Peter Barnes of Business Administration Apprentice, Liam Petitjean. Barnes Bookkeeping Services Ltd in Ferryhill attended the four month course and as well as learning new sales techniques came away with additional help in the form of Liam Petitjean 17, from Kirk Merrington. Liam decided to change his career path when he realised he wasn’t really enjoying studying for A Levels and a family member advised him to consider a Business Administration Apprenticeship. Liam is very pleased he chose the Apprenticeship route. He said, “Working and studying is very different from school but I am able to put my business studies skills into practice here. At present I am studying for an NVQ 2, I work for 4 days a week and study at the College’s Skills & Employment Centre 1 day a week. I hope to go on and study for an NVQ3 in Business Administration and after that I will look at my options. Mr Barnes is very nice to work for plus I am getting experience, a qualification and pay.” Peter said, “I heard about the government initiative to get more young people into apprenticeships when I took part in the sales course. I think it is an ideal way to get youngsters into jobs. Liam is really good; the computer skills he learned at school and continues to build on are a great asset to my business. I can use the computer but Liam’s IT skills are quicker than mine as it comes naturally to him. I am very pleased I went on that sales course as I have learned so much and I am delighted I have been able to offer Liam a job. I am now considering moving to new premises to help us offer an even better service to our clients.” John Jenkins from Bishop Auckland College said, “I’m absolutely thrilled that we have been able to help Peter and Liam. The sales course and taking on an apprentice has given Peter the confidence to build on his sales strategies and think more out of the box to really drive his business forward.” With the onset of the warmer weather, local police are reminding Chapter readers about the importance of home security. - Before leaving your home make sure you have locked both your front and back doors and your windows. Although this sounds simple, almost a third of properties are burgled due to an insecure door or window. As the evenings get warmer, it is easy to leave a window ajar and forget to close it. - If you have a house alarm - please use it. - If you notice anything suspicious in your area contact your Neighbourhood Police Team. - Remember to keep vehicle and house keys out of view. A significant amount of vehicle crime is committed when car keys are stolen during burglaries. Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under a door mat - a thief will look there first. 160 YEARS IN FERRYHILL

Abbie Mae Tindale, Megan Davies-King and Corey Wilson with Mayor Eileen Martin.

On Friday, April 9th, there was a hunt for Easter chicks in Ferryhill market, with children searching for them on each stall. The three winners of the competition were Abbie Mae Tindale, Megan Davies-King and Corey Wilson, who all won a certificate and £10.A presentation took place for the Mayor of Ferryhill,

Eileen Martin to present the youngsters with their awards and have her photo taken with them.Councillor Zena Roddam, who organised the event, said, “It was nice to see the Town Council working in partnership with the market traders and lovely to see people enjoying the market in the good weather”.

YOUNGSTERS ENJOY EASTER EGG HUNT

IN THE SUN The Crown Prosecutor at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court expressed the progression of matters in the case of Christopher David Parker to be “highly unsatisfactory”, as his hearing was again adjourned by magistrates. The defendant, currently residing at Raby Terrace, Chilton, was appearing for the third time to answer a charge of common assault

on his partner Nicola Hodgson. The assault is alleged to have taken place in Ferryhill on March 10th, since when Nicola Hodgson has received a police caution for perverting the course of justice, relating to details provided in her statement to police. A retraction statement had not been forthcoming and the Prosecution had also expected to receive a report from a Domestic Violence

Officer, who should have visited the alleged victim but neither had materialised. Matters were again adjourned and 33 year-old Parker will return before magistrates on April 22nd. In the meantime, bail conditions continue, which means that Parker must not contact Nicola Hodgson, nor go within 100 metres of her, nor must he enter Kitchener Terrace in Ferryhill.

DELAY IS“HIGHLY UNSATISFACTORY”

The Co-op Supermarket in Ferryhill recently organised an Easter Raffle for the Mayor of Ferryhill, Councillor Eileen Martin’s chosen charities. Raffle tickets were sold in the Co-op by the staff and the brilliant amount of £215 was raised, which will be donated to the The Great North Air Ambulance and the Ferryhill 2000 Committee. The winning ticket was

drawn on Good Friday in the Co-op and the winner of the Hamper was Mr Graham Ambler of Ferryhill. A list of the other winning tickets is on display in the Co-op for those who bought tickets.

The Mayor, Councillor Eileen Martin was extremely grateful to the Co-op and its staff and especially Mr Neil Murrell, Deputy Manager for their support as well as everyone who supported the raffle by buying tickets.

30 years experience

Dear Editor,I read with interest the letters in last week's Chapter in reply to my previous correspondence (issue No 465).If I've ruffled local politician's feathers, I'm afraid that's just too bad (nothing personal). It was never my intention to call into question people's integrity but I have to ask, why were they not more vociferous during the prelude to war. In stark contrast, however, I'm genuinely, deeply saddened to learn that the Ferryhill Help For Heroes charity are upset with me regarding my previous comments. My sole objective was to discredit current UK govt foreign policy in Afghanistan and bring to readers' attention the plight of our servicemen, a great many of whom are

from this area. My reference to "charity", being merely to draw attention to the fact that our boys are having to rely too much on public kindness, the govt's own contribution being so low.I have already contacted Mr Tommy Garrett of the Ferryhill HFH group to clarify my position and apologise unreservedly for any hurt caused in this unfortunate misunderstanding. I have offered to meet members in person to try and eliviate dishonour. Like the Poppy Appeal, Help For Heroes is now a totally indispensible part of the support network for Britain's armed service personnel, past and present.

Yours sincerely,Andrew S. Fowler,

Bridge House EstateFerryhill.

Dear Editor,In their recent letters to the Chapter both Andrew Fowler and Alan Holmes accuse 'local politicians' of jumping on the band wagon by giving their support to the Help for Heroes charity. This disgraceful generalisation is one which I can not leave unchallenged. It is a sad fact of life that within the UK there are a wide range of organisations and activities which could not exist were it not for charitable donations. As an island nation it is, I believe, disgraceful that the Life Boat service has to rely on charity. The same is also true of the Air Ambulance and Saint Johns Ambulance services. Look at the work

of the Red Cross which is all funded by donations. There is also the annual Poppy Day appeal for Remembrance Sunday.Let me inform both Andrew and Alan that I was a serving soldier long before I became a local politician. I also completed both the very physically demanding Lyke Wake and Coast to Coast walks to raise funds for local causes long before I became a local politician.Hell, I am sure, will freeze over before any Central Government arrives at the decision to fully finance the assistance that our injured serving soldiers require. In these circumstances I will not walk away from my

responsibility to help those young men and women who need assistance now. Finally for those who are aware of Andrew Fowlers links with the BNP will also be aware of the BNP tactic of seeking, by whatever means possible, to damage the integrity of both national and local politicians. This tactic, they believe, will win the BNP support at the ballot box. It should be noted that Hitler first achieved power by way of the ballot box. The rest, as they say, is history. My fund raising activities on behalf of Help for Heroes will continue.

Yours sincerely, Councillor Brian Gibson.

Dear Editor,The Ferryhill Six want to thank everyone who supported their last lot of fundraising which resulted in £650 being given to The British Legion. Special thanks go to Harry Whitehead, Len German, Bernie Lamb, Joan Leighton, Sadie Rutter, Hilda Vaulks,

Susan Wayman, Billy Dawson and Steve Kent for their help and donations. We are now raising funds for the Mara Unit at Bishop Auckland Hospital and will be on Ferryhill Market on Friday, 23rd April, with lots of goodies and bargains. Hope to see you there.

Councillor Zena Roddam.

Dear Editor,The military exploits and charitable experiences of Mayor Potts and his good lady may be of interest to some. However, this outspoken attack upon some unnamed person contains an obvious contradiction. To quote verbatim from his letter, “I saw this as an

opportunity to promote the cause of Help for Heroes.”However, in the last paragraph he goes on to say, “To accuse me of aligning myself with this charity is despicable.”Come, come Mr Mayor, disgusted you may be, but you cannot get away with that!

Alan S Holmes,Rutherford Terrace,

Ferryhill.

BOUNCING BACK IN STYLEAfter the disappointment of losing out in the League Cup semi-final last weekend at Wynyard Village, Ferryhill Town Youth have certainly bounced back in style with three wins on the trot, and without conceding a goal.Ferryhill Under 10's, sponsored by Kwik Cabs, had no time to let their cup defeat last weekend get them down with three leagues games in a week to make up for all the cancelled games during the bad weather. And what a week it has been with two wins against Billingham and a victory against Darlington TSC.The boys had a fabulous 3 - 0 win against a big Billingham side. After the early exchanges looked fairly even, Ferryhill's flowing football soon started slicing open the opposition defence. A deserved lead was taken when Joe Richardson (who had a great all round game) reacted

quickly to nod home the opening goal after the keeper had parried out Jake Petitjean's fierce free kick. Many clear chances were created with the post being struck as the pressure was piled on.The second half saw more great play as Billingham pressed for an equaliser and left space at the back for Ferryhill's fleet-footed stars to show their skills. Alex Hardy slotted home the second after a defensive error saw him coolly slide the ball under the keeper. The best was yet to come with a fantastic goal that wouldn't have looked out of place at the Stadium of Light. Keeper Pepe collected the ball and launched a kick up the field, Alex, in one movement trapped and laid off the ball for an invitation that Jake couldn't turn down. Without hesitation or breaking stride, Jake let fly from near the half way line with a low screamer of a shot that found

the very corner of the goal - my contender for goal of the season.A fabulous performance by all the team - Pepe, Callum, Sam, Nile, Jake, Joe and Alex. The second game was Ferryhill's first 11 a side game in preparation for next year. The boys went down 2 - 1 but showed a lot of promise. Ferryhill's goal being a lob over the keeper from Ryan Muncaster.Ferryhill Town Youth Under 12's, sponsored by Kelly’s News, were away to Primrose Hill and got off to a great start with goals from Connor Pearson and Jack Blackett before Primrose scored to make it 2 - 1. In the second half, Connor Pearson scored his second before Primrose scored five goals. Connor Pearson got his hat-trick to make the final score Primrose Hill 6 - Ferryhill 4. Man-of-the-match was awarded to Connor Pearson.

PLANNING APPROVEDA planning application, put forward by Hall Construction Services to

build 28 dwellings at the Ashfield Site on Chilton Lane, Ferryhill Station, has been approved by Ferryhill Town Council.

A Ferryhill teenager has been spared jail after telling a judge that he had turned his life around.Nineteen year-old Dean Wilkinson, of Richmond Close, appeared at Teesside Crown Court recently after racially abusing the shop-keeper at Duncombe Stores

and threatening to burn the building down.He admitted the charge of racially - aggravated harassment, as well as a separate charge of robbery.Due to the fact that Wilkinson had held down a job for the last six months and had committed no further crimes,

Recorder, Felicity Davies, suspended his ten-month jail sentence for a year, although she referred to his racial abuse as ‘reprehensible.’She also ordered that Wilkinson be supervised by the Probation Service for 18 months, and that he undertake 100 hours of unpaid work.
