Come and begin The Great Fast (Lent) in the true

Christian spirit of forgiveness, with our beautiful Ves-

pers Evening Prayer Service composed especially for

the evening before the first day of The Great Fast.

We, the Clergy and Laity of the North Anthracite

Ukrainian Catholic Protopresbytery (Deanery) will

gather at 4 p.m. in Plymouth on Feb. 22 to pray to-

gether in unity, as we prepare to journey with our Lord Jesus through the 40-day

Great Fast, in preparation for Holy Week and Pascha.

FATHER JOHN SENIW, our Protopresbyter (Dean), will be the Main Celebrant,

with FATHER PAUL WOLENSKY leading the sung responses. All our parishion-

ers from all our parishes are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate.

Clergy who wish to concelebrate are asked to bring their own dark vestments.

Altar Servers are welcome—please bring your own black cassock and red or

purple dalmatic. At the end of the service, there will be a

ceremony of mutual forgiveness between everyone pre-

sent. Afterwards, everyone is invited to the parish hall

for fellowship and a covered-dish meal in Saints Peter &

Paul Parish Hall. All parishes are asked to help with

preparation and sponsorship of the covered-dish meal.

ANN BESHADA is coordinating the covered-dish meal —

please call her at 829-4202 if you will be bringing food.

Mark your calendar—we hope to see you there!

“From God’s fullness we have all received …grace upon grace.”

(John 1:16)

This day will explore loss in its various dimensions. To some degree, some greater than others, we have all experienced loss in our lives - death of a loved one, failing health, loss of a job, ending of a relationship. This list goes on and on and is very personalized. The pain is very real. Loss shapes our lives and self-understanding if we allow it. This day will explore how to make sense of loss, grief and sadness and how to work through it. Loss shapes our lives and self-understanding and can lead to a defining experience where we can overcome the feelings of emptiness and work toward wholeness.

“I was hungry andyou fed me, thirstyand you gave medrink…” Matthew25:35; was themessage of theGospel read byRev. John Ciurpita,Pastor of HolyGhost Parish toc o m m e m o r a t ethose who lost theirlives to hunger in theFamine in Ukrainefrom 1932-1933.

After a reflection onthe message of ourLord, as it pertainedto the daysremembrance, thelights were dimmed and the congregation began to sang, Bozhe, Vyslukhai Blahannia. A cross bearer leda procession into the Church followed by religious banners and flags. Silence set in as a lone bell began totoll seventy-five times to signify that after seventy-five years we have not forgotten those who passed in theGenocide.

To the left of the iconostas, hung on an easel, stood a wood cut print of a mother and child representing thosewho died in the famine with a black ribbon draped over it and a bare vine wreath with a black bow hungfrom the side. A memorial table was set up in front of the picture and wreath, upon which was placed threeloaves of bread in which a candle was placed, representing the deceased. Children of the parish, dressedin Ukrainian garb, slowly walked one by one up the aisle, carrying a single shaft of wheat wrapped with ablack ribbon to show that something so small would have made a difference. The wheat was then placed ina vase set up on the memorial table. The children were then followed by members of Soyuz Ukrainok Branch13 carrying candles, representing the light of those who died. The candles were then placed in a bowl of ricesymbolizing that such a basic food would have saved lives. As the bell tolled the last rings, Fr. John then litthe candle in the bread and blessed the Kolyvo, (boiled wheat with nuts and fruit), which had been preparedand placed on the memorial table in memory of those who died and prayed that they may partake of all thegood things in the eternal banquet of heaven. Following the blessing the procession began to leave downthe aisle of the Church, as the lights were slowly raised and the congregation sang, Bozhe Velykyi Yedinyi.

Many were moved to tears at the remembrance of the Famine. Following the Divine Liturgy Fr. John thankedand acknowledged Christine Pluta, Christine Matikiw and Judy Steciw, who prepared and organizedthe day’s remembrance of the Famine. All were invited to the Church Social Hall to view a display on theFamine and to partake of the blessed Kolyvo and bread, remembering in such a simple way, those who diedin the Famine of 1932-33.

GREAT AND HOLY WEEK

Jn. 12:1-18

EASTER BRIGHT WEEK

1 2February 1, 2009

Encounter of Our Lord in the TempleWhen the time of theirpurification according to theLaw of Moses had beencompleted, Joseph andMary took him to Jerusalemto present him to the Lord(as it is written in the Lawof the Lord, “Every firstbornmale is to be consecratedto the Lord”), and to offera sacrifice in keeping withwhat is said in the Law ofthe Lord: “a pair of dovesor two young pigeons.” Nowthere was a man inJerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous anddevout. He was waiting forthe consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit wasupon him. It had been

revealed to him by the HolySpirit that he would not diebefore he had seen theLord’s Christ. Moved by theSpirit, he went into thetemple courts. When theparents brought in the childJesus to do for him whatthe custom of the Lawrequired, Simeon took himin his arms and praisedGod, saying:”SovereignLord, as you havepromised, you now dismissyour servant in peace. Formy eyes have seen yoursalvation, which you haveprepared in the sight of allpeople, a l ight forrevelation to the Gentilesand for glory to your

people Israel.” The child’sfather and mother marveledat what was said about him. Then Simeon blessed themand said to Mary, hismother: “This chi ld isdestined to cause thefalling and rising of manyin Israel, and to be a signthat will be spoken against,so that the thoughts ofmany hearts wi l l berevealed. And a sword willpierce your own soul too.”There was also aprophetess, Anna, thedaughter of Phanuel, of thetribe of Asher. She wasvery old; she had lived withher husband seven yearsafter her marriage, and

then was a widow until shewas eighty-four. She neverlef t the temple butworshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Comingup to them at that verymoment, she gave thanksto God and spoke aboutthe child to all who werelooking forward to theredemption of Jerusalem. When Joseph and Maryhad done everythingrequired by the Law of theLord, they returned toGalilee to their own townof Nazareth. And the childgrew and became strong;he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God wasupon him. (Lk. 2, 22-40)

This year, Monday, February 23rd is the beginning of the Great Fast in the Byzantine Tradition asopposed to Lent beginning on Ash Wednesday on February 25th in the Latin Tradition.

The chart (on page 12 of "The Way") lists the Sundays of Preparation for this time as we prepare forthis solemn time of prayer, fasting and charity. This year, the Sunday of Zacchaeus was celebrated lastSunday, January 25th. The 1st All Souls Saturday is celebrated on February 14th, the day beforeMeatfare Sunday or the Sunday of the Last Judgment. The Wednesday (February 18th) and Friday(February 20th) before the great Fast are aliturgical days and the Divine Liturgy is not celebrated eitherday. Cheesefare Sunday (February 22nd) starts off the Great Fast in the evening with the celebration ofForgiveness Vespers. It is during this service where everyone in attendance forgives others and asks forforgiveness.

As is our custom and church law, Monday of the first day of the Great Fast is a day of fast andabstinence from meat and dairy products. The weekdays of the Great Fast are aliturgical whereas theDivine Liturgy is not celebrated. To break the fast, Wednesdays and Fridays are days when the Liturgyof the Presanctified Gifts is celebrated. The chart gives the readings for the day. A reading from thebook of Isaiah is read in the morning and readings from Genesis and Proverbs are read in the evening. It is during this time, salvation history is reviewed as we await the completion of salvation through ourLord, Jesus Christ. Also, Wednesdays during the Great Fast may be days of voluntary fasting from meatand Fridays are obligatory days of fasting from meat.

Saturdays and Sundays of the great Fast are liturgical days. On Saturday, the Liturgy of St. JohnChrysostom is celebrated and on Sunday, the Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is celebrated. Lenten Vespersare celebrated on Sunday evenings.

The second, third and fourth Saturdays of the Great Fast are All Souls Saturdays and we continue tocommemorate the deceased from our parishes and families. Wednesday, March 18th is the Mid -GreatFast. This year since the Feast of the Annunciation falls on Wednesday, March 25th, the Canon of St.Andrew of Crete is celebrated on Tuesday, March 24th. This penitential service is a reminder of ourstatus before the Lord.

Saturday, March 28th is Akafist Saturday where we commemorate the Mother of God and her role insalvation history. The Great Fast ends with Lazarus Saturday on April 4th. It contains the longest readingfrom the Gospels during a Liturgy but also prefigures what our Lord will do for each and every oneof us.

Holy and Great Week, if taken seriously, will enable the faithful to fully live the Gospel and be with Lordas He undergoes His passion and resurrection. From the time of Lazarus Saturday until Easter Sunday, our Tradition recounts the life of Jesus Christ and we are His witnesses. It is customary but not obligatoryfor the faithful to fast from meat during this week. On Good Friday, we are obligated to fast andabstain from meat and dairy products and on Holy Saturday we are obliged to fast from meat.

Our Church offers us a unique manner to live a life in relationship with Jesus Christ. This time of theyear is especially set aside for us to renew that relationship and deepen it. Some, if not all, may notbe able to find the time to participate fully in the services offered. If we even attempt to do the readingsduring this time, we will come to understand what God has in store for us.

Meeting of Our LordThe final feast in theChristmas cycle brings usback to the days after theNativity of Christ, whenJesus was 40 days old. This feast, the Meeting ofOur Lord, is celebrated 40days after the feast of theNativity. According to theByzantine Liturgical cycle, this holy day represents atransitional feast wherebythe two great festivemoods of Christmas andEaster are symbolicallyunited.

After the birth of Jesus, theMost Pure Virgin Maryand Saint Joseph had topresent the Christ Child inthe temple at Jerusalemand consecrate Him to theprescriptions of the MosaicLaw: “Every male child thatopens the womb shall becalled holy to the Lord”(Lk 2:33).

There was at Jerusalem atthat time a righteous anddevout man namedSimeon, to whom it hadbeen revealed by the HolySpirit that he would notdie before he had seenChrist , the promisedSavior. A certainprophetess named Anna, who never left the templebut continually fasted andprayed, also awaited thecoming of the Messiah.

When the Holy Familyarrived at the Temple, theywere going to offer up insacrifice the oblation of thepoor, which consisted of

a pair of turtle doves ortwo young pigeons, aswas prescribed by the Lawof Moses. Holy Simeonwho was inspired by theHoly Spirit to come to thetemple, took the ChildJesus into his hands andblessed God for permittinghim to live to that momentto see the Savior. Annaalso came and praised theLord and began toprophesy about the Child.

With this feast the Churchclosed all connections withthe childhood of Christduring whichcommemorations weremade of His nativity, thecoming of the Magi andHis circumcision. WhenSimeon confessed the Lordand delivered the inspiredmessage to Mary, heforetold: “Behold this childis destined for the fall andfor the rise of many inIsrael, and for a sign thatshall be contradicted. Andyour own soul a swordshall pierce, that thethoughts of many heartsmay be revealed” (Lk 2:34-35).

Both Simeon and Anna inprophesying of whatwould happen to the ChildJesus in the future alreadydirects attention to thesufferings and passion ofChrist and His culminatingDeath and Resurrection. This is commemorated inthe feast of feasts — Easter— signifying ourredemption from sin. Thus,

it is readily seen how thisfeast connects theconcluding elements of ourLord’s nativity with thefuture incidents of His life.

It was on this occasion ofJesus’ consecration to theFather in the temple thatthe Most Holy Mother ofGod rejoiced at thewonderful things spoken bySimeon and Annaconcerning the Child. However, she was awareof the grief and hardshipsthat were destined tobefall Jesus as He fulfilledthe mission for which Hewas born.

From the beginningsof this feast, we see thatour Lord came as a sonto His own people. Therefore, He respected

the religious traditions ofthe times, fulfilling therequirements of the Law.We, too, continue thispractice when we bringour newborn child to thechurch for the rite of“Churching”, or Baptism aswe call it.

Why do you have yourchild baptized? Is it notbecause you want him/herto share the new life ofChrist and the new life ofthe Christian community? The Christian community ismore than just anorganization. Saint Paulteaches us that the Churchis the body of Christ. Sowhen we become amember of the church webecome a member andpart of the Body of Christ.

PRESENTER:

Rev. John Ciurpita is currently the Pastor of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic

Church in Chester, PA and also serves the community of Saints Peter and Paul

Church in Clifton Heights, PA.

He is the Chair of the Liturgical Commission of the Archeparchy of

Philadelphia and has worked in the fields of Ecumenism and Interreligious

Dialogue. Father John has done retreat work, workshops and days of reflection,

centering on the season of the Great Fast and preparing for the feast of the

Resurrection.

TOPIC:

“LETTING GO OF THE ANGER AND LEARNING TO FORGIVE”

The fact that after a gun man entered an Amish school house and killed

five children then himself; and then within hours the Amish community

was able to go to the gun man’s home and forgive him and offer

support to his family was amazing.

In this Lenten afternoon of reflection, we will actively look at our own

individual ability to become a forgiving person and heal the anger in our

life. We begin this process by first looking at our own experience of

God’s love and forgiveness in our life. Next we will reflect on our

own experiences of forgiving and having been forgiven, and

how we can become an even more forgiving person.
