INTRODUCTION This codex is an attempt to bring the Dark Angels’ army list in line with the new 5th edition Space Marine codex. It is evident that the designers at Games Workshop have taken Codex: Space Marines in a completely different direction from 2007’s Codex: Dark Angels, and, while this was perhaps necessary, it unfortunately leaves Dark Angels players with an obsolete and comparatively underpowered army list. Long-time players of the Dark Angels will remember the oft-derided 3rd edition Codex: Dark Angels. While it was incomplete, poorly thought out, and required a second edition to “fix,” it did offer a few advantages, most importantly that it kept the Dark Angels army in line with the Space Marine list. Since an update along the lines of Codex: Space Marines is what the Dark Angels need most right now, this document will follow the spirit of that 3rd edition list. As such, you will require a copy of both Codex: Space Marines and Codex: Dark Angels to use this list. For the most part, this army list takes the units from Codex: Space Marines that the Dark Angels would use, according to the background established by Games Workshop, and modifies them only slightly to add the Dark Angel flavor. In other instances, some units in Codex: Dark Angels are dissimilar enough from their counterparts in Codex: Space Marines that the versions in the Dark Angels’ army list are used instead. These have often been modified, however, to bring them up in power level or design philosophy with the Space Marines. And finally, in three cases, I have added units myself to the codex that are inexplicably absent from Codex: Dark Angels. These units are the Mortis Dreadnought (which replaces the Space Marines’ Ironclad Dreadnought), Interrogator-Chaplain Asmodai, and Sergeant Naaman. To accord with Games Workshop’s strict copyright regulations, I am unfortunately required to limit access to unit stat lines and point costs. In any case where a unit’s stats or points come from either Codex: Space Marines or Codex: Dark Angels, they have been left off and a note telling the reader to “See the [X] entry in Codex: [Space Marines or Dark Angels]” has been put in its place. WARGEAR AND RULES PSYCHIC POWERS Force Barrier: See the Librarian powers in Codex: Dark Angels. Hellfire: See the Librarian powers in Codex: Dark Angels. Mindworm: See the Mindworm rules in Codex: Dark Angels, except that the ability is Assault 1 rather than Heavy 1. Smite: See the Librarian powers in Codex: Space Marines. Weaken Resolve: In your shooting phase, choose an enemy target within 24” of the Librarian, then take a psychic test. If the Librarian passes his psychic test, the targeted enemy unit’s Leadership is reduced by two for any morale or pinning tests it must take until the end of its next turn. This power counts as a shooting attack. SPECIAL RULES Brilliant Tactician: If Azrael is in the army, your opponent may not “Seize the Initiative” from you. In addition, you may “Seize the Initiative” on a 5+ rather than on a 6 as usual. Chief Librarian: Ezekiel knows all the psychic abilities available to the Dark Angels, and may cast two per turn. Close Combat Master: Naaman is an expert in many forms of hand to hand fighting. Scouts under Naaman's training receive more intensive close combat training than they would find elsewhere, thus upgrading their WS from 3 to 4. This applies only to the unit Naaman is bought for. In addition, Naaman's lightning reflexes give him a 5+ invulnerable save, included in his profile. Deathwing Command: If the Interrogator-Chaplain takes terminator armour, then one Deathwing Terminator Squad may be taken as a Command Squad. It becomes an HQ selection, but does not count against your HQ allowance. One model in the squad may be upgraded to an Apothecary (see point cost in Belial’s entry in Codex: Dark Angels), and one may take a Sacred Standard for 25 points (but not the Deathwing Company Banner). Intractable: Units with the Intractable rule are Stubborn. In addition, if they are joined by an Independent Character with the Fearless special rule, they become Fearless as well. Ravenwing Combat Squads: If any Land Speeders are taken in a Ravenwing Attack Squadron, they automatically form a single unit by themselves, apart from the rest of the bikers. They deploy whenever the rest of the squadron deploys and always enter from the same board edge as the rest of the squadron. However, they are never counted as scoring units and they do not have the “Scouts” special rule (though they will outflank if the rest of the squadron does).

WARGEAR AND RULES If there are at least 6 bikers in the squadron, the bikers and attack bikes in the squadron may decide to split into combat squads as well. The bikers split evenly into two units, and the attack bikes form their own unit. For example, if a unit consists of 8 bikes and 1 attack bike, the 8 bikes could split into 2 units of 4 bikes, and the attack bike would then form its own 1 model unit. Finally, if the bikers in the squadron do not split into combat squads, the attack bikes do not have to; however, attack bikes in a squadron may always elect to form their own unit. So, for example, you could have a unit of 6 bikers and 2 attack bikes, or that unit could split into two units, one with 6 bikes and the other with 2 attack bikes. Ravenwing Command: If the Interrogator-Chaplain takes a bike, then one Ravenwing Attack Squadron may be taken as a Command Squad. It becomes an HQ selection, but does not count against your HQ allowance. One model in the squadron may be upgraded to an Apothecary (see point cost in Sammael’s entry in Codex: Dark Angels), and one may take a Sacred Standard for 25 points (but not the Ravenwing Company Banner). Terrifying: If Asmodai survives to the end of a close combat phase, add one to his combat resolution score for all combats he is involved in. Please Note: In all cases where there is a conflict in the rules between an identically named special rule in Codex: Space Marines and Codex: Dark Angels, the newer rules in Codex: Space Marines take precedence. For example, if you have a Land Raider in your army, refer to Codex: Space Marines for the Power of the Machine Spirit rules rather than Codex: Dark Angels. WARGEAR Blades of Reason: Poison weapon that always wounds on a 4+. In addition, any model that loses one or more wounds from the Blades of Reason, but is not removed from the game, fights at an Initiative of 1 until the end of its next turn. Cannot be used in the same turn as the crozius arcanum or Heavenfall Blade. Heavenfall Blade: A Heavenfall Blade is a power weapon with a strength of 5. It may be combined with a pistol or close combat weapon for an extra attack like other power weapons. Master of the Ravenwing’s Jetbike: Sammael rides the last known example of Imperial jetbike technology. The jetbike is armed with a plasma cannon and the Raven’s Fury, and can fire either one or the other each shooting turn, but not both, per the shooting rules in the rulebook. Raven’s Fury is master-crafted and has the following profile:

WARGEAR AND RULES The Raven Sword: The Raven Sword is a master-crafted Heavenfall Blade. Sword of Silence: The Sword of Silence is a master-crafted Heavenfall Blade. Please Note: In all cases where there is a conflict in the rules and/or point cost between an identically named item of wargear in Codex: Space Marines and Codex: Dark Angels, the newer rules and point costs in Codex: Space Marines take precedence. For example, the members of a Company Veterans squad can take storm shields, but, despite what Codex: Dark Angels says, the storm shields cost 15 points to purchase and grant a 3+ invulnerable save to all kinds of attacks.
