First Month
• By the end of the first month, the embryo is about 1/10 of an inch long (about the size of a red hot candy) . The heart, which is no larger than a poppy seed, has begun beating at 18 days.
First Month
Two Months
• The embryo is about 1 inch long (about a large jelly bean) and has distinct, slightly webbed fingers.
• Veins are clearly visible. • The heart has divided into
right and left chambers.• All body systems are formed• Face and neck begin to take
human form• Head grows rapidly – ½ of
the embryo’s size
Two Months
Three Months
• By now the fetus is 2 1/2 to 3 inches long (lipstick tube or man’s thumb) and is fully formed.
• He has begun swallowing and kicking.
• All organs and muscles have formed and are beginning to function.
• Weighs ½ ounce
Four Months
• The fetus is covered with a layer of downy hair called lanugo – to help regulate the fetus’ temperature. The heartbeat can be heard clearly with a stethoscope. Mother may feel baby's first kick. – quickening
• 6 inches, 4 ounces
4 months
Five Months
• A protective white
coating called vernix caseosa begins to form on baby's skin. By the end of this month, baby will be nearly 8 inches long and weigh almost 12 oz.
• Sex organs are recognizable.
Six Months
• Eyebrows and eyelids are visible. Lungs are filled with amniotic fluid, and has started breathing motions. If you talk or sing, he can hear you.
• 1 ½ – 2 lbs 12 in.
6 Months
Seven Months
• By the end of the seventh month, your baby weighs about 3 1/2 pounds and is about 15 inches long. His body is well-formed. Age of viability – can survive if born early
Eight Months
• Fetus is gaining about half a pound per week, and layers of fat are piling on. probably turned head-down in preparation for birth. – Birth position .
• He weighs between 4 and 6 pounds. 16 ½ inches in length
Nine Months
• Fetus is a hefty 7 to 9 pounds and measures between 19 and 22 inches at birth. As he becomes more crowded, you may feel him move around less. Gets antibodies from mother before birth.
• Heartbeat is very rapid
