BACKGROUND:The Amish and Hu/erites are U.S. agricultural popula:ons whose lifestyles are remarkably similar in many respects but whose farming prac:ces, in par:cular, are dis:nct; the former follow tradi:onal farming prac:ces whereas the la/er use industrialized farming prac:ces. The popula:ons also show striking dispari:es in the prevalence of asthma, and li/le is known about the immune responses underlying these dispari:es.

CONCLUSIONS: The results of our studies in humans and mice indicate that the Amish environment provides protecIon against asthma by engaging and shaping the innate immune response.
