aside to cool· Cover with plastic wrap and place in the

fridge till firm (two hours + or overnight)· Place the cocoa powder in a large bowl set

aside·Dividetheganacheintoequalportionsonto

a grease proof paper· Melt the remaining chocolate· Drop one ganache into the cocoa powder

and roll into a ball· Then drop into the chocolate remove with

a fork and roll in your coating of choice place

AGE 26The fact alltime great Viv Richards has described the Indian vicecaptain as “alreadylegendary” is a fair indication of the potential Kohli carries into his second World Cup.

Kohli is a proven performer in all formsof the game, recently notching four centuries in a fourTest series in Australia.

He failed to get into doublefigures infour innings during an ODI triseries afterthe Tests as captain MS Dhoni tinkeredwith the batting order.

Kohli was a youngster at the last WorldCup but still tallied 282 runs including acentury and a halfcentury.

With the likes of the retired Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhirand Yuvraj Singh not around, Kohli is expected to take command of the battinglineup.

He has the ability to dominate bowlingwithout taking risks, which can prove vitalon the pitches of Australia and New Zealand.

Though the team boast twotime ODIdoublecentury maker Rohit Sharma andacclaimed finisher Dhoni in the battinglineup, Kohli remains the vital cog with hisconsistency and ability to blend cautionwith aggression.

Kohli, ranked three among ODI batsmen, has slammed 21 centuries in 150 ODIsat an average of almost 52.

MITCHELL JOHNSONAUSTRALIA

AGE 33Mitchell Johnson is not the type to worrywhen he enters the attack. Be it with thenew ball or first change, the leftarm paceman can change the complexion of a gamewith his blend of express pace and aggression.

He can not only swing the ball late butalso extract sharp bounce and has provenhimself in crunch situations with bat andball in Tests and ODIs.

He was out of action for a month dueto a hamstring injury but returned for a triseries final against England, when histhreewicket burst put Australia on trackfor an easy win.

Home conditions and the aim of regaining the Cup should be incentive enough forJohnson to be at his best.

Johnson, who has 224 wickets and 920runs with a highest score of 73 not out from145 ODIs, will be part of the World Cup forthe third time, though he did not get to playa game in 2007 when Australia won in theWest Indies.

In 2011, he took 10 wickets from sevenmatches, including fourwicket haulsagainst Zimbabwe and New Zealand.

BRENDON MCCULLUMNEW ZEALAND

AGE 33The Black Caps captain could be the bestbatsman on view if he can get close to theform he hit in Tests last year, when hescored more than 1 000 runs.

He became the first New Zealander toscore a Test triplecentury and alsonotched two doublehundreds to join aselect band. He capped the year with 195off 134 balls against Sri Lanka.

Cohosting the World Cup also presentsMcCullum with the opportunity to ensurepeople remember him as much for his ODIefforts as for his Test and T20performances.

McCullum, who also kept wicket untilrecently, is a feared batsmen. His loftedshots, scoops and reversesweeps makehim a tough customer. He is the only playerto have scored two T20 internationalcenturies and also the highest scorer in theformat with 2 105 runs from 70 games.

McCullum averages over 35 in T20s butonly around 30 in ODIs. In three previousWorld Cups, he has 414 runs from 25 gameswith one century.

Cricket World Cup’s ‘Big Five’The Cricket World Cup will be staged in New Zealand and Australia for the first time since 1992, from

February 14 to March 20. With no clearcut favourites, expect to see some clean hitting and highstrike rates in conditions that are expected to give the bat slight advantage over the ball. Alldisciplines considered, these could be the five players to watch as the tournament unfolds.
