a guideline to archive harmony landscape which suit to &alaysia culture and

weather. For instance, <uala :umpur consist of %hinese community which gather

from all part of &alaysia. Summary in this particular area will help to recognize

Shui.

#he awareness for Feng Shui in landscape is still very limited yet slow in

'1 2oncept of Feng Shui

Feng Shui originated at least A,444 years ago in the Cestern %hou Eynasty

)**44 * 9.%.- )Gu, *++4-. Feng Shui started with the philosophy of traditional

%hinese technology to perform site selection. #he selected site should be the

suitable locations for dwellers either for living and dead. )(an and Sinha *++-.

#he main purpose to practise Feng Shui is to integrate both nature in conjunction

with the cultural consideration in order to pursue a harmony state of living place.

Feng Shui practise seek for balance between nature and human as well as

relationship within human )(an, 344*-. #his could easily observe that most of the

elements implemented in Feng Shui landscape are mostly relate back to theoutlook and properties of nature. Feng Shui is kind of knowledge which mimic the

beauty of nature in human perspective and ease the living of human at the same

moment.

:ike all others knowledge, Feng Shui evolved to be more precise in every

living corner. /eople inject more others criteria inclusive of ecological, physical,

spatial and temporal consideration toward Feng Shui )Gu, *++H-. #he

development of Feng Shui implements in varies $elds such as spiritual,

psychological, religious and sociological. Chile, the ultimate gold for Feng Shui

still preserve which is to achieve harmonious and balance within interaction of

human, environment and cosmos )(an *++?I 0u *++?I Gu *++H-.

&ost of the time, Feng Shui is related to the manipulation of Ji );nergy-.

Ji is ow with the wind and accumulated by the water )(an, 344*-. #hus, the

terms Feng Shui translated into ;nglish is barely mean wind and water. #he Feng

Shui mastersK judgments are intuitive and somewhat subjective, but two schools

of Feng Shui theory can guide them. =ne is called :uan #ou )mountain peak-,

which is based on analyses of physical phenomena at a site, such as topography,

vegetation, and climate. #he other is :i %hKi )arranging %hKi-, which emphasizes

using a compass ):ou /an- to judge proper site orientation and placement for

settlements according to the residentsK birthdays. 'ncient %hinese believed that

the speci$c year, date, and time of birth were closely related to a personKs

character and fate )%hiou 1 <rishnamurti, *++-. #his school can calculate aperfect compass orientation for each individualKs birth time, day, and year in

order to maximize his or her harmony.

Feng Shui is complex yet common sense knowledge. #he applications are

very depend on which school of taught and the available resources at the site.

2owadays. Feng Shui continues to be widely practiced in societies inuenced by

%hinese culture, such as &ainland %hina, #aiwan, (ong <ong, Singapore, Lapan,

garden is the media to exhibit the shifting of culture, personal identify even the

relationship in the home. Marden design endures the principle from landscape

like proportion, variation, plant texture, combination and foliage. Marden becomeso remarkable after postwar. #here are several research showing that garden

design had move toward to reect human achievement either culture, change of

social and economic pattern. )%aldocott, *++, Cilson *++3, 'skew 1

people to develop their very own residential garden.

7n many occasion, garden design in this late modernity often display the

way nature to be altered or controlled by person@s culture )'nderson, *++-.

Marden are so related to human especially resident garden where human is live

on the site and have the direct access to it. #he idea of cultural face of

residential garden elaborate more from %aldicott )*++-. She explained garden

have pick as a site for human to interact with nature which had modify according

to culture and action from gardener. Studying residential garden could also

understand the way people modify, creating and maintain the landscape around

researcher suggest that garden design should obey the nature@s system which

recently become a trend in garden design. Eanielle Eagenais )34*3- argued that

most ancient landscape designer notify the inuence of ecological science on

contemporary garden. #hese ideology have further changing the basic of designprinciple before the design process. 9ut some designers do condemn this kind of

design philosophy is hardly suit to reality design in landscape and garden. ' new

concept of garden design have to be explorer and de$ne to gear the whole

environment of landscape design.

=n another hand, garden is probably the best treat to the residents.

Desidential garden is good performing as discuss before as individual have the

access to natural on a direct manner. )9hatti 1 %hurchm 3444-. 'nd as

between human and nature in daily routine but engagement and learning about

mother nature. #he same idea adopt by 9hatti )*+++-, garden now is not only

literally provide the joyful of nature yet o8er opportunity for environmental

education and measurement planning. 2evertheless, in some extend garden and

gardening do e!uip with the ability to enhance life and residential area in this

of the #aoist paradise resemble a Nworldinapot@ which inclusive of owing

stream, open space, winding path leading to !uiet shelter, narrow entrances and

enclosure mountain )%hen 1 Cu, 344+-. #hese elements in Feng Shui landscape

is generally transplant into garden with the same model of setting. Dossbach and

:in )*++H- explained Feng Shui landscape design is actively copy the #aoist

paradise. #hus, Fung Shui garden design express through kind of spiritual inner

feeling instead of physical function or social culture which totally di8erent from

;nglish and French garden ):u, 344+-.

B1. Anal*sisFeng Shui practice does not establish a $rm guideline which lead to

branches of Feng Shui practice on the $eld. #hese practices are very dependingto the Feng Shui &aster understanding on Feng Shui, and throughout their

experience in design Feng Shui land.

B1 Understanding on Feng Shui:ilian #oo, the famous Feng Shui &aster in &alaysia, mentioned outdoor

Feng Shui design of your residential area is lot more important than the indoor as

auspicious energies could be created at outdoor setting. She believe that a good

Feng Shui not only facilitates resident while promote their health, prosperous and

happiness. #he point of view for :ilian #oo is !uite similar to both Loey 0ap and

0uen (ui. 9oth Feng Shui &aster agreed Feng Shui is mostly manipulated by the

exterior factors. 2evertheless, Loey 0ap do emphasized that interior design for

residential should consider as well to proper align the indoor design toward the

exterior Ji. Loey 0ap argued some manmade feature duly not a8ect the Feng

Shui of the surrounding which di8erent from :ilian #oo and 0uen (ui. (an

explained Feng Shui should always complement to the nature. Feng Shui concept

is rather di8erent from modern architecture which tend to con!uer the nature.

#hought reading the tough from these Feng Shui &aster, we could easily notice

:ilian #oo and 0uan (ui having !uite same ideology and understanding toward

Feng Shui. 9oth master advocated outdoor Feng Shui design is the key to

achieve good Feng Shui for residential. Loey 0ap consider the interior and exterior

of residential is e!ually important. (an however less tough about Feng Shui asstandalone setting but look Feng Shui as a big picture of environment.

B1' Feng Shui PrincipleChen come to the principle of Feng Shui at outdoor setting, concept of 0in

and 0ang is repeating in almost all Feng Shui &asters. 0in and 0ang theory is

happened to be the foundation of Feng Shui. 0in and 0ang derive elements and

aspects into dark and light or passive and active. 's mention by Loey 0ap, both

0in and 0ang is coexist where these energies are restraining each other. 0in and

0ang energy have to keep balance in order to archive good Feng Shui. :ilian #oo

briefs some lively example like decorate the shady )0in- corner in your residentialgarden with some eyecatching colour ower or plants )0ang- to keep the garden

balance in energy. 0uan (ui too emphasizes the important of keeping 0in and

0ang balance, if the balance is not archive, scourges will bring to the family who

reside the house.

9eside to 0in and 0ang concept, Feng Shui &asters give the same priority

to the ow of Ji )positive energy- in examine the Feng Shui of the land. (an, the

expert in studying ancient %hinese Feng Shui explain the origin of Feng Shui is

depending on two schools of studies which are Duan #ou and :i Ji. 9asically Duan

#ou is the study on mountain@s shape and river ows. #his is the very $rst time

Feng Shui &aster discover the energy ow. Ji is important in Feng Shui where if

the place manage to retain the Ji in the area, the place will be considering good

Feng Shui and bene$t the residents. #he principle of Ji is well adopt by Loey 0ap

who suggested Ji could manipulated for speci$c goals for daily life. 'nd the key

to trigger ow of Ji is movement, speci$cally referring only to gentle movementrather than hash one. (owever, for Loey 0ap, Ji is unable to be create through

manmade element. #his remind the ideology of (an where Feng Shui element

should always rely on nature context. #here are some places named as NEragon

'cupoint@ where strong wind is unreachable thus retain energy and contain water

to allow Ji to be layover. #his is a place where good in Feng Shui and demanding.

Ji could able to introduce too to your residential by techni!ue named :i Ji. 's

told by (an, :i Ji enable formulate and arrange the place to archive balance of

0in 0ang, Five ;lements, and the #ight #rigrams thus inviting Ji to the place.

School of :i Ji is practice by :ilian #oo deeply in her consultant career. 7t

sound more practical when it come to the context of urban residential. 's :i Ji

enable post recti$cation to receive the bene$t of good Feng Shui, there

recti$cation can be done even in the small garden especially in urban residential

area. :ilian #oo shared that residential Feng Shui should be $rst to consider and

should begin at your home. Unlike Loey 0ap and (an, :ilian #oo more focus on

position Feng Shui. #he most basic position Feng Shui divided the residential into

? positions and represent by ? animals, red phoenix for front of your house, black

tortoise for back of your house, green dragon for left of your house and lastly

white tiger for the right of your house. #hese position carry their own uni!ue

properties and suitable for speci$c landscape feature. Ded phoenix represented

opportunities, black tortoise represent support, green dragon and white tiger

both represent protection for the house.

B1- &ethodolog* and Application of "utdoor Feng Shui

B1-1 Yin and Yang #heor* 8Lilian #oo C (oe* Yap9's mention previously, 0in and 0ang is the foundation of Feng Shui. #hus,

it is important to keep it balance in your residential garden. :ilian #oo suggest to

have ower bed at the shady corner to allow ower serve as 0ang energy to

restrain the 0in energy at shady place. Same goes to the shady part at tall trees

which may plant with varieties of low lying shrubs. Loey 0ap on another handadvises the most 0in sector is located at south west of residential. #herefore,

water feature are most welcome to introduce to this sector to create 0an energy.

For the most 0ang sector at north east of your house, it is great to have mountain

as support for your family. 'nyway, (ill or tall building are acceptable to serve

the same purpose.

B1-1' Planting Selection 8Lilian #oo! Yuen %ui C %an9/lanting selection for Feng Shui landscape is !uite exible and

manipulated to meet the household preference. #here are still some suggested

planting from Feng Shui &aster which all these species should symbolic for great

B1-1, 2ardinal Direction 8Lilian #oo! (oe* Yap C Yuan %ui97t is important to understand the in Feng Shui, each cardinal direction

including the secondary cardinal direction represent each human desire. %lari$ed

in :ilian #oo write up, these human desires are career, knowledge, ancestors,

wealth, fame, relationship, children and benefactors. #o receive the bene$t from

these cardinal direction, the setting of these direction of your house have to

B1-17 Water Ele)ent 8(oe* Yap! Yuen %ui9Cater is the most important element in Feng Shui as it serve as a place

where the Ji overlay and retain at the area. 0uen (ui explained in Feng Shui,

kinetic water is preferable. #he characters of water elements is favourable to

opinion on this statement. Loey 0ap stated stagnant water is not generating Ji as

moving water do. (e remind that ripping could provide harmonious Ji ow hence

allow the people around get rid of stresses and worries.

Since moving water able to introduce Ji to your house, 0uan (ui

suggested that it will be more desirable to have wider opening for the incoming

waterway and narrow opening for the outgoing waterway. #his work as retention

for the Ji thus the house can collect the Ji for the bene$t.7n the context of &alaysia, we having many monsoon drain which passing

through our front and back yard. 0et, that is a di8erent scenario explained by

Loey 0ap. Eespite water is carry by the drain, these water usually moving fast

and it tends to disperse and block the Ji to enter your house. 7n certain extend,

these big monsoon drain will create Sha Ji )negative energy- toward your house.
