Welcom e to the Smit hsonian Institu tion's thirdFestival of Amtriu n Fclklife. We are gratified thatp ublic response to th is yurly presentation of ourtudition ,11culture has been so extensive andem husiastie, I believe this response is indicative o f,1 deep inte rest sha red by an Amrriuns in theirseparate and collect ive cuhu ral berjta ge. In the finalconcert o f last vear's Fest ival. Ab n Lomaxcommented that th is was the Festival of the CommonM ,1 n where people brought the art that they hadmade up out of their ow n experience. It is our hopethat th is Festival w ill conti nue in this vein, thusproviding pa rti cipants and visitors ali ke withincreased understandi ng of our national cha racter.

In 19 68 the Smithsonian asked several outstandin gscho lars to contribute their definitions of folkloreto our prog ram book . These definit ions emphasizedtha t folk lore was a h ighly diversified accum ulat iono f lo re. wisdom , and art wh ich has been passed onfrom one generat ion to another. of ten wi thoutformal instruction. Folklo re was also described asthe hidden submerged cult ure lying in the shado w ofthe offic ial civilizat ion about wh ich histo rians write.

For man y vears. the main for ce o f govern ment, science and scholarshi p has been rightly direc tedto ward the develo pment o f ethnic, social andpolit ical instit utions designed to Inter-relate all of itspeople regardless o f their individual cult ural

rradirions. T his direction of o ur national Iife led tothe referral in popular teems of the U nited Sraresas "the great melting po t" ,

T od J. y we are mort tban evtr aware that there arem.ll ny submerged cult ures wh ich lie in the shadow o four official civiliza tion and that these culturesrepresent .lI rich dive rsity wh ich provide this nationwith .In ext raordin ary htrit .ll ge. We are coming tounderstand rbar while we as .lI people commonly share.lI national cult ure, each American also enjoys thedistinct ive ways of his fam ily, ethn ic group. regionand occupat ion wh ich comprise his trad itional or folkcult ure and that thi s more personal cult ure is of viralimporta nce to the social, moral and aesthe tic fabri cof our nation al life.

If this 19 69 Festival of American Fclkl ife is able togive our visitors a small glimpse of our culturaldiversity and increase the ir awareness of the vigoro f our aesthetic tr ad itions, we will have accomplishedour goal in some small degree.
