Prayer of Invocation/Confession
Dear God, as we start this holy
season of Lent, we marvel at Your
holy patience with us. We are always
asking for mercy and You hear our
prayers. We worship recognizing our
spiritual weaknesses and we
remember Your forgiving Spirit. We
praise You, and worship You, with
much hope. We lack faith, and we
lack discipleship, and yet You love us.
Therein is our hope. We so easily fail
to be obedient and we lose our way.
Come Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with
fire and power, and hope. We desire
to remain faithful and overcome
temptations during this Lenten
journey. We can go forth, knowing
that God is at our side, blessing us
each moment. Thank You, O God, for
the victory. Amen.
People of God, hear the Lord's call to
worship, serve, pray, share gifts, and
proclaim the Good News.

OFFERTORY PRAYER
Our Heavenly Father, we have been
resurrected by Your power and
released in the Resurrection of Your
Son, Jesus the Christ. Thank You for
our new birth, and new life, and new
goals through Jesus Christ our Lord.
So it is with joy that we give our
tithes, mission gifts and sacrificial
offerings. May what we give make a
difference in us, and in our world, far
beyond anything that we can
imagine. May Your great love shine in
our hearts, for Your glory. Accept our
gifts today. In the name of Jesus.
Amen.
He will always make you rich enough
to be generous at all times, so that
many will thank God for your gifts
which they receive from us."
2 Corinthians 9:11

Lent is a time set aside by the church for self-examination, repentance,
spiritual growth and preparation for Easter. Lent is so hard for us. Our
culture showcases success and God calls us to sacrifice. The world
promotes power and God invites is to deny ourselves. Society encourages us
to "feel good" and God points us to the struggles and burdens of our sisters
and brothers. As we journey with Jesus to Calvary, may we learn to say no
to all that tempts us. Lent is hard. But God's amazing grace brings us hope,
joy and life. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen!

Lenten Journey Page 12
During the Season of Lent, Jesus took forty days in the wilderness for
prayer and meditation. Please set up an altar in your home during
our journey. The following items should be placed on your altar:
The Cross
The Cross reminds us of God’s great love that
was shown on Calvary.
Bowl of Water
The Bowl of Water reminds us of our Baptism. It is also a reminder of
our commitment to God and God’s service.
Bowl of Sand
The Bowl of Sand reminds of our journey through the desert. As we
face our own temptations, remember we are not alone.
A Candle
The Candle reminds us that God is our Light in the
midst of our darkness. Run and light the candle when you feel tempted
to stray.
An Offering Envelope
The Offering Envelope reminds us that we have much to give. There
are others who have less than we do.
Thank God we can give.
The Bible
The Bible reminds us that we need the POWER OF THE WORD on
our Lenten Journey. Pick up the WORD and LIVE!
Psalm 27:4- “One thing I ask of the Lord, that will I seek
after… to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in
His temple.”

A Brief History of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church
In 1924 a few officers and members of Mount Beulah, banded together and organized a
church which they named Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Two ministers worked
together in the organization of the church. This small faithful group of people purchased
a lot at 20470 Wisconsin in Detroit. More people moved into the area, joined Mount
Lebanon Baptist Church and the name was changed to First Baptist Church.
Reverend Smith served as Pastor until 1929. Reverend Theodore Williams served from
1931 until 1935. The church called Reverend Pyles who served about three years and
rebuilt First Baptist. He was unable to finish rebuilding the church because God called
him from labor to reward. Reverend Sandy Gibson, who was the assistant to Reverend
Pyles, carried out his term and was elected for a short period in 1939.
Reverend Charles B. Heath was called as pastor in the spring of 1939. Much was
accomplished under Reverend Heath’s administration. Due to the fact that there were
two churches in Detroit with the same name, Reverend Heath had the church change its
name from First Baptist to New Prospect Baptist Church on January 7, 1945.
In 1953 the church voted to enlarge their present building. The members were
supportive of this effort and contributed considerably. In March 1960, the members
borrowed ten thousand dollars and made the down payment to purchase the 6330
Pembroke building. Reverend Heath pastored the church for twenty eight (28) years
until his death in 1967.
In February 1968, the church called Reverend Dr. S. Leon Whitney from Jackson,
Mississippi. Under his pastoral leadership an addition to the Pembroke Property was
made and the facilities were expanded to its current structure. There was much growth
under Reverend Whitney until his death in December 1990. His son, Reverend Dr. Keith
L. Whitney assumed the pastoral leadership from 1991 until 1996. Reverend Randolph F.
Henlon who was the Assistant Pastor at the time served as Interim Pastor from 1996 until
March 1999.
On March 1, 1999, history was made in Detroit. Reverend Wilma Robena Johnson, a
female assistant pastor at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, was elected Senior Pastor
of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. A new light appeared in the community.
THIS IS THE CHURCH WHERE THE SPIRIT OF UNITY ABIDES.
THIS IS THE CHURCH WHERE THE VISION LIVES AND SHINES!
Congratulations to Pastor and People! We are Celebrating 15 Years Together!
