At School & Home
Self-regulation is defined as the best state of alertness of both the body and emotions for specific situations. The Zones of
Regulation program helps students learn and practice self-regulation strategies. The lessons and learning activities are de-
signed to help the students recognize when they are in the different zones as well as learn how to use strategies to change
or stay in the zone they are in. In addition to addressing self-regulation, the students gain an increased vocabulary of emo-
tional terms, skills in reading other people’s facial expressions, perspective about how others see and react to their behav-
ior, insight into events that trigger their behavior, calming and alerting strategies, and problem solving skills.
The ZONES of Regulation®
Describes low states of alertness and down feelings. When one’s body and/or brain is moving
slowly or sluggishly. Example: sad, tired, sick, bored
Stay tuned for upcoming strategies to help chil-
dren learn self-regulation skills!
Strategies for Self Regulation at
School
• Think happy thoughts
• Talk about your feelings
• Rub hands together
• Dynamic seating
• Take a walk/run on spot
• Get a drink of water
• Swinging or spinning
• Stretching or jumping jacks
• Drink water
Strategies for Self Regulation at
Home
• Listen to loud music
• Talk about your feelings
• Exercise
• Shoulder rub
• Ask for a hug
• Smell strong scents
• Play with a friend
• Read a book
• Play with family pets
Example: Sitting at the table
doing homework but head is
down and looks and/or com-
plaints of feeling tired/bored.
Strategies for self regulation:
Target for self regulation is to
alert the body and brain into
a zone that matches the de-
sired task and zone. i.e. blue
to green zone.
Strategies to trial:
• Chew gum
• Stand at table to work
• Get up and move, i.e.
get a drink of water
• Listen to music
Does my picky eater need a vitamin pill?
If you have a picky eater, you may have wondered, “Are they getting all the nutrients they need?”
Keep in mind these pointers as you evaluate your child’s diet:
o Our bodies are able to get the nutrients they needfrom a wide variety of diets. If your child is eatingfoods from most of the food groups, they areprobably getting what they need (see sidebar).Food is the best source of nutrients, because theyare in the right amount and right combination forour bodies to use.
o Children require small amounts of food to meettheir nutrient needs. One egg and a few bites ofchicken will take care of your four-year-old’sprotein needs for a day.
o The only supplements most kids need are vitamin D(during the winter), omega-3 (if they don’t eat fattyfish) and vitamin B12 (if they are vegan orvegetarian).
If you are still unsure whether your child is getting the nutrients they need, schedule an appointment with one of our Southern Health-Santé Sud Registered Dietitians. We will be glad to discuss your concerns with you.
Disclaimer: Some recipes or food suggestions may not be suitable for people with allergies. Please check with your local school to identify foods that are acceptable or unacceptable in the classroom.
Three questions to ask yourself before giving your child a vitamin:
1. Does my child eat fruit orvegetables?
2. Does my child eat whole grainor fortified grain products?
3. Does my child eat proteinfoods (nuts, seeds, lentils, beans, eggs, meat, or dairyproducts)?
NUTRITION BITS AND BITES Vitamin pills for kids?
Younger children: can help decide on ingredients, measure, put into blender and push buttons Older kids and teens: can make on their own if they know how to safely operate blender and use knives safely.
See these for ideas at Unlockfood.ca:Vitamins and MineralsCooking with Kids
