I have had the honour and privilege to serve as the President and Chairman of Ferndown Chamber of Commerce through a major changing period of its existence.

Over the last nine months we have significantly increased our membership and our commitment to our town, but much more importantly than that, we have seen a major change in our direction, which has included leading and seeing a change in our attitude to working with others.

Ferndown is a fantastic place and by working together with, and supporting our Town Council and other community groups, we can benefit our locality. I have been lucky enough to work with and have the support of some great local leaders and can only thank Cllrs Tony Brown, Steve Lugg and our immediate past Mayor Cllr Terry Cordery for their efforts and support to the Chamber in building our town into a viable centre.

Our work has only just begun. Ferndown has great potential; we might not have the history of our immediate neighbours to the east or west but what we are building is a community spirit, that I know with the support of the Ferndown businesses and residents will be second to none.

We have a great town that I, and many others, love. By working together with the passion that we all have, including you - the residents, we will see Ferndown become even more successful.

Enjoy this week, support Ferndown and its businesses, but please see it as a start… the best is yet to come.

Apparently this is not Ferndown’s first ever pram race. Back in the 70s stories have been told of brave Ferndown folk pushing their prams, at pace around the streets, so it seems that it is an event that is in Ferndown folks’ blood.

This modern race was thought of last summer after the success of the town’s Jubilee celebrations on King George V playing fields. The main reasons for holding the event are to encourage the town’s people to get together, have fun and most of all have an enjoyable day in their home town. In addition to this, we want to raise some funds for two Ferndown charities: The King George V playing fields and the John Thornton Foundation.

In December a committee was gathered, made up of local people, organisations and councillors to plan the event. It was decided to include a festival within the town including market stalls, charity stalls and of course entertainment. This festival will start the Saturday before race day with a Strawberry Fair followed by various themed events leading up to Saturday 29th June.

The race will start at the Old Thatch Pub at 1pm and continue along Wimborne Road

to the Pure Drop. Here the teams will have to pit stop then set off again along Wimborne Road, before turning into Victoria Road. The second pit stop will be at the Nightjar pub and then the racers will carry on up the hill before turning into Penny’s Walk. A final pit stop at the Barrington Centre will be required before their final destination which is the White Heather car park and finish line. Teams have been encouraged to wear fancy dress and have to abide by various rules but most of all have some fun!

There are many sponsors and people that need to be thanked and it has been a privilege to be associated with people who volunteer and get stuff done for the benefit of others. I hope this event brings the fun into Ferndown and everyone enjoys themselves.

1. The course shall be via The Old Thatch, The Pure Drop, The Nightjar, The Barrington Centre and The White Heather. Finishing at The White Heather car park. The distance is 2.3 miles. No deviation is permitted. 2. Each team must consist of a minimum of four “pushers or runners” and a baby, who must be human and over the age of 18. The one nominated runner can switch with a team mate at any stage along the course (not the “baby” who must always remain in situ, including at the pit stops and drinking his/her pint). A pint must be a beer or fruit based drink. Teams are encouraged to wear fancy dress. 3. ALL ENTRANTS must be over the age of 18 years at the entry day, 29th June 2013. 4. NO competitor shall deliberately hinder or impede the progress of any other competitor. 5. At the Pubs and for the entire duration / length of the course the person sitting in the pram “baby” must remain in situ and will be disqualified if places are changed. All the team and the “baby” must drink a pint at each Pitt stop. Undue spillage will incur disqualification or time penalty. 6. Pram design: the chassis, will not be restricted except that it must follow the basis of a typical pram design. It must include two fixed axles and FOUR WHEELS. No form of propulsion and or steering (other than pushing) can be built or attached. 7. ENTRIES will be accepted on the DAY of the race up to 11:00hrs (or thereafter at the entry marshal’s discretion). The number of starters may be limited, in the interests of

safety. THE ENTRY FEE is £15 per team member equating to £75 per team. Additional donations are most welcome. Teams are actively encouraged to represent PUBS, CLUBS, GROUPS, societies etc.

8. All PRAMS and ENTRANTS shall be subject to scrutiny.

9. ALL COMPETITORS, ENTRANTS, PARTICIPANTS, enter at their own insurance or risk and NO LIABILITY of any kind is or will be accepted by the organising committee, nor its officials, helpers, assistants or any connections thereof, for any accident, incident, and occurrence or for any liability or damages, of any kind, however arising out of the event, before, during or after. 10. ALL ENTRANTS must confirm on application that they are fit enough to take part and complete a course of at least 3 miles that involves drinking 3 pints of beer, if in any doubt, they should not enter unless they have sought MEDICAL ADVICE from a medical practitioner i.e. a medical doctor. 11. ALL ENTRANTS CONFIRM that they have read, understood and accepted the rules and risks and will comply with any reasonable request of any Police Officer, Race Official/ Marshal, especially in the interests of Safety of themselves, another competitor, any spectator or Official.

12. In accordance with Ferndown Town Council terms of licence for a street collection permit, NO OTHER PARTY may lawfully collect any monies for or on behalf of any cause other than a properly Authorised collector of / on behalf of Ferndown PRAM RACE COMMITTEE the Licence holder. Any monies collected by any entrant participating in the pram race or spectator must be passed to a member of the Pram race committee who will distribute all monies at their discretion to the nominated charities. 13. The Pram Race Committee’s decision in all matters is final.

Please note: Awards will be given for First, second and third place, best dressed team, best pram and most sporting gesture. Additional prizes may be given at the committees discretion. The Prize giving will be held in the Barrington Centre after the race has finished.

PIT STOPPure Drop

The Start: The Old ThatchAt the start, Team Captains will register their teams, collect a team number, collecting bucket and number for each racer. They will then be directed towards the start line, passing en route, the Mayor who will be one of the judges, and the Scrutinisers who will ensure that the ‘pram’ and racers are safe to race. Once they have completed this process, teams entering the Fastest Pram event will start first, with other teams starting behind in groups, in order to stagger the flow of runners through the town. A photographer will also be present to take team photos.

Along the Route:Teams are encouraged to collect as much money as they can in their buckets from spectators along the route. Apart from those chasing the prize for the Fastest Pram, this is not a timed race although teams should ensure that they progress quickly enough to reach the finish as it is a “rolling Road Block” Competitors who have not made it past Wimborne Rd / Victoria Road Traffic Lights by 2pm will be sent straight to the finish and will not be allowed to progress to the Nightjar and Barrington Bar.

Runners are invited to buy a drink (not necessarily alcoholic) at each pub. Participants drinking alcohol are reminded to do so responsibly.

Additional Information: At registration team captains will be given race numbers for runners, baby and pram. In addition to this colour coded tokens will also be presented to teams, for use at each of the pit stops. These tokens can be presented to the marshals and pub staff dispensing the drinks.

The Finish:The finish will be at the White Heather car park and prize-giving will take place at the Barrington Centre after the event.


Indoor stalls and entertainment make the day glorious for all who visit. Shop

and enjoy homemade cakes in John and Joyce Little’s exclusive pop up tea shop. Leisurely shopping at a variety of stalls ensures a perfect treat.

Led by Jacqui Sutton, a lively group of volunteers have been planning the event to include a mega-raffle and entertainment on stage and outside. You will be cheerfully greeted by ‘farmers’ and ‘willing wenches’ hoping to make your trip to the Barrington Centre a happy and delightful experience. Come and say, “Hello!”

This year, the Mayor of Ferndown will be crowning our first Strawberry Prince and Princess - two children from Parley First School. Barrington Centre volunteers have been working with Andrew

Wooton (Parley School’s Literacy Co-ordinator) in enabling the children to produce poems with a strawberry theme and from this rewarding activity, we have chosen our royal guests. Come to our Fayre to find out who our talented winners are.

Entrance to the Fayre is only 50p (free to children under 14). All proceeds from the day go towards helping the Ferndown Community

Association deliver a great service at the Barrington Centre for local residents. Shows, clubs and events that the public regularly enjoy are all supported by raising funds, so that by coming to the Strawberry Fayre and maybe indulging in a scrumptious home made scone, you can be assured that your contribution is helping a much valued Ferndown venue.
