South Coast to host‘Expedition Africa’

IT’S all systemsgo for theworldfamous Expedition Africa totake place on the South Coast

between 25 and 31 May.The international event - host-

ed by Kinetic Events - involvesmountainbiking, trekking, kayak-ing,swimming,ropeworkandori-enteering.

Organisers met with SouthCoast Tourism in Port Edward tosign the deal last Saturday, aftermonths of negotiations, arrange-ments and discussions,

The terrain used for the eventwill be along the Wild Coast withthe host town being Port Edward.

Over 20 national and 20 inter-national teams are signing up forwhat is to be one of themost excit-ingeventsonthisyear’seventscal-endar.

The excitement doesn’t endthere. With Expedition Africa, thename of the game is teamwork.

Teams will navigate using amap and landmarks and will en-counter harsh remote environ-ments in all weather conditions.Teams will travel day and nightandcandecide if,whenandwhereto rest.

The first team to complete allthe expedition legs and visiting allthe control points will be declaredthe winner.

South Coast Tourism CEO Jus-tin Mackrory said him and histeam are thrilled that the SouthCoast is to host to this ground-breaking event.

“Not only is South Africa al-ready ranking very high interna-tionally having won fifth place intheworldchamps inCostaRicare-cently, but to have over 40 teamsjoin us from around the world inourpieceofparadiseisatrueprivi-lege,” said Mackrory.

Also in attendance at themeet-ing was Nikki Tilley, marketingand events specialist for SouthCoast Tourism.

“Worldmediaarewatchingtoo.Every adventure racing teambrings their own media personwho will then be uploading visualand other content to social mediaand television daily to their home

countries,” she said.“We are incredibly fortunate to

be able to work with 20 mediaagencies and journalists fromaround the world in such a wayandto furtherdevelopnetworks tobuild on other sporting events onthe South Coast,” said Tilley.

The eventwill attract 160 com-petitors who will stay in andaround theSouthCoast for thedu-ration of the week-long event inaddition to the additional days

which they need to spend here toacclimatise.

Acclimatisation for teams fromaround the world works on onehour toonedayspenthereprior tothe event. Therefore if a team hasa time change of five hours, theywill need to spend an additionalfive days here.

Event organisers are passion-ateabouttheareawithdiscussionsunder way to host the 2016 worldchampionshipsontheSouthCoast

as well.There are still some opportuni-

tiesshouldthepublicwishtobein-volved with this event, such as as-sistingwiththecommunityprojectby supplying 80 branded T-shirtsand lunch boxes for the childrenand4x4vehicles toassistwithme-dia transport.

At a joint partnership dealand memorandum of under-standing signed by the Hibis-cus Coast Municipal ManagerMaxMbiliandSancoDevelop-ment Institute CEO SiphoKhuzwayo at council cham-bers, journalists were told onThursday that themunicipali-ty has entered into a three-year partnership with theSouth African National RoadAccident Fund to fund a pot-hole-fixingpilotprojectwhichwill be implemented androlled out by the Sanco Devel-opment Institute.

Mbili said the RoadAccident Fund has given themunicipality R1,5 million forthis financial year andwill getadditional funding for the2015 to 2016 financial year.

“Thismoneywillbeusedtorecruit co-operatives andbenefit military veterans,family members, child-head-ed families and unemployedpeople from disadvantagedbackgrounds. The purpose isto empower local people eco-nomicallyand involve theminthe roll-out of infrastructuraldevelopment and create job

opportunities for them,” saidMbili.

He stressed that this part-nership is three-legged as itinvolves themunicipality as abeneficiary of a pilot projectthatwillberolledoutnational-ly.

Khuzwayo said they theywill ensure quality workman-ship from the co-operatives.

“The new recruited co-op-eratives will be trained tocomply with quality assur-

ance standards.”He said that this is a coun-

trywide pilot project, budgetpermitting.

“We want to reduce thenumberofpeoplewhodependon social grants to survive.

“Sowewanted tobea stra-tegic partner of local munici-palities.

“We are here to endorseand bless this project as part-ners to fight potholes on ourroads,” said Khuzwayo.

A 23-YEAR-OLD man, Nksoningphilile Mgwali,from Bizana got into difficulty at Silver Beach,Port Edward last Saturday just after 2pm, anddrowned.

Lifeguards and National Sea Rescue Institutemembers pulled him from the sea and started re-suscitation.

EVERY day about 150 pupils are left to loi-ter in Margate Middle School corridors forhours, not because they want to or are al-lowed to, but because there are notenough teachers.

The area ward councillor, JeanSchmidt, said he had received phone callsfrom many parents who were concernedabout the situation at the school andtheir children.

“A group of parents contacted me andsaid they were not happy that their chil-dren were not being taught. I visited theschool and saw what was going on,” saidSchmidt.

It appears that the Department ofEducation requested that the school be

transformed from a “middle school” to asecondary school in 2014.

It now has new premises and is ableto accommodate more pupils.

However, what the education depart-ment failed to do is employ more teach-ers and provide additional learning sup-plies and equipment.

Prior to this, the school comprised dry-wall structures with only Grade 8 andGrade 9 pupils.

“At the beginning of the year, an addi-tional 150 pupils arrived at the school,but there were no desks and chairs forthese children. After pleading with the[education] department our request wasmet,” said a source.

One of the teachers, who wants to re-main anonymous, said teaching was nolonger a pleasure.

“With a class of 72 children, it’s diffi-cult. The children seated at the back of theroom cannot hear me, and I cannot give

these children when we are not given thecorrect tools?”

A source confirmed that two addition-al teachers reported to the school lastweek, but more are needed.

The school currently has 14 teachersand requires at least three more.

Other facilities that need attentionare the biology lab, which has no appara-tus, and a library that has no books; andthe sports field is incomplete.

Department of Education spokesper-son Sihle Moltshwa failed to respondto numerous requests for comment overa two-week period.

Fundraising team leader Pas-tor Rolf Olsen said they visitedKwaMashosha in2012and foundits condition in a sorry state withunpleasant teachingand learningconditions.

“When I camehere for the firsttime I said I would be a partner ofthis school.We formed a partner-ship to assist each other. I wentback to Norway and fundraisedwith pupils fromour high schoolssothatwecoulddonatetothehighschool.

“We have so far renovated sixclassrooms. We have done ourpart, theirsistomaketheenviron-mentandclimategoodforustoas-sist. We will continue [and com-plete]renovationsintherestoftheschool and its toilets by Marchnext year,” said Olsen.

This follows their recent ground-breaking meeting when theyannounced their first partnershipdeal to work together as partners inpromoting sustainable tourismbusiness for the lower South Coast.

In a media statement the two or-ganisations said the nature of theirpartnership involves collaborationinmarketingmaterialsand focusingondevelopinggreaterbusinesstour-ism.

They had turned green and we were doing60 km/h. We were overtaken by one of thosebakkie-based tow trucks — registrationNPS 30734.

Itwentpastusasifwewerestandingstillandshot through the traffic lights.

It must have been doing a good 120 km/h.

To pass us it drove in the oncoming lane.Thank God that the traffic didn’t change,

and no pedestrian tried to cross the road.Subsequently, we passed it near Seaslopes

Road, where two cars appeared to have had aminor accident.

One day this person could well kill himselfand unfortunately, he will probably kill some-one else at the same time.

The total operation was a huge success.Many structures, which had been served

with notices before were removed from thebush. A newly erected dwelling which can al-mostbe termedasa“three-bedroomunit”wasdiscoveredandProtectionServiceswill furnishan eviction notice for its removal.

Slowly but surely we are getting rid of theillegal vagrants along our beaches whichshould definitely have a bearing on our crimestatistics.

HATS off to South Coast TourismCEO Justin Mackrory for pullingwhat is certainly a coup for theSouth Coast with the ExpeditionAfrica taking place later this year.

This event (see page 1), promis-es to pull in tourists, like AfricaBike Week, and be a huge cash in-jection into our economy, which isvery exciting.

Not only that, but there will benational and international focus onour coast with this high-profileevent.

This is all great for the SouthCoast, but, and here comes thatword “but”, and it should be takenvery seriously.

The municipality should realisethe importance of this event to thelocal economy and it’s stakeholdersand catch a “wake-up” fast.

HCM and Ugu should take veryseriously its responsibilities rightnow and start preparing.

This means that by the time thisevent happens potholes should begone.

The beaches should be pristine.There should be absolutely noglitches with water. Our verges,pavements and the general de-meanor of our South Coast shouldlook like the Western Cape.

This is only fair to Mackrory, histeam and to local business peoplewho are counting on this revenue,and to residents who want to feelproud of their home.

If teams are coming from allover South Africa and overseas wewant to put our best foot forwardand have visitors not see one singleglitch.

Come on local government andprove that it can be done by May.

“No more free post boxes in Margate”.Last year we Uvongo residents were also

advised thatwewouldhave topay for ourpostboxes as domestic deliveries were now beingmade.

So Inotifiedeveryone Ineeded toofmynewresidential postal address, and waited for mymail to be delivered to me. Fortunately, I wasabletoretainmypostboxinthemeantime, justin case the street deliveries didn’twork out af-ter all.

Theresidentialdeliveryservice ishopeless.Mail is delivered only about once a month. Itis delivered to any old address within maybeone kilometre of my home, so I often get mailfor anybody in my area, while much of what Ishouldbe receivingnever arrives. In addition,the letters often come with splotchy brownstainsonthem,thecornerseatenawayandtheedges frilled by tiny teeth marks, clearly thework of insects or rats.

Like the post card sent airmail fromSinga-porewhicharrivedafter twomonths, thehap-py holidaymessage almost obliterated by oneof these hungry little creatures feasting awayfor the weeks, the postcard lay about some-where before being delivered.

Obviously, I return all damagedmail to thepost office by way of complaint and seekingcomment, but you can guess how far that gotme. This year Ihaveagainadvisedall relevantparties of my change of postal address – backto a post-box number – and have resolved topay the R300 or whatever I am charged to re-tain it.Yes,highwayrobberyyetagain,butoneisobligedtopayforapostboxtohaveanyhopeof (fairly) efficient postal delivery.

struction, fromMurchison to Port Shepstone,is scary, especially going down the notoriousSugarbush Hill.

We take our lives into our hands every daywe travel on it.Driversbecome frustratedget-ting stuck behind the slow construction vehi-clesandwemustcrawlinfirstandsecondgearthe whole way up, thus taking chances andovertaking other vehicles when we shouldn’t- taxis being the worst offenders.

And the speedvehicles go - especially largeand heavy ones, because when they do get arun it is frighteningwhen they are behind yougoingdown thehill, or approachingyouwhenyou are going up the hill.

As a result there have been quite a fewbadaccidents because of this.

WehearofoneortwoaweekandIamreallysurprised there have not been more, and theroad is going to be like this for about anothertwo years. Nevertheless it will be nicewhen itis finished.

The tar has also been gougedout on the re-mainingdrivableroadrightupuntil theBuild-er’s Trade depot and has been like that formonths,whichmakesitmorehazardousdriv-ing, exposing old potholes and wearing outtyres sooner.

show at rallies and marches and atany opportunity to speak outagainst abuse of the nation’s chil-dren.

Yet the education system is thebiggest abuse of children I haveseen.

President Jacob Zuma actuallygot applause for the pass rate in

our schools.A pass rate which is just a figure

and is appalling, considering thedropped standards and shockingeducation the majority of our chil-dren are subjected to.

Too many children sit at theirdesks with no teacher in front ofthem – their teacher is at his or her“second job”. The children mustfare for themselves. The headmas-

ter is running his taxi business,and there is no discipline in theschool.

Children leave school as youngadults barely able to read andwrite, use a computer or add up arow of figures.

If they are unable to find em-ployment they are reduced to hav-ing babies to get access to childgrants (if they are girls) or some-

how scrounging a few rands fromother social grants.

The ANC has reduced our coun-try to a nation of beggars and theyare applauded in Parliament. Weshould rather hang our heads inshame.

Unless you are part of the luckyfew able to send your children todecent schools with dedicatedteachers, your children will suffer.

There are too few teachers whorealise the importance of theirwork - educating the future leadersof our country.

RECENTLY I got wind of acomment made by a mem-ber of the public (let’s call

him Norman) who suggested thattourism on the South Coast onlyopens its eyes when Africa BikeWeek comes to town.

I am not sure where Norm hasbeen hibernating but from UguSouth Coast Tourism’s point ofview we have certainly not beenslumbering. Our events, market-ing and media section has neverbeen busier.

From an eventing perspective,we have a set of supported events(and the list is growing) that in-clude Africa Marine and LeisureExpo in Scottburgh, peak seasonbeach events four times per an-num (and including some 52 eventdays during the summer seasonalone), the Lighthouse Festival inPort Shepstone, Portuguese Festi-

val at Port Edward, SA SchoolsNetball (R15 million to the localeconomy) at the Ugu Sports andLeisure Centre and Africa Expedi-tion 500 at Port Edward.

Inaddition,wesupportagricul-tural shows (Ingeli Show- Hard-ing), cultural events (maidens’ceremony and Nselezi HeritageFestival) to our hinterland, fishingcompetitions up and down thecoast, inland swims - I could go onand on. The purpose of this sup-port is to add to our comprehen-sive events calendar both in andout of season.

I have no fear of contradictionwhen I say that besides Durban(with mega budgets), there is noother district destination area inKZN that has a higher volume ofevent presentation and financialsupport than that of the greaterSouth Coast. To top it all, our adspend, me-dia campaigns and promotionshave never been higher and we willcontinue to promote our destina-tion to mainly our South Africanmarkets. Our publicity actions (i.e.free exposure on the web, printand TV/radio has already exceed-ed annual targets- and we stillhave four months to go) and wewill continue with this trend.

A new and target orientatedstrategy has been introduced by

our organisation and in whichthere are some 106 actions wehave to reach within specific per-formance criteria. This is a mightytask which we have gladly takenon – with little sleep in the process.

Our team of practitioners hasrisen to the challenge and to datethe feedback we have had fromour tourism members and col-leagues is that this sustained en-ergy is greatly valued.

So if anybody wonders if tour-ism is nodding off, please comeand visit us we will be happy toshare our projects and pro-grammes with you.

We have 10 area committeesalong the coast and inland andthey too are fully cognisant of ourcollective drive towards tourismgrowth. This is public-private sec-tor collaboration in action.

Oh, I forgot to mention, thereis also an event coming to town itis called Africa Bike Week (ABW),which according to research con-ducted by the University of North-West (2013) has a direct-indirectand induced value of some R110million while those jolly bikers arehere. But before then and by now,Norm will appreciate that ourtourism does not jolt into actionjust for ABW. Have a brilliant andstimulating week in paradise - bythe time this goes to print, we willbe promoting for three days at theCape Getaway Show - no rest forthe wicked, as they say.

In a bid to promote voting, the ANCYouthLeague organised a soccer tour-nament.

The branch executive committee ofthe ANCYL were pleased with the

turnout on7and8March,where eightteams participated at the Thokothesports grounds.

Starting the day off with a matchagainst Nkanpini United, Swallowsemerged victorious and won thetrophy. Second place team NkampiniCeltics put up stiff competition forSwallowstoclaimsecondoverallrank-ing.

Branch secretary MbalenhleSheme said in an interview that every-

one enjoyed the day and saw it as asuccess.

The ANCYL took the opportunity topromote voting to receptive players.

“It is imperative thatweseedemoc-racyflourish,”saidoneofthespeakers.

Players commented that they couldsee merit in voting, although theirvotes would need to be earned.

THECapeArgushasbecomeinternationally known asthe world’s best timed cy-

cling race. It comprises mostlyflat course with two well-knowninclines — Chapman’s Peak andSuikerbossie.Thisyear’sracebe-gan at Hertzog Boulevard at theCape TownCivic Centre and end-ed at the Cape Town Stadium atGreen Point, totaling 109 kms.The race took cyclists throughFalse Bay and Simon’s Town,across the peninsula and thennorth, along the coast to the fin-ish.

Out of some5881 female com-petitors,CheriseStanderfinishedfirst. Stander won the woman’sevent in a time of 2:51:00, finish-

ingwell ahead of Anriette Schoe-maninsecondandCheJoubert inthird. Despite going through thepain and loss of her husband andher grandmother, Stander push-ed herself to win.

“I kept on thinking howmuchthey would want me to cross thefinish line in first place. That iswhat kept me going,” she says.

Emerging victorious she dedi-cated her victory to her grand-mother, a driving force behindher success as a cyclist. Standerchosenottolingerontheimpend-ing court case involving the acci-dent that claimed her husband’slife. Instead she chose to cele-brate what was in essence hisfondest pastime.

Cycling for Team RECM,Stander focused on her trainingover the past year.

After her achievement in theArgus, Stander and RECM team-mate Theo Blignaut announcedthat they intend to take part intheAbsa CapeEpic from23 to 30March.According toStander, sheand her partner are really busyand aren’t able to train togetheras often as they would like, butwhentheopportunitypresents it-self they take it.

Stander has already complet-ed one Cape Epic and team-mateBlignaut, a first timer to the Epic,will be relying on her experiencein the race.

“Communication with yourpartner, pacing yourself and eat-inganddrinkingare themost im-portant ingredients to complet-ing the Absa Cape Epic success-fully. We train about three timesaweek,ifpossible,”saysBlignaut.
