PROBLEM STATEMENT• Child kidnapping is a real issue nowadays. • The threat of having their child kidnapped causes

great concern to parents. • In 2011, 158 AMBER Alerts were issued in the

United States (including Puerto Rico) related to child abductions cases involving 197 children [1].

• Novotech Engineering Solutions (NES) goal is to develop a device by which parents can monitor the location of their children, therefore preventing potential kidnapping cases, or facilitate the task of finding a child that has already been kidnapped.[1] National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), “Analysis of AMBER Alert Casesin 2011”, NCMEC, Alexandria, Virginia, Amber Alert Rep., 2012.

PROJECT SOLUTION AND DELIVERABLES• NES proposes to create Life Connection: The Child Security Alert

Bracelet, a small but powerful bracelet with the following security features:

• Track the location of the child wearing the bracelet

• Provide the child's pulse rate

• Provide the temperature at the wrist for statistical comparison to aid in location changing.

• Unauthorized removal mechanism

• Web-based and Android user interfaces

• Central Database for storing location and sensor data, along with user account information.

MARKET COMPETITION• Products like Amber Alert GPS have been

developed to provide the current location of the child.

• Amber Alert GPS provides: • Locate via Computer or Application•SOS Button• Low Battery Alert• Predator Alert•Monthly Recurring Payments Costs

OBJECTIVES• Design and implement a location tracking system by using

assisted GPS that notifies about the current location of the child even indoors, remote or far away locations.

• Design and implement a communication system by using a GSM network that allows sending data packets containing device data (temperature, pulse and location) to be stored on the database.

• Design and implement a pulse sensor that reads data about the child’s pulse through the application or web interface.

• Design and implement a database system to collect, manage, and share all information about the child’s conditions and location on a specified time span.

• Design and implement a temperature sensor that reads data about the child’s temperature at the wrist through the application or web interface.

• Design and implement an unauthorized alert remove mechanism that sends notifications if the bracelet has been removed through the application or web interface.

OBJECTIVES (CONTINUED)• Design and implement a web user interface that sends

notifications about the status and location of the child as well as the bracelet status on a web application.

• Design and implement an Android application that sends a notification about the status and location of the child as well as the bracelet status on Android based mobile devices.

• Design and implement a battery holder to power up the microcontroller. The battery holder must be a compact, space saving, non-intrusive tray, and can’t interfere with the removal mechanism to ensure bracelet comfort.

• Design and implement a battery level indicator that sends notifications to the application or web interface. An on-board indicator about the battery level and if it needs to be charged will be implemented.

TECHNICAL APPROACH (CONTINUED)• The software system design will be divided in

two levels: the high-level system and low-level system.

MANAGEMENT APPROACH• Regular scheduled and on-call meetings will be held every week.• The completion of each task will be ensured by applying the Divide

and Conquer technique, therefore we divided this project into the following main sections:• Embedded System Specifications,• System Digital Design • System Physical Implementation• System Unit Testing• System Integration and Testing• Final System Delivery

• The Project Manager is responsible for overseeing the progress and status of each of these sections.

• Each section will be divided into 7 modules, and an assessment will be done on each module by determining its completed percentage from the module definition and goal. • When all modules are completed the main section is will be

completed.• Agile software development methodology will be used, focusing on

continuous customer or stakeholder involvement, and close, daily co-operation between developers.

RISK MANAGEMENTRisk Negative Impact Priority Recovery PlanSensor failure (burnt or broken)

High 1 Order extra sensors since beginning for backup.

Microcontroller failure (burnt or broken)

High 1 Order extra microcontrollers since beginning for backup.

Unavailability of client for feedback

Low 3 Focus on other parts of the development until the clients provides feedback.

No access to Capstone lab High 2 Diverge all resources and attention to work that can be done remotely. Contact security guard or professor to get laboratory access.

Missing team members Medium 4 Redistribute missing members’ task among those present.

Project work in progress lost High 1 Create an outside sourced repository from day one for hardware and software coding to prevent data loss.

Excessive use of a resource (team member or digital resource)

Medium 2 Correct managing of resources should prevent exploiting issues.

Unexpected academic break (strikes or bad weather)

Low 4 Direct attention to work that can be done remotely and plan for extra time on campus.

No GSM service High 1 Order extra parts, check for GSM network configuration (frequencies). Change location.

Problem with campus servers Medium 3 Grant repository access to personal computers to allow off-campus servers.

Power issues while testing Low 2 Ensure multiple power sources for continuous testing. If none are available communicate with laboratory assistant.

Priority Rank:1- Very high 2- High 3- Medium 4- Low

• The Life Connection bracelet will likely have social and economic impacts. An expected social impact is a sense of relief on families because this bracelet will allow them to monitor where their children are at any moment, providing a safer community.

• If bugs or system failures occur or hackers break into the communications system they may be able to access the information in order to locate the bracelet and the child. This security issue will be of real concern to parents.

CONCLUSION• At Novotech Engineering Solutions, we want to offer parents a product, by which they can remotely track and monitor the location and well being of their children, more mobile and compact than any other currently in the market. •In the long run, we believe this product could aid law enforcement agencies on kidnapping cases, and greatly improve the chances of finding missing children before it is too late.
