He has coached, St Andrews fencers to take 1st and 2nd places at the Scottish Open, individual finalists in the premier division BUCS championships, the Men’s A Team to the 2011 BUCS premier division final and the 2014 Women’s team Scottish Conference winners. He has helped coach Junior and Senior Scottish Squads. He also helped coach the Scottish Saltires Pentathlon fencers. While living in the USA he was a finalist in the Arizona Open and in 2002 was awarded ‘ teacher of the year’ from Wichita State University’s Department of Kinesiology. While in his role as a Director for Scottish Fencing he helped set up workshops for the coaching of wheelchair fencing and organised courses for refereeing. In recent years he has been regularly traveling to Italy to study the teaching methodologies of one of the world’s leading fencing nations. Head Coach Prof Phil Carson BA(Hons), MBA, British Academy of Fencing, has been involved in fencing for over 30 years and has been coaching since 1986. He is a full three weapon diploma master with the British Academy of Fencing (BAF) Phil has honed his coaching skills by travelling extensively to study some of the best coaches in Russia, Hungary and the USA. As a result his club in London became one of the strongest sabre fencing clubs in the UK. As a result of his successes, in 2012 he decided to become a full time coach. After a short time in Sydney, he helped to set up the coaching and performance programmes in what is now the largest fencing club in Australia. He is currently the coach to several Scottish, British and Commonwealth Champions.

The Club

The Facilities

• Currentlywehave3pistesthatweuseformatchesandteamtraining.• Groupfootworkandbladeworksessionsareheldinthegymnasium.• WehaveexcellentgymfacilitiesattheSportsCentrealongwithtopclassStrength&

Conditioningstaffwhodevelopsportspecificprogrammesforourathletes.• Overthenext3yearstheClubfacilitiesarescheduledforexcitingimprovementswith

plansforagreaternumberofearthedpistesandnewscoringapparatus.Withtheseimprovementswehopetoincreaseourmembership,holdBritishUniversitiesandColleges Sport (BUCS) and Scottish Student Sport (SSS) matches and host our own tournaments and training camps.

The Fencing ProgrammeThe Teams

• CurrentlywehaveaWomen’sATeamintheBUCSpremierdivision,aMen’sATeamintheBUCSpremier division and a Men’s B TeamintheTrophyCup.

• TheUniversityofStAndrewsFencingClubhasalongandsuccessful history within Scottish Student Sport (SSS) (2014 ladies individual foil championandtheWomen’sConferenceTeamwinners)andBritishUniversitiesandCollegesSport(BUCS–2011Men’sTeampremierdivisionfinalists),withboththeWomen’sAandMen’sATeamscompetingintheBUCSpremierleaguewhereteamstake part in weekly matches against other British universities.

The Squads

• Teamselectionsarebaseduponindividualperformancewithintheclubsteamtry-outeventsandotherexternaltournaments.SquadtrainingisonceaweekwithmatchesbeingfoughtonaWednesdayafternoon.

• TheSquadsaresupportedbyamultidisciplinaryteamwithaccesstocoaches,strength and conditioning specialists, nutritionists, massage therapists, physiotherapists and sports psychologists.

• PlayerssettheirownperformancegoalswiththehelpoftheDirectorofFencingand the Head Coach.

• Regularvideoanalysisisavailableforsquadplayersthroughouttheseason• Playersareencouragedtoenterindividualtournamentsregionally,nationally

and where appropriate internationally.• Aholisticintegratedapproachtotrainingisconstantlybeingdeveloped, monitoredandevaluatedinordertoincreasetheeffectivenessofourprogramme.

Club players

• Theclubalsooffers2sessionsduringtheweekforrecreationalfencing.Studentcoacheshelpwiththedevelopmentofthelessexperiencedmembers.

• ClubmembersprogressattheirownrateandhaveaccesstotheHeadCoachandDirectorforguidanceandappropriateadvice,beitfunoradvancementontooneofthe teams.

Coaching Education & Outreach

• Studentshavetheopportunitytotakelevel1coachingexamswhilestudyingatStAndrews and encouraged to apply their new skills in outreach programmes for local schoolchildrenandClubs.
