Heikki Salmirinne Geophysicist, Geological Survey of Finland

PRE-CONFERENCE SHORT COURSES Place: Hotel Hullu Poro, LeviDates: Monday 2 November 2015 at 15:00 - 18:00 Tuesday 3 November 2015 at 09:00 – 16:00

Short Course registration fee per person is• till 1 September 2015 330 €• from 2 September 2015 430 €

Registration fee includes course programme and materials, lunch on Tuesday and refreshments during breaks.

Participants: Minimum 10, maximum 40 persons.

Details of content:Themes of the Short Course are • Regional geophysical data sets for mineral potential mapping in Finland • Image Processing - A Tool in Visualizing Geophysical Data for Geologists• Geophysical methods and data processing techniques in mineral exploration - is there anything new?”

“What data we should have?” is a basic question in the begin-ning of exploration projects. Airborne geophysics of Finland and regional gravity data together with other geo-information in various scales form the base for mineral exploration. Process-ing and visualization procedures of these data sets are essential parts of data mining and integration when taking a view of min-eral potential. 3-D inversion techniques and new derivatives of potential field data have become an important part of geo-modeling and structural interpretations. The developments in electromagnetic techniques in turn enable effective exploration of deep targets. The course presents the regional geophysical data sets in Finland and aims at understanding processing, visualization and inver-sion procedures by practical case studies.

HYPERSPECTRAL CORE IMAGING: AN EMERGING TECHNOLOGY FOR GEOLOGICAL AND MINING APPLICATIONSLecturers: Dr. Phil Harris Spectral Geologist, Geospectral Imaging (Pty) Ltd

Paul Linton Spectral Geologist, Geospectral Imaging (Pty) Ltd

Details of content: The workshop provides an opportunity to understand how in-frared drill core imaging adds value to geological and mining projects. This will be done through discussions of the technol-ogy, the geological application of infrared spectroscopy, and the generation of information and products from the data. The goal is to provide an understanding of the technology, its application, the generation of information and the knowledge proposition that it offers. The workshop will undertake to de-scribe the value of mineralogical data and textural information that can be obtained from infrared drill core imagery and its rela-tionship to geotechnical and geophysical parameters of the core. An overview of the technology and application will be presented along with the principal geological information that can be ob-tained from the spectral data. Sensor designs and instrumenta-tion will be discussed. Different data capture methods will be evaluated taking into consideration instrument, target and opera-tional characteristics. Processing methods and product types will be discussed. Demonstration data sets will be used to illustrate the mineral-ogical information that can be obtained from the data. Time will be spent detailing the product types and uses generated from the infrared image data. These will allow the attendee to explore the data and under-stand how these data provide knowledge to geological materials. Application examples for different case studies and applications will be demonstrated. Finally, the future development directions and trends will be reviewed to round off the workshop.

Course Requirements:Participants will require their own laptops to explore datasets.

Short Course registration fee per person is• till 1 September 2015 330 €• from 2 September 2015 430 €

Registration fee includes course programme and materials, lunch on Tuesday and refreshments during breaks.
