Welcome to the APRIl edItIon I hope you all have had a good winter and are looking forward to a wonderful and prosperous spring! Here’s hoping the weather picks up for us!

We are exhibiting at quite a lot of shows this year which I hope some of you can come and visit. We are at the Yorkshire Show, APf, British Beef event, GLEE and of course Driffield. We are holding the fencing competition there and are still waiting for you to make your entries and come and compete. There’s over £1,500 worth of prize money up for grabs, see pages 10 and 62 for more details.

In time of recession we have to look at our businesses and rein in costs but also look outside the box! People at home are looking at the same things so M&M Timber came up with grow your own veg boxes which are now flying out of the door, so well done to them for trying something new. If we can come up with more ideas like that it would increase our productivity and profit! See page 21 more details.

They do say you should never talk about politics but the election is looming and all I am going to say on this subject is PLEASE vote! We can’t moan about the state of the country if we never take five minutes to vote! By the time the next edition is out we could hopefully have a new leader! Guess who I am voting for?

Don’t forget the golf day which is held on the 6th of May at Henley-in-Arden golf club, a chance for a great bacon buttie, playing 18 holes and a delicious dinner afterwards! We look forward to seeing you there!

Kind Regards Simone [email protected]

m&m tImBeR Goes dUtch on neW seAson PRodUctsAs garden retailers get set for the annual springtime sales rush, the Dutch owned Outdoor Life Group is preparing for its first ever season alongside it’s new UK distribution partner - garden lifestyle and landscape products specialist M&M Timber Limited .

Last year the Midland timber products giant gained the sole UK distribution rights to the highly respected Euro brands Hillhout, Holgard and Outdoor Life Products, a move that secures a complete one stop shop solution for the entire garden and leisure industry.

The garden and leisure sector accounts for more than a third of M&M Timber’s annual turnover. In recent years the company has signed up well over 300 independent retail garden centres and the number continues to grow in proportion to record year on year sales.

Much of the recent growth in sales can be attributed to M&M Timber’s remarkable success through the nation’s preoccupation for self sufficiency, with an unprecedented demand for its extensive range of grow-your-own products. Joining the popular ‘Veggibeds’ this year will be the new Bayton Greenhouse range, cold frames, herb troughs and grow bag stands, which already feature in major DIY stockists and promise to take M&M Timber’s sales targets to even higher levels.

Not content with donating £1,500 and fencing materials in support of a local conservation project, an intrepid team from the Sheffield-based manufacturer, Gripple put their backs into making it happen!

Over a wet week, the team erected more that 150 metres of fencing, employing the unique Gripple wire joiner, and planted some 400 young hedgerow trees on the Carr House Meadows Nature Reserve, which is one of Sheffield Wildlife Trust’s projects.

Situated on the River Don corridor just outside Wharncliffe Side, the reserve is a rare example of unimproved grassland, untreated by artificial fertilisers and pesticides, and a reminder of how the farmed landscape used to be. The Wildlife Trust has been working to replant and rejuvenate the meadows which are rich in wildlife and wildflowers and the new stock proof

fence will protect the fledgling trees from grazing animals while the species-rich hedgerow becomes established.

John Paul Ward, River Don manager at Sheffield Wildlife Trust, said: “We are extremely grateful to Gripple for their contribution towards this project, particularly for their ‘people power’, which will make the meadows more welcoming to wildlife and bring people closer to nature.”

five hundred pounds of the cash donation came from Gripple’s charity committee which supported almost 50 different charities during 2009.

ConFor has set out the opportunities and challenges presented by the transition to a low-carbon economy, and highlighted the particular need to drive up supplies of wood .

Launching Confor’s business plan for 2010-13, chairman, Colin Mann, said, “Our industry is entering a period of great change and the role of Confor is now more necessary than ever in order to represent our members and help in the process of maximising the wide range of opportunities ahead for forestry and timber-based businesses.

“We have firmly entered the age of the low-carbon economy and the sector has a huge amount to offer in

terms of climate change mitigation, use of low-carbon products, sustainable economic growth, as well as, environmental biodiversity and the attraction of our forests for recreation.”

Understanding and influencing the transition to a low-carbon economy and addressing potential supply and demand imbalances are among the issues identified as key to supporting sustainable forestry and wood-using businesses in the UK and the comprehensive range of environmentally positive benefits which forests and timber provide.

Brooks were asked to produce a range of forged components for a valued client who is installing fencing panels at a prestigious inner city centre site in London .

The 144 x 2m long panels were made up of 12 individual components, which were drawn up by their graphic designer using their in-house CAD/CAM facility from an existing fence panel supplied by the client. All components went through their approval process prior to the products going into production. Using their Solid Works design programme, a Solid Cam model was created of all of the components. After approval, this was then transferred directly to a vertical machining centre within the Brooks tool-room, keeping tool making cost to a minimum and reducing lead times.

Company spokesman Denis Villa stated that this technology enables the company to attract increasing numbers of extensive contracts in the ironwork business. The panels, which were made from forged mild steel, included scrolls and rings in 20 x 10mm, multi punched rails in

50 x 10mm and 25mm square for the railheads and railheads on bar. Other components included; collars, spacer bars and backstays. The punched rails involved several departments within the Brooks manufacturing facility. Punching, machining to mill the ends of some of the bars to provide a step to sit on joining brackets and drilling to provide access for fixing bolts on site. An initial supply was delivered to site which enabled the components to be assembled and installed with additional supplies planned at convenient intervals throughout the length of the project. Another quality product manufactured on behalf of our client, and it looks just great.

The Get Britain Building (GBB) campaign has thrown its weight behind a new report, produced by the Cut the VAT Coalition- on the effect of cutting VAT for housing repair, maintenance and improvement (RMI) as an important first step in convincing the Treasury to take action to improve demand and employment in the building industry .

The ‘Opportunities and Costs of Cutting VAT: The effects of selected reductions in the rate of VAT on the labour element of housing repair, maintenance and improvement’ report identifies the following opportunities for the Government;

• To create 55,000 new jobs in the first year of a VAT cut

• free up £450m per annum for renovations on social housing

• Bring 19,000 social houses back into use per year

• See sustainability improvements to 174,000 private domestic properties

• Reduce housing carbon emissions by up to 337,000 tonnes

This new area will add 20,000 square metres to the show’s site and half a kilometer of trade stands. Building on the success of last year’s Glee, many leading garden and leisure brands have confirmed that they will be returning to Glee 2010 with expanded stand spaces and bigger plans than in previous years . Many more have also rebooked after a successful Glee 2009, and even more key names are set to return having missed last year’s show .

Key brands such as Gardman, Bosmere, Handy Distribution, Dutch Imports, fallen fruits, Norfolk Leisure, Rondeau Leisure and Bonnington Plastics are just some of the suppliers that have all confirmed their attendance at September’s show (20-22 September, NEC

Birmingham), with stand expansion ranging from 50sq m to a huge 200sq m of extra space.

Bosmere, the leading supplier of garden care accessories is one of those that has increased its presence at the show. Tony Dedman, CEO of Bosmere explains: “Glee is the key event for us. We’ve been attending since we began 30 years ago and we intend to keep returning year after year! Last year we launched over 100 new products at the show and our stand was packed full of customers new and old throughout all three days of the show. We’re looking to build on this success by adding an additional 100m to our

stand for this year so we can launch even more products to the market, as well as offering more space for a breakout area for customers and meetings.”

Key brands returning to Glee having missed last year’s show include Tenax, Graf Limited, Bramblecrest, Whitefurze, Jonart and Grakka; whilst companies rebooked after a successful Glee 2009 include Burgon & Ball, Town & Country, Westland, fiskars, The Stewart Company, Briars, Taylors Bulbs, M & M Timber, Kelkay, Woodlodge and Draper Tools.

Daniel Thurlow, Glee show director said: “We are delighted to see so

many brands returning in 2010. We want suppliers to use Glee to its full potential and in a way appropriate to their business needs, which is why we don’t cap anyone’s stand size at Glee. The show is a great opportunity to present wide ranges of product and merchandising ideas to an audience of engaged buyers. The fact that many are increasing their presence with us is a positive sign for the industry. It shows confidence for the year and is a genuine endorsement of Glee.”

Grange Fencing, which turns over £33m and supplies almost 3,000 miles of fencing per year, has been concentrating on building stock and investing in extra storage capacity and more flexible manufacturing . This includes bringing 40% of the manufacturing of the recently acquired Metpost back from the Far East to a new factory at Grange’s Telford base, which will enable them to be supplied just in time .

“Our number one priority is service and we aim to deliver in full, on time, every time,” said Mr Hill. “So we decided to work between Christmas and New Year, rather than have our usual two-week shutdown. We’re now holding more stock of finished product and components than ever before because I think there’s going to be a supply chain crunch.”

Mr Hill believes that destocking throughout the supply chain, coupled

GRAnGe ARe BUIldInG UP ImPRessIVe stocKs

with recent closures of European mills specialising in fencing components, could lead to shortages and that merchants and retailers who leave ordering for Easter to the last minute could come unstuck; “If a retailer or

merchant doesn’t have it when he wants it, he can’t sell it,” he said. “The most important challenge for the fencing industry is to gear up for Easter so as to run through the peak season without any fall-off in quality

of service,” he added.

EFIA launch a FREE option for any business in the fencing industryto place job vacancies or seek work

A new option available to all in the fencingindustry is now available from the EFIA website at http://www.efia.co.uk that is now thealternative URL of http://efia.fences.org.

Although originally developed for EFIAmembers only, it is felt that in these difficulttrading days, the Association should assistthe industry as a whole where it can andneedless to say, including the smaller fenceinstaller who has always been recognised byEFIA.

Not only can a vacancy be advertised butfirms looking for work can now advertise theiravailability – useful to sub-contractors.

As a guide, a number of model vacancies arepresently shown on the website and will givea good idea to anyone not previously makingsuch calls in the past.

The EFIA webmaster will check all entriesand, if considered necessary, suggest analternative wording to make theadvertisement more clear.Unless minor, the advertiser will be contacted to agree to the change.

Unfortunately offering a free service is alwaystaken by a few ‘comics’ as a way of makingspoof entries but it is anticipated that theeditor will weed-out such foolishness and notallow publication.[Since it is now possible to trace the sender of suchspoofs, it will not be too difficult to identify a persistentoffender and take remedial action.]

The advertiser is expected to contact theeditor when a vacancy or application hasbeen filled so that it may be archived andremoved from the website. In any event, the advertisement may beremoved after THREE MONTHS.

EFIA understands that the new FencingPortal will also make this service availablethrough their site that resulting fromunfortunate delays, it is now expected to belaunched in late April/early May.From what we have seen, this website will beof significant benefit to all that register therewith its regularly updated news items.Like the Job Vacancies option on the EFIAweb, this new Fencing Portal will be open toall and offering freely available opportunitiesas well as other fee paying opportunitiesnecessary to support the costs involved.

It is anticipated that existing EFIA membersonly will be the first to ‘sign-up’ and give asignificant database of firms that will ‘iron out’any ‘bugs’ that all new webs seem to incurdespite the best of efforts by all involved. However, you can always [email protected] to pre-register.

Warwickshire-based Cotswold Decorative Ironworkers have played a major role in the refurbishment of one of the country’s leading historic parks following a £2 million grant from the National Lottery Fund .

The company was involved in the refurbishment of iron gates and fencing at the Grade II listed Capability Brown-designed, Langley Park in Buckinghamshire. The Park and its 18th century mansion, which isn’t currently open to the public, are owned by Buckinghamshire County Council.

CDI was sub-contracted by UPM Tilhill in the £85,000 project; classic parkland railings were installed and gates restored. CDI blacksmiths built 1,200 metres of estate fencing with 14 access kissing gates around the Arboretum and walled garden. The original entrance gates to Langley Park were taken away for restoration and then refitted. Hughie Powell says: “Our craftsmanship will stand the test of

time – the estate fencing and kissing gates will still be in place during the next century.”

The historic medieval parkland at Langley Park was once the location of huge roaming deer herds as part of a royal manor administered by a succession of monarchs since the 13th century. Buckinghamshire County Council has been working with partners on practical management and conservation, improving access and recreational opportunities - and securing a better understanding of Langley Park’s history and the many areas of horticultural interest in the park. As well as the walled arboretum and azalea-filled Temple Gardens there are fine examples of veteran oak and lime trees in the 130-acre park.

forestry management has been a key feature of the project and final elements of the softwood ‘nursery crop’ have been felled leaving the young oak trees to develop and mature.

Trees have been removed where they were dying, diseased or dangerous, these tended to be self-sown and included historically incorrect species or those competing with an original veteran tree.

The HLf grant will support the project gardeners for five years and as a self-financing enterprise, the Country Park team hopes that after this period the support for the Park will be strong enough to maintain their presence beyond the grant. Meanwhile, Cotswold Decorative Ironworkers is becoming first choice for companies looking for classic and modern design in ironwork; It was chosen recently by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), to design,

Workers are being warned not to operate telehandlers if the right-hand side window is missing or broken, following a fatal incident . A 36-year-old man was apparently leaning through the broken window aperture when he was crushed by the descending boom . It is the third such fatal accident in the last seven years .

The side window on telehandlers (or variable reach trucks) is designed to prevent operator access to the boom. If the glass screen is broken or missing, operators may be tempted to lean out of the window aperture, for instance to adjust a mirror, and may inadvertently lower the boom onto themselves without being able to stop it.

The Health and Safety Executive has issued a Safety Notice recommending that machines in this condition be removed from use until the window has been replaced, and reminding users of their duty to carry out daily checks of the truck which should include the condition of the cab windows.

The Safety Notice can be viewed at http://www .hse .gov .uk/safetybulletins/telehandlers .htm

A company was today fined for safety offences after a young boy was crushed to death by electrically powered gates .

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) brought the prosecution following the death of nine-year-old Jason Keet on 13 April 2006. He died when his head was crushed by the gates at the entrance to a private block of flats in Balcombe Road, Poole, Dorset.

The young Bournemouth boy arrived to visit his grandparents with his mother when he tried to open the electric gates at the entrance to the block of flats. He got out of the car, put his arm and upper body around the gate pillar and pressed the button on the inside, meant for use by people leaving the block of flats on foot.

The gates were built in such a way

opening narrowed, and his head was crushed between the gate and the brick pillar.

faulkner Gates Limited, of The Hundred, Romsey, Hampshire, had previously pleaded guilty and was fined £80,000 and ordered to pay costs of £40,000. The firm was charged with breaches under Section 3 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work (HSWA) etc. Act 1974, following the incident.

Speaking after the hearing, the prosecuting HSEP Inspector, Stephen Hanson-Hall, said: “Jason was on his way to see his grandparents, and was simply trying to help his mum by opening the gates. There is no way he could have been expected to understand the risks created by the design of these gates.”

“Had the company undertaken a suitable and sufficient risk

assessment, and communicated its findings with the other companies involved in the design and installation of the gates, it is unlikely this tragedy would have happened. Where several organisations are involved in design and construction projects, they must cooperate and communicate effectively with one another to control risks to the public.”

“This is a tragedy that should never have happened. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of taking into account safety risks, to prevent another family going through the ordeal of losing a loved one - especially one so young, who should have had the whole of his life to look forward to.”

Further information can be found at www .hse .gov .uk .

that there was a gap large enough for him to get between the edge of one of the gates and a brick pillar. Because Jason had reached through to press the button, his head and upper body were in this gap when the gates started to move, the

ArcelorMittal Sheffield has been associated with the production and sales of high quality wire fencing for over 25 years . Their stock fencing is all made with truly centreless cores which allows for an easy roll out and deep crimps in the horizontal wires to allow for expansion, contraction and erection . Their most significant innovation has been to manufacture all their barbed wire and stockfencing from 2Life wire which is guaranteed to last at least twice as long as wire heavily galvanised to BS EN 10244 Class A . They are the only UK manufacturer to offer wire fencing made from such a high quality wire .

All of the Estate Brand High Tensile fencing is also manufactured with 4Life top and bottom wires in addition to the factory fitted Gripples on each roll. It is accepted that these two wires undergo the most work in a fence from a weather corrosion viewpoint. This wire is also made with a Zinc/Aluminium Alloy coating, but with a greater coating and so is guaranteed to offer 4 times the life of heavily galvanised wire.

The increase in the specification of these wires, is at no increased cost to the consumer. The aim is to reduce the cost to the farmer and contractor alike offering a high quality fence, with ease of erection and now an even longer guarantee on the life of the wire with the High Tensile fencing.

The current forecast in the marketplace is for price rises due to increased input costs for the raw materials used in making steel. Coke, Iron Ore and Zinc are all dramatically increasing in price now and over the coming months. Now, more than ever it is cost effective to use Estate products as they will give a longer life, but also will be easy, quick and reliable to erect.

A J Charlton & Sons Ltd were recently invited to attend the Royal Warrant Holders Trade Fair at Buckingham Palace . The event was organised by The Royal Warrant Holders Association and was the very first of its kind .

There are over eight hundred Royal Warrant Holders nationally but only one hundred could attend the fair. Charltons were delighted and honoured to be one of the hundred and those who attended represented a huge cross-section of trade and industry; other attendees including British Sugar, Jaguar Land Rover and fortnum & Mason.

The location of the event was very special to say the least. The surroundings were quite understandably inspiring. Michael Charlton was on hand to discuss the latest company and product developments with HM The Queen (obviously not the lady featured in the picture). Unfortunately Michael isn’t able to share the exact nature of the discussion, although we’re sure he would love to!

Calders & Grandidge whose name is synonymous with the supply of top notch pressure creosoted fencing and gates for the equestrian and agricultural markets, is very pleased to appoint Matthew Nice of MW Nice Ltd as a stockist / distributor in the Newmarket area .

Matthew has extensive experience in the equestrian fencing industry having worked as a front line fence erector in this sector for many years. As a stockist and distributor, Matthew fills a much needed niche in the Calders supply chain.

Based in Boston, Lincs, Calders & Grandidge make regular deliveries to the Newmarket and surrounding areas, but Matthew’s presence allows customers to collect any last minute requirements – a few extra posts or rails etc – without having to wait for a direct delivery, or take the lengthy drive to Boston. Customers in the area have welcomed this initiative, and there is no doubt that additional untapped business will result from this venture.

Matthew can be found at MW Nice Ltd, Brickfield farm, Culford, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP28 6UD, telephone no 01284 728484, and Calders would be pleased to hear from other potential stockists in the Lambourne or surrounding areas.

On the innovative front, Calders

recently supplied 100 new 9.0m pressure treated poles to the set of the new Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow, in Leavesden Studios Herts. More details on this to follow!

C&G have also just completed the supply of 100 8.0m pressure creosoted poles for perimeter fencing to a lion rescue centre in Doncaster. We’re not sure at this stage whether the fencing is to protect the public or the lions themselves!

Finally – a message to all customers of timber fencing . Timber is fast becoming the ‘new oil’ as mill output, particularly redwood, is becoming more restrictive . Fortunately, C&G have very strong supply partnerships, but even here prices are rising at an alarming rate . You have been warned!

The revolutionary Gripple T-Clip, launched recently by the Sheffield-based manufacturer, Gripple Limited, also with a facility in Aurora, Illinois, has been named as one of the top ten new agricultural products to be highlighted at next year’s World Ag Expo in Tulare, California .

The Gripple T-Clip is an innovative, wire-gripping device providing a revolutionary way of starting or terminating a fence. It replaces the time and trouble of knotting or stapling wires at the end post with a fast, simple twist and push action which then secures the wire.

All contractors need to do is push the Gripple T-Clip on to each line wire, wrap the line wire around the post and back into the T-Clip, working for both starts and ends and suitable for wire from 1.80mm - 3.25mm.

A panel of agribusiness professionals from across the United States, including farmers, ranchers and

industry professionals selected the T-Clip from more than 70 entries. Bernie Cargle, chairman of the event, said: “These ten products showed the most potential to advance ag production and have the most potential to power global agriculture.”

Eric Laroche, sales director of Gripple’s agricultural division, said: “This global ‘stamp of approval’ is a tremendous boost for the T-Clip which created a buzz at various UK trade shows. The capability of this innovative end-post terminator adds to the proven efficiency of the Gripple Plus which is already joining and tensioning agricultural and viticultural fencing wires across the world.”

During the expo, which is the largest annual exposition of its kind and estimated to attract 100,000 attendees, the Top-10 new products will be showcased inside then new product pavilion.

Everything in the garden is coming up roses for Midland garden lifestyle and landscape products specialist M&M Timber Limited . Having achieved a creditable turnover of £3 million in its first year, following change of ownership and restructuring, the company has now more than doubled its turnover and currently ranks as one the country’s foremost manufacturers and suppliers of quality timber products .

Since taking over in 2004, Managing Director Nigel Poyner’s ambitious ‘hands-on’ management style has taken the Midlands timber firm to one of the top suppliers in the fast growing garden and leisure market. During this period M&M Timber products have found their way into over 350 independent garden centres and major retail outlets throughout the country.

Despite the roller-coaster economic climate, M&M Timber has continued to back its business development with a solid investment programme in both plant and skilled personnel. Production capacity at the company’s impressive 22 acre site at Clows Top has been boosted with the introduction of advanced drying kilns for a new Micronised timber preservation process, a fully automated sanding line and heavy duty handling equipment.

Long term plans for the site include extended production facilities and additional storage areas, in line with projected development of new products and subsequent growth in sales. Recruitment is also high on the company’s agenda. This month, M&M Timber took on a further six full time employees to bring its total permanent workforce to more than 70.

Rutland’s electric fencing will be sold via Jacksons usual retail sales operation and will also be available to buy on-line at www.jacksons-fencing.co.uk, one of the leading industry web sites that receives up to 3,000 distinct hits a day. This will provide customers with a complete range of equestrian and agricultural fencing solutions.

Commenting on the introduction of a dedicated range of electric fencing products, CEO Richard Jackson comments, “Jacksons fencing has long enjoyed an established heritage in the equestrian and agricultural fencing sector and our company is renowned for its high quality, 25 year guaranteed timber fencing products. However, we recognised that many of our customers regularly have a requirement for electric fencing, to enable strip grazing or

simply to provide an added barrier to the existing post and rail fencing. It was important for us to identify a product range that matched up to Jacksons’ reputation for excellence and commitment to customer care. Happily, Rutland fencing shares the same values as our business and their outstanding range enables us to offer our equestrian and agricultural customers an unrivalled choice of exceptional products of proven superiority both in terms of performance and longevity.”

When you are choosing a company to get involved with there is usually one virtue that everyone looks for – reliability . Up in County Durham, in the North East of England, John Butterfield has been supplying exactly that for 25 years now .

John comes from a farming family. His father ran a dairy farm and his brother now runs a livestock enterprise including beef cattle and sheep. He still helps out occasionally, but it is his own business that takes precedence – a business that he got into through his farming experience.

‘When my brother made the decision to come back to the farm, after his school days, there wasn’t enough work for us both on the farm. I was always more interested in tractors and farm machinery so I started out in plant hire with just one tractor.’

The decision John made was to pay dividends as today his company, which trades as John R Butterfield Ltd, sees him having expanded to a staffing of 23 full-time employees.

‘I started off with one tractor on hire to Durham County Council and today we have 7 tractors on hire to them as well as many JCBs. We have had a few tight times along the way, like any business, but ours is profitable. I never thought, when I started out, that we would expand so much. We have been affected a little by the recession in recent times but it’s just starting to pick up a bit

now. We’ve certainly not suffered as much as others.’

John now runs a fleet of 7 tractors, 9 JCBs, 7 tracked excavators and 4 mini excavators, which his experienced team of operators drives for a number of customers. Durham County Council are still John’s biggest contract and many of his machines are involved on the Highways section of the council. Amongst the other big names in the area are Bullivant’s.

Nine years ago John shifted his tractor brand to Massey ferguson, which are all supplied by local agents Carrs Billington.

‘We started with a fleet of Zetor

tractors then we moved on to Case. I have always tried to find the most reliable tractors on the market and the Massey ferguson range has worked very well for us. Our tractors are usually around 95-100hp.’

John is also very happy with his fleet of JCBs, which he purchases from another local agent – TC Harrison in Sedgefield.

‘The JCBs offer a little more scope on the Highways section for Durham County Council.’

Whilst John’s business has expanded way beyond his expectations when he started, he isn’t really interested in growing any larger.

‘I’m happy with where we have got to in the past 25 years. I really didn’t expect to be in the position we are today.’

As with many employers John talks of increased paperwork and health and safety regulations taking up much more of his time than it all used to – but typically, he faces up to all of it with the same reliability that has been the hallmark of his business for the past 25 years.

Zaun has been specified to provide an innovative new fencing system for the development of a second Olympic standard pitch at Cannock Hockey Club, one of the most successful hockey clubs in the UK .

The fencing solutions specialist was selected as part of the multi-million pound project after manufacturing a brand new and completely unique solution that is specifically designed for hockey pitches.

Paul Painter, MD of Zaun explains: “The majority of hockey clubs nationwide use wooden boards to protect the pitch fencing at ground level from the cannon-like impact the ball makes. However, these boards get broken down quickly and have to be replaced regularly, which is extremely expensive. At Zaun, we have addressed this issue head-on by manufacturing a new hockey fencing system that does away with the

need for wooden boards altogether. Not only does this save money on the initial costs of purchasing and installing the boards, but it also reduces the high costs associated with ongoing maintenance and replacement for the end-user.”

“It was this innovative approach, coupled with our ability to manufacture the panels at our factory in Wolverhampton and first class service commitment that was a

sPecIfIed At cAnnocK hocKeY clUBmajor factor in the tender process for Cannock Hockey Club.”

Zaun’s new ‘Hockey Pitch’ fencing system uses a high density of horizontal wires in a close mesh pattern to ensure the fence can withstand the impact of a hock. Other features include a significant reduction in noise, which is a key consideration when seeking planning permission for a hockey pitch.

Ken Bedford, President of Cannock Hockey Club’s Ground Committee commented: “I would like to thank all at Zaun fencing for the efforts put into the supply and erection of the hockey fence surrounding our new pitch. When commencing this project, I was looking for a fencing system which would be more durable than the traditional type, particularly at each end behind the goals. The Zaun system provided this and more.”

After 12 years in the business, Park Lane Fencing Ltd in Birmingham really has gone from strength to strength, but just three years ago, its founders Jason Sheward and Matthew Adam dipped their toe in the unfamiliar pool of manufacturing .

Having both begun their fencing careers as “one man bands”, Jason and Matthew were brought together after Jason’s own work became somewhat unmanageable, he tells us: “I had some large contracts in and around Kent, through a motorway maintenance contractor.” This enabled me to expand the business and look to employ another gang to carry out contracts I had in the West Midlands. I knew Mat was in the industry and enlisted his help to carry out a number of jobs for me.

Jason and Matthew have been friends since their school days and although Matthew’s father had been a fencer his whole life, both men have tried and tested other careers, Matthew explains: “I actually did a

degree in Bio-Medical Science and worked in a hospital down in Oxford when I graduated, and Jason had always worked in the building trade

before we developed the company.”

After only six months working together professionally, Park Lane

fencing Ltd was born.

“We’ve only been at this office for three years, we moved here because

we had outgrown our old yard and needed a site with more space and where we could begin manufacturing steel gates and railings for our own work and also look to manufacture for others” Jason tells us. “Since moving we now fabricate all types of gates and railings for several other local fencing contractors and building contractors, this is a part of the business we are keen to expand.”

The bulk of the company’s fencing work stems from larger midlands based building contractors along with National contractors such as Rok and Thomas Vale, and is focused

primarily within the Midlands. Jason explains more: “Our jobs usually take a minimum of one week and can last up to six or even eight weeks, those larger jobs are the ones we look for. On the product front, we’ve definitely seen a move from palisade into mesh panel systems; I think if you talk to any fencing contractor they would agree over the last 3 or 4 years there has been a significant increase in the demand for mesh over all other systems.”

Understandably, the last two years have been challenging for Park Lane fencing as it has for the industry as a whole, but Matthew insists it

hasn’t all been doom and gloom: “If you had of come and seen us two years ago, our main work would have come from large industrial sheds and units, but as the credit crunch came about, that kind of work stopped all together;. What made things worse was that those jobs often involved 500-1000 metres of fencing. We had to diversify and concentrated our efforts in other areas such as the public sector in particular local authorities, and found work in other areas that we maybe had neglected slightly in the past.

Park Lane purchase their palisade from Metropolitan fencing, who

they work very closely with and they also buy their ever popular mesh and railing systems from IAE; their timber comes from Grangewood fencing and Earlswood Nurseries, all of which supply quality products and service.

Where the future is concerned, Matthew and Jason could not be more positive: “To move the business forward we are looking to purchase larger premises in South Birmingham, but we’ve had to put the breaks on that slightly, because of the economical climate. Moving here and beginning to manufacture has giving us a real boost so we would like to expand on that even more.”

R .M . Smith Fencing Ltd is every inch the family-run business . Not only are all members of the family involved in the business, the whole enterprise is backed up by the passion and dedication, continuing the legacy of the late Rod Smith: father, husband and founder of the company .

Starting out back in the early sixties, Rod officially began trading as R.M.Smith fencing Ltd in 1963, acquiring the site where business is still based today. In the late 80s, Rod and wife Janet’s children began to filter into the business, with sons Lyndon and Ryan making panels and creosoting them for pocket money and daughter Janine handling reception upon leaving University in the early 90s. Now, Janet remains a director of the company, Ryan and Lyndon work in operations and Janine handles the daily running of the enterprise.

She tells me: “In 1999, Dad wanted to retire, so Lyndon came off the tools and I started getting more involved in running the business. We took over the reins, while he fulfilled a lifelong ambition of taking his boat across the water and sailing down the french and Spanish canals with Mum.”

Now making their own metal gates as well as supplying and fitting automated gates, and both timber and steel fences, the company caters for the needs of domestic, supply-only and commercial projects, as well as the local authorities and construction industry – the latter having the most prominent share of trade. Despite construction being knocked sideways by the recent recession, last year proved to be the best yet for R.M.Smith fencing Ltd. Indeed, with 17 full-time staff working for the business, things have picked up so much that they

fAmIlY VAlUes

Mind you, there seems to be no shortage of the latter, with a busy yard outside and evidence of plenty of business on the books, Janine is confident about the year ahead and the clientele they continue to attract.

“One of most impressive jobs we’ve done was for the RNLI in Poole, Dorset. A number of kinds of fencing were required and we had to ensure that their specific requirements were met – and the end result was really impressive.”

There are big plans for the business in place, having recently taken over the whole premises at their site in Ringwood, Hampshire, after 43 years of leasing part of it to a sign-making company. The upstairs has now been converted into spacious office and stock room, though Janine tells me, “I’d like a showroom up and running so we can invite potential customers to see what we can offer - so that it’s

more than just words. We want to push more with the construction side of our work - and with supply chains now prominent in the construction industry, more people aren’t as focused on price anymore, they want quality – and that’s where we really come into our own.”

Of all the companies I’m sent to visit, R.M. Smith fencing Ltd appears to be one of the most well-managed and honourable, with Janine and her siblings all driven towards its continued success. The business’ traditional values are still firmly in place, as well as ambition for what is to come in the future, and I have no doubt that Rod would feel very proud of what his family have strived to achieve in his name.

With a firm eye on keeping ahead of the game, Janine spends a good deal of her time wading through hoards of red tape, ensuring the company has all the skills, qualifications and certificates required to maintain their quality of work. Currently 95% of the workforce hold fISS/CSCS cards, and Janine is working towards the next batch of staff achieving NVQs. In addition, the company has recently been granted CHAS registration and Janine’s brother-in-law Neil (who started working for the company on leaving school and has just turned 48!) is now a fully-qualified Health and Safety officer, having taken part in a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS). “Admittedly it’s a full time job keeping on top of it all, but it’s just something we have to do to remain competitive and continue to work”, Janine says.

timber update

Like Walford Timber, G . & M .B . Manning is a long established family business with an ethos of good service, quality products and a genuine interest in our customers and their success . It is based on the Bucks/Herts border and has been built up as a ‘one stop’ fencing supplier mainly to the trade .

Chris Dennis (nee Manning), the Managing Director, said: “This means that we carry an enormous range and quantity of products with the major added problem of a very small site. Over the last 5 years we have hugely increased our business with Walford’s. They put stock on the ground for us and we then draw this off as needed with the help of Tony fletcher, Senior Accounts Manager at Walford’s, who has a firm grip on what is going on. This arrangement has proved to be so successful that we increased our turnover with them by 30% last year!

We are now supplying pressure treated lap and closeboard panels

manufactured by Walford’s with a very good response from our customers. In a continuing drive to improve quality we have also taken the decision to supply Walford’s new brand ‘PermaTimber’ closeboard posts. Closeboard is an important part of our business and this will give an added protection to our customers.

We are keenly looking forward to working with Walford’s this year and beyond.

Borde Hill Garden has received a grant of £25,000 from English Heritage to electronically catalogue and map its trees and shrubs within the Grade II* listed garden, parkland and woodland . This award recognises the historical importance of Borde Hill’s botanically-rich tree and shrub collection .

English Heritage exists to protect and promote England’s spectacular historic environment and ensure that its past is researched and understood. Borde Hill Garden was created by Colonel Stephenson R. Clarke who, from 1893, sponsored many of the Great Plant Hunters’ expeditions to collect species from across the world. To keep track of this ever-growing collection, spanning some 40 years, Colonel Clarke produced a catalogue of everything planted at Borde Hill. This beautiful, bound volume detailing over 5000 trees and shrubs was completed in 1935

from the 1932 survey.

Borde Hill has continued to be planted with passion and care by four generations of the Stephenson Clarke family. Now, 75 years later, with English Heritage’s assistance, Borde Hill can utilise 21st century technology to map and re-catalogue its collection. The mapping process employs similar technology to car satellite navigation systems by using satellites to pinpoint the exact locations of the trees and shrubs that are spread over 200 acres of parkland and woodland. In addition to its location, information on every specimen will be recorded on a computer database. The mapping will be carried out over the next 12 months by arboriculturalist Phil Newson.

Charlotte McLean, South East regional landscape architect of English Heritage commented: “Borde Hill’s special interest is acknowledged by its II* grade.

BoRde hIll GARden ReceIVes £25,000 enGlIsh heRItAGe GRAnt

The main significance of the site is the unique plant collection. The Borde Hill collection has not been fully surveyed and recorded since 1932 and never using modern GPS methods. Gardens from this period are often particularly vulnerable due to their complexity. This survey will help those responsible for managing the gardens to assess the survival and condition of the plants.

Borde Hill’s head gardener, Andy Stevens, said: “The management of a botanical collection spread over such a large area is complex

and challenging. The production of accurate maps and an up-to-date catalogue will make this job much easier, allowing us to improve plant care as well as plant labelling for the benefit of our garden visitors.”

This year, Borde Hill celebrates its 45th anniversary since Sir Ralph Stephenson Clarke opened the garden in 1965 as a registered charity.

timber yard

We are pleased to be associated with Richardson Timber and wish

them continued success for the future

Harold Richardson of Richardson Timber Ltd is a very hardworking man; not only does he run the timber merchants full time with his team, but he occupies the family farm which is home to a 40-strong herd of Suckler cows .

A farmer by trade and tradition, Harold was the perfect candidate to manage what he calls an ‘agricultural based company’ and has, since 1988 when he founded the company, dedicated his time to its development and local recognition.

“22 years ago things weren’t very promising within the farming industry which meant that more and more people were trying to diversify. I didn’t know much about fencing or timber for that matter, no more than any other famer to be honest, but I sort of learnt on the job. It was something I could do on the farm itself and would run well alongside it. At one stage I considered diversifying by lorry driving, but that would have taken me away from the farm for days on end; now I’m able to switch between the two and still do both full time.”

In humble beginnings Harold used the farm’s unused acreage to build the timber yard on and worked “out the back of my pick up truck” to begin transporting the materials. But he didn’t stop there: “We then converted the hay barn and after a couple of years built this retail area; originally we dealt just in stakes, but progressively we’ve got into sawn timber and now even drainage; anything a farmers wants really. We are very farmer orientated here, I’d say around 90% of our business is within the agricultural sector and because our site is so remote, farmers know exactly where we are.”

hARold And RIchARd of RIchARdson tImBeR

After Harold spent over 12 years running the business on a daily basis, he decided in 2002 to make the most significant, non-aesthetic change to the company: he employed Richard. He tells us, “Richard had worked at Countrywide farmers before hand, but I offered him the position of Manager here and he fitted in perfectly. Richard watches the shop and the yard everyday; I prefer it that way in some ways, because it means I can be out and about delivering. It’s quite strange to think that over the 12 years I basically served every single customer that came through the gates myself. In hindsight employing Richard was definitely the best business decision I’ve ever made. When he came I could virtually walk out the door, give him a list of suppliers and he would just get on with it.”

Alongside Richard and Harold, the Richardson Timber team consists of Harold’s sister and business partner Sara who deals on the book-keeping side of things and Charlie who works out on the yard.

As well as stocking sawn timber, the company also offers a full range of fencing, animal feed, medicines, clothing and of course galvanised and wooden gates, which they buy from AJ Charlton & Sons, who they have a longstanding relationship with; both professionally and personally. One area of the company that Harold

has always wanted to expand on was manufacturing, although his ideas have fallen short in the past through no fault of his own: “We did consider putting a treatment plant in, but the regulations were very strict. There’s a stream across the way so it just wasn’t viable. Without the stream there, we could have done it, but the regulators basically told us it was a no-go area. Aside from that, I’m always looking to expand because in business you’re even going forward or going backwards, there’s no such thing as standing still.”

After visiting Richardson Timber, its clear that Harold and the team’s relationship with their customers is well established and wonderfully

welcoming: “Most of the customers that come in now are our friends, they leave satisfied because they know that I am interested in the same things as they are; I’m a farmer, and he or she is a farmer, we talk the same language.”

The company’s customer base will continue to grow over the coming years as Harold shows no sign of slowing down: “I hope to stay fit, carry on working and not retire. The idea of retiring fills me with dread; I had a holiday once and I’ve never been so bored in my life,” laughs Harold.

Midway Fencing, as you’d expect, is based in the Midlands, specifically in Belper, Derbyshire . Having two experienced and locally well-known gentlemen at it’s reins together with the support of the long-serving established workforce, it gives the impression of a ‘family’ type run business .

Dave Byard founded Midway fencing in the early nineties. After a few years of success and having become ‘reasonably established’, he decided that another man was needed: “Not being a Limited company at that stage, we had a turnover of around £200,000 and it was getting to the stage where I couldn’t handle it on my own.”

And handle it alone he didn’t; in 1996 Steve Edwards came on board as a new Director after leaving the fencing

and access solutions company Darfen. Steve and Dave are in no way related, but were brought together by the fencing community itself. Steve tells us: “It was actually timber supplier Mark Coleridge, that approached me saying that Dave needed someone to help, and so I joined soon after. I think because fencing can be a very close knit industry, you know a lot of the people in the bigger companies; if you don’t know of them intimately, you do know they exist.”

Both gentlemen were very much familiar with the fencing industry from a young age; Steve has been involved since leaving school, and Dave in his own words has “been in the game for many years”. His first experience was motorway related, when it was more parapet railings and safety fencing rather than general fencing.

Midway fencing’s work doesn’t sit within one particular niche market. Instead it spreads it’s trade across a whole range of commercial markets. Steve tells us: “If it’s fencing, we’ll do

it. We really work on the basis where, if we’re versatile, we’ve got so many more options. There are too many people that do only security fencing or only agricultural, or only work for

Dave and Steve have certainly done their best to ensure that all business-related opportunities are optimised; even in the early years, when the company was run from Dave’s home, he made use of an offer he simply couldn’t refuse: “my client J C Balls & Sons offered me a perfectly located, well presented office on their industrial estate, and we’ve been there ever since. We’re at the size now where we are quite comfortable. We don’t want to grow any more because I think that if you get too big, you start to lose control.”

On the contracting side, the team at Midway fencing have an impressive back catalogue of work. Steve explains; “We’ve done a lot of work over the last few years in electric sliding gates for clients such as Royal Mail and power stations. We’ve also fitted several turn stiles for the London Underground , and just last week we were working up in Edinburgh.”

Similarly to most industries, there’re certain types of fencing that have in recent years become more, dare we say trendy. “I would say that the most popular product out there at the minute is the steel mesh panel systems. Also, we’re finding more

work erecting acoustic fencing than ever before: especially in and around supermarkets where noisy delivery vehicles are an issue.”

Being Quality Assured to BS EN ISO 9001:2008 in addition to being registered with Constructionline and a member of the federation of Small Businesses gives new and existing clients peace of mind, and allows the company to delve into new markets. As a Quality Assured company contracts have been awarded on major highways erecting deer fencing and noise barriers.

When asked what his most proud

or inventive business decision has been, Dave answered: “ The new and environmentally friendly wood-burning heating system we installed last year was a really good idea that has proved incredibly cost-efficient. But without a doubt, I am most proud of how we’ve built up the company to its current strength and reputation.”

Wood-Mizer’s European headquarters and its band sawmill and wood processing kit manufacturing facility celebrates it’s twentieth year in 2010 . The Polish based operation serves Europe, Africa, India and Asia, including the Far East .

Director Richard Vivers anticipates a fair wind this year, “Last year, having arrived at some painful personnel decisions we devised new approaches to engineering design, purchasing, manufacture, assembly and transportation. The moves have saved costs and led to wood processing equipment more suited to changing times.”

The plant, located in Poland was opened in 1990, since then, it has been enlarged from a few hundred square metres to over 6000 m2, with state of the art machinery and processes, winning personnel and

corporate awards.

Notably, Wood-Mizer, the only band saw manufacturer which makes blades too has increased its Polish blade lines to fourteen; it launches a new band saw blade this year. In 1990 the plant produced a few sawmills per week. In 2008 it turned out 50-60 mills. In 2009 that figure declined to 2007 levels. This year however, a greater number of mills than in 2007 will come off production lines.

The headquarters’ inception was the brainchild of the Laskowski family who founded Wood-Mizer Inc, in Indianapolis in 1982. Donald Laskowski, together with fellow engineer Daniel Tekulve had invented the thin kerf technology for their small band sawmills in an Indiana garage in 1982.

There are now 40,000 of the company’s band sawmills operating worldwide. Wood-Mizer’s service centres are increasing, with representatives in more than 100 countries. These are in addition to wholly owned branches in Germany,

Great Britain, Norway, Romania and Russia (which has its own network of blades distributors in 20 Russian regions).

Spring is well and truly upon us and for all the fencing contractors who, like Alan Fish, go it alone, it’s a chance to shake off the winter blues and get back to work: good, honest, traditional work that is .

Alan works single-handedly on site, with occasional help from David Lawson who is based in Otley. He works mainly in agricultural fencing, and is all too familiar with both the farming and fencing industry.

“I didn’t take after my father at all really, or course growing up on a farm I understood how important boundary fencing was but I never thought I’d end up doing it for a living. All my family were farmers you see, including my Brother for a short while, but to be honest it was never for me. fencing is in my blood now, and I can’t seem to get rid of it” Alan laughs. “I think it was 1989 when I first started, but I wasn’t doing fencing work as such, I just used to clean out old farming buildings and what not with my Bobcat loading machine that I bought off my own back a few years earlier. Nowadays, because more and more farmers seem to buying their own machinery and cleaning buildings out themselves, the fencing for me has skyrocketed.”

Having dabbled in engineering, Alan’s fencing work always remained consistent and the custom was always there: “My work grew gradually through word of mouth; strangely enough I’ve never had to

advertise. What usually happens is I complete a job, and people like what they see and so word spreads.

Alan’s trusty 3 foot-wide Bobcat loader was used for over a decade and was eventually replaced by a Kilworth Tractor model. Like many fencing contractors, it was the purchase of a post knocker in recent years that now allows Alan to complete a job with real efficiency and quality: “To be honest, I don’t know what I would do without it; I decided on a Wrag model and I’ve never doubted it, those days of used a wooden mallet are long gone! I own just the one tractor

contractor

Where unusual jobs are concerned, Alan tells us how he’s seen and done it all; “Last year we worked at Bramham Park at the Leeds Music festival site, where we erected 64 pairs of gates to keep all the

unwanted festival-goers out. I’ve also had an enquiry recently, about doing some work for an Angling club who are after some Otter fencing putting up, which is quite unusual.

Let’s hope the work, however unusual, continues for Alan.

Having supplied Mounted Hydraulic Breakers for many years, I have found that they’re of particular appeal to fencing contractors; they can be used, not only for breaking out rock and concrete, but also with a suitable Cap they are ideal for post driving . Whilst new Breakers are sold, the majority of my business comes in the form of refurbished Hammers, provided by the leading makers!

When I was approached by Alan fish, he explained that he needed to drive some posts, in a restricted access, undulating site. He indicated that he had a 1.5t Mini Digger available and also that due to the ground conditions, whichever tool he purchased, would need to be both light and powerful!

I indicated that I could offer suitable hammers, with driving cups, either with traditional top mounts, additional bottom mounts or a Breaker modified to bottom bracket mount only. Alan chose the latter option, which gave him the reach and height he needed- whilst keeping the weight down: A 5” bore Cup was supplied.

Alan is most impressed by the work rate of this machine; We have also drawn his attention to a range of Breakers we have available for the heavier work, This includes quite a wide range- right up to, Hammers on a 13t Machine- to be used for knocking in full length telegraph poles.

now, which I bought new in 2007 from Tunstall Tractors which works perfectly with the post knocker; I had a Lamborghini model before then which was also a really good machine.” Recently, Alan made another addition to his machinery collection, he approached machine developer Paul Peacock, who created a modified concrete breaker, tailor-made for Alan’s work: “When the attachment arrived I was instantly impressed; It works in a different way to anything I’ve ever used before, instead of knocking posts in it vibrates the wood down, which can be much more efficient. It’s a very impressive tool and I think I’ll get a lot of use from it.”

The dreaded recession that is now slowly dying down, fortunately never affected Alan; “If you listen to what the media tell you would never leave the house because you’d be frightened to death to get any work. If you want to work and you’re good at your job you’ll get work,” he insists. “Take this job for instance; it wasn’t necessarily big to begin with, I was initially asked to replace 300 metres of old, damaged fencing, but it’s now escalated to 1,100 metres of stock netting fencing around this tenanted farm land and near the woodland that surrounds the Eccup Reservoir.”

Vandgard is made of BS6082 Aluminium alloy and doesn’t rust, even in marine conditions; It stays a clear visual warning, safe and structurally sound for all its life .

The corrosivity of our atmosphere shows especially in built up areas, and means that in most locations galvanised wire has a life of about 6 years, whereas Vandgard is virtually inert. Vandgard will stay bright and corrosion free for far more than 40 years, and in many cases will outlast the fence it is mounted on.

Durable and easy to install, Vandgard provides an inexpensive,

Pioneering Suffolk farmer Julian Swift has joined the board of Eastern Machinery Ring (EMR) . His appointment was announced at EMR’s annual general meeting which was held recently at the Claas Conference Centre in Saxham near Bury St Edmunds .

Mr Swift of Belchamp farm Services, farms 4,800 acres – mainly under contract farming agreements – in an area known as The Belchamps,

just south of Sudbury. He formed the contract company in 1988 with his cousin Charles Raymond covering 1,000 acres and has built the business through innovative husbandry and shrewd machinery investments.

He joins six directors headed by chairman Robert Alexander.

“Julian is an excellent addition to the board. His front line machinery

experience is invaluable and he will strengthen the ring’s presence in the southern part of our region.”

EMR covers Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Lincolnshire. Not distracted by commodity trading or other add-ons, it is a dedicated machinery ring working for its members as a pro-active service rather than a reactionary ‘fire engine service’. Benefits go way

beyond the considerable reduction in overheads. Currently, the ring is meeting demands at a rate of more than 95%.

The MagnaLatch® ‘Side Pull’ general-purpose gate latch offers a low-cost and reliable latching solution for many gates around homes and gardens .

When D&D Technologies first devised the concept of magnetically triggered gate latch it developed the Side Pull’s shape and design, and there are now three models of the MagnaLatch.

Powered by super-strong “permanent magnets”, which never lose their power, all latches incur no mechanical interference to closure, offering a high degree of reliability, safety, and, in some instances, child resistance.

The Side Pull “Series 2” model now

offers up to 10mm (3/8”) of vertical adjustment, as well as 10mm (3/8”) of horizontal adjustment. This is a convenient improvement over the original Series 1. This added adjustability makes the latest version very easy to install, and it also easily adapts to left or right-hand hinged gates.

The Side Pull model is one of three Magna-Latch models designed for different applications. While the bigger Top Pull and Vertical Pull are key lockable and offer an inherently higher level of child resistance, the Side Pull does not carry a key lock feature. Thus it is an inexpensive solution that has proved extremely

the effectIVe entRY to mAGnetIc GAte lAtches

popular for general-purpose gates.

All MagnaLatch models overcome the traditional latch problems of rust, binding, sagging, bending and staining. Despite some potential dimensional limitations (e.g. gate-to-post gap), the Side Pull can be mounted to any type of gate or fence material.

Due to fencing contractor demand in the USA and Australasia, D&D Technologies is currently developing a “lockable” version of its top-sellng

MagnaLatch Side Pull. As with all of D&D Technologies’ products, the MagnaLatch® ‘Side Pull’ is backed by a Lifetime Warranty.

FARM AND COUNTRY FENCINGAND WISH THEM CONTINUED SUCCESS FOR THE FUTURE

You would think that after living and working in New Zealand for over two years, the prospect of returning home to rainy England isn’t the most inviting one . But for Chris Burton, founder of Farm and Country Fencing, absence certainly did make the heart grow fonder .

“I was a shepherd at Brooksby agricultural college for a number of years and as I worked my way up through the rankings, I ended up as a farm manager. But I didn’t want to work for somebody else for the rest of my life, so I decided to go to New Zealand for a couple of years where I worked on a 600-herd dairy farm. I had worked in fencing over here before hand, but I fancied a challenge.”

Once Chris made the long journey back to Leicester, the offers for more fencing work came flooding in and he made the daunting decision to start up a business from scratch: “As soon as I came back I was inundated with

potential jobs, so in 2006 I decided to remortgage my house, buy my first ever tractor and really get things moving. Although I knew it was the right thing to do, I was unsure whether I should take the fencing work on or go back into shepherding.”

As a farmers son, Chris was perhaps more comfortable working with animals than he was with timber posts, but after teaching himself how to fence, primarily stock-fence, the transition seemed natural to him: “I knew that it was for me and I have worked really hard; I mean I’ve ate, breathed and slept it. Where fencing is concerned if you’re smart enough and you put the work in there is always a margin, but in farming there isn’t always that guarantee, and unless you’re a farmer yourself or you inherit a farm, to actually own one is such a hard route to go down.”

farm and County fencing, caters, as you’d expect, mainly within the agricultural fencing market but that

doesn’t mean that Chris isn’t willing to delve into other forms of the trade, he tells us: “Although the name is what it is, I’ve begun to do more work on the commercial and industrial side of things; doing security palisades and what not. But my main work does come from stock netting, post and rail, and deer netting.”

As a self-proclaimed ‘outdoor person’, Chris admits that the more remote the job, the better: “I love being out in the open all day, especially now I have all this kit with me, which means that I can get a job done as quickly and efficiently as possible, efficiency is key.”

The ‘kit’ Chris so modestly refers to is in fact quite an impressive collection of machinery which includes a brand new quad bike, a fairbrother Kinghitter post knocker and a Protech tracked post knocker, amongst others. And as an avid fan of machinery, Chris already has his eye on a fairbrother model that is yet to be sold in Britain:

“fairbother’s new series four Post Pumper is one that I’m keen to get a look at, but at the moment they’ve only marketed it in New Zealand I think. I’m in quite a good position at the minute though, every piece of kit I’ve bought has been self funded and paid for in full; If I want anything, I’ll always wait until I’ve earned it. Looking at my machinery now gives me a really massive sense of achievement.”

After spending tens of thousands of pounds on his beloved machinery, Chris now secures consistent work and has over three months worth of fencing lined up for the near future: “I do a lot for land owners and various associations, and hopefully that will lead to a year’s contract for me.”

Not bad for a self-taught, one man band.

Westbank Timber has strengthened their growing portfolio of products and services with recent additions; having listened to feedback from customers and tailoring the business around their needs .

It has become apparent that Westbanks range of off the shelf products is simply not enough in the current market, traditionally they only offered a delivery service from stock but have now installed a range of machinery at their own terminal in Riga which allows them to process goods to suit the customer’s requirements.

Westbank Timber now have a forward order service available, which includes drilling, mortising, scarfing, cross cutting and notching. In addition they have their own treatment tanks to ensure the timber is treated to the appropriate specifications. Kiln drying facilities are located on site, allowing the company to offer these products treated and kiln dried with a 15year service life guarantee.

Those customers with their own treatment facilities may wish to have packs with 100% redwood, which has been kilned to below 28% moisture for them to treat in their own tanks. Pressure creosote and brown pressure treatment is now also available on forward order.

Westbank’s campaign to raise the profile of UC4 class 15 year guaranteed timber has been a resounding success with many customers now taking regular deliveries, they are now holding a limited range of ex stock which will expand as more people make the choice to switch to a product which will avoid premature failures. This has been subject to a lot of trade press yet still there are some companies offering a guarantee on products which have no tractability, Westbank brands each and every piece of UC4 timber so it can be clearly identified in the unlikely event of a problem.

Customers can take advantage of the multidrop service and have as

Westbanks ever growing range of products has now been expanded for the 2010 season with new panels, planters, garden buildings, field gates and reclaimed sleepers. The company’s three storage terminals are perfectly located to

service the entire country; with all of this available from one supplier on a small regular delivery, Westbank really can assist merchants in keeping stock levels low and allowing you to expand your product range with minimal outlay.

industry update

encoURAGInG neWs In the UK fencInG IndUstRY – BUt not foR eVeRYoneIn encouraging news for the UK Fencing industry, 176 of the top 763 companies in the market are growing at more than 10% per annum and making healthy profits . However, according to industry analysts Plimsoll, while many of these companies are breaking new ground and leading a sustainable recovery in the market, there are 58 other companies whose headline grabbing sales growth masks something much more sinister .

David Pattison, senior analyst and author of the new Plimsoll Analysis explains, “firstly, it makes a nice change to have some positive news to report. 176 growing, increasingly profitable companies have either tapped into a new, fast growing revenue streams or are just the best performers in the old ones. Anyone

struggling to make the most of the recovery should look at these companies and ask themselves ‘what do these guys sell, make or do differently to me?’”

However, Pattison warns that there are 58 companies achieving this eye catching sales growth but their profitability tells a very different story, “Essentially there are 2 types of growth in the market – Good v Bad. 58 companies have achieved over the 10% sales growth but in doing so have seen their profit margin collapse. They are simply overtrading. The accolades of growth are all well and good but the bills need paying too. More worrying, 3 of these companies have been loss making for 2 years – even with double digit sales growth I doubt they will make it to a third”.

On the subject of companies getting it wrong at both ends of the scale, Pattison offers this warning, “While the market continues to recover and the 176 top performers show the way, there are 122 companies facing a very bleak future indeed. Losing sales, profits and probably most of their remaining options, these companies have been rated as Danger in our report. Time is running out and only a takeover or a rapid turnaround is likely to redeem their situation”.

The new Plimsoll Industry Analysis – fencing will tell you instantly which companies are prospering in the post recession market place, those taking a big gamble and those heading for trouble. It gives an instant performance rating on the top 763 companies in the market

and an overview of which companies are ripe for acquisition and who is set to be buying. Each company is assessed using the Plimsoll Model - A graphical and written analysis that lays bare the facts and gives you instant opinion.

WE ARE PLEASED TOP BE ASSOCIATED WITH

A. J. GRIFFITHS FENCING CONTRACTORS

AND WISH THEM CONTINUED SUCCESS FOR THE FUTURE

fRom hedGes to fencesAntonY GRIffIths tells fencInG neWs ABoUt WhY And hoW hIs BUsIness hAs chAnGedSince we last saw Antony of Ledbury-based AJ Griffiths, he was spending much of his time hedge-laying and working on hedge restoration . But a lot can change in three years, as he’s demonstrated by his transition of skills from hedges to fences .

“Deciding to fence full-time was one of my best decisions yet. I was fed up of getting black thorn stuck into me and brambles punching holes through my ears”, but it would seem that Antony’s fate as a fencer was decided back in 2003 when he first set up business.

“Before I started out being self-employed I spent some time in New Zealand working as a silage contractor. It rained constantly so we ended up doing fencing work instead – and once I’d come back to the UK, word got around and offers of work started pouring in.”

A qualified tree surgeon and hedge-layer, Antony now specialises in agricultural fencing, with a little bit of domestic on the side when required by any of his customers. Working on the premise that ‘it’s better to do one thing well than lots of things averagely’, in a short space of time he’s become highly-regarded in the industry for doing a good job at a fair price.

Indeed, Antony’s latest project has proved he’s really upped his game. Working on his own, he’s currently in the middle of installing 8000m of badger fencing on an alpaca farm in Bratton, Wiltshire. With the fencing delving 12’ into the ground, being turned out at 6’ and topped off with electric run on a mains energiser (“they don’t just dig, they climb”), there’s no way any black and white furry things will be getting in from any angle.

“There is a big TB problem in this area, so farmers are anxious to keep them out”, Antony tells me. And with the alpaca farm Antony is working on being home to one of the most prized herds in the country, their owners are right to be investing in Antony’s services.

Having been staying on-site in his caravan for three weeks, and still with some stretch do go, Antony is clearly dedicated to the job, with a sense of pride in doing things properly and reaping the rewards of recommendation and repeat work.

“There are a lot of cowboys out there” he tells me, “so as long as I continue to provide the right job at the right price, we’ll be set to continue and hopefully grow a little in the years that come.”

Using only redwood home-grown

timber and the best quality wire, each of AJ Griffiths jobs are assured with confidence. Now employing another team of two, Antony works from his 8-acre site in Ledbury where he was born and raised but is happy to go wherever the work takes him.

His eagerness for new business has led Antony to a fair few interesting jobs, with one of his favourites being at Alney Island in Gloucestershire: “Traditionally, the area was a wetland for ground-nesting birds and grazing Gloucester cattle, until it was drained in 19th century and used as a Victorian landfill, a powerstation and as a site for the Royal Agricultural Show. With the council having recently decided to break the drain, reclassify the land as coastal marsh and reinstate the cattle, I was asked to install a variety of kinds of fencing – it’s been one of my most extensive projects yet.”

With big plans in store for his business, Antony looks set to be involved in even more projects of this size: “My website is currently being developed, I’ve just brought a new Land Rover and I’m also hoping to add a new postrammer to the collection of machinery which includes a Mercedes Unimog and other low-ground pressure postdriving equipment.”

“I want to keep going and continue to enjoy my job and providing value for money. People that work with the attitude of getting rich aren’t going to, I’d rather provide a good service and continue filling up the order book!”

Husqvarna, the global leader in outdoor power equipment launches an innovative VIP service centered on profitable performance . The ‘Husqvarna Performance Programme’ delivers a premium after sales service for 3 years and is available to customers when purchasing the rotary front mower PT 26D .

At the heart of the programme is ensuring peace of mind for all PT 26D users. from time to time unexpected costs can arise for general maintenance and repair. This new method reduces these by maximising uptime through a one off, fixed fee and provides VIP service at all times.

In addition to having a locally skilled Husqvarna maintenance team on hand to service the machines, customers themselves receive training in elementary maintenance, so they can help keep their machines in tip top shape, boosting productivity.

PlAn YoUR PItstoPs & IncReAse YoUR PRofItABIlItY!

The cornerstone of this idea is the Maintenance Plan which has been carefully planned to track at various intervals which parts of the machine need servicing. Those signed up to Performance Programme will receive 30 hours of service work over 3 years (or 2000 hours, whichever comes first.) furthermore, all labour, spare parts and consumables outlined in the service plan are included thus prolonging the machine’s life.

The Husqvarna Web Portal will

assist businesses large and small by giving subscribers their own digital service book and login, hosted via the Husqvarna service portal on the internet. Its cutting edge method keeps up to date with the machine’s current detailed information. It provides a variety of options such as current contract status and all machinery history regarding services and repairs. It also sends automatic reminder emails to both the user and dealer prompting them when it’s time for the next planned service.

All Husqvarna products are sold exclusively by qualified servicing dealers, many of who have worked professionally in forest, park and garden-related jobs. This guarantees that customers always receive the expert assistance they require, when buying a product as well as when needing service or repairs.

Wood-Mizer UK will discount its standard length, DoubleHard band saw blades by 20% during April, May and June alongside a Europe-wide launch of a new extra sharp blade by the parent company .

The discount is the first of a series of offers this year in which the British branch cuts the price of one product or service by 10% and subsequently by 20% to celebrate Wood-Mizer Industries’ 20th anniversary of production in Europe.

At the same time it further enhances its website with a customer feedback form and 24/7 online parts request facilities. following extensive talks with a number of owner/operators over the last few months the British operation has also appointed a new Scottish agent.

The new Stellite-tipped blade

stays sharp longer when cutting; called RazorTip, it is the latest result of continuing research and development by Wood-Mizer, the sole sawmill manufacturer making its own blades.

Wood-Mizer’s new Scottish agent is Gary Dennis, 36, from Colliston Castle, Angus where he runs his own marquee company and contract sales for another marquee firm. Of the approximately 1,000 Wood-Mizer band sawmills operating in the British Isles, 250 of them are in Scotland and Gary comments: “That’s disproportionate to Scotland’s population but reflects the opportunities and enthusiasm for Wood-Mizers over the border and notwithstanding post recession difficulties I sense increased interest and take-up of our mills this year.”

company profile

In many ways Bentinck Fencing is the product of TR Smith and Sons Ltd, a company which was founded by Richard Smith’s parents in the early eighties . Although TR Smith and Sons dealt in fencing to a certain extent it was primarily focused within the fabrication and building trades, and so Richard saw an opportunity to develop an entirely new sister company .

Bentinck fencing was born in 1995 and sits comfortably across two sites in Nottinghamshire; the first site, which also incorporates Richard’s skip hire company, is based in Sutton-in-Ashfield and the second in neighbouring village Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

fencing News visits Managing Director Richard Smith at the latter site, one which not only houses an impressive manufacturing factory but a beautifully constructed wooden office which was built by Richard himself. He tells us more about the

company’s origins: “Initially, we only worked from the Sutton yard, but in 1995 we bought this second plot. It was basically a wreck then. We had this factory built in 2004 after it stood empty for several years; it has since been a real success for us. To begin with we wanted to put the skip hire yard down here, but we didn’t manage to get the planning approved, so we went on to build the factory you see today.”

Richard runs the company alongside his sem-retired father and a team of twelve Men. At one stage he employed 20 workers, but after the economical climate took a turn for the worst over recent years, Richard knew that development and diversity within the company was necessary: “My turnover for the first two years after the Sutton yard was built was exceptionally good, but things began to gradually drop off and I knew that we needed to start bringing in different areas of trade. The fencing and shed

market has, and always will be a summer trade; it’s never been busy in the winter. We included the skip hire, roofing and building side of things to accommodate those unavoidable quieter months.”

To expand the company further, Richard decided to stock KDM products in early 2007; in that year Bentinck fencing bought around £25,000 worth of stock from them and in 2009 Richard estimates that number to have risen to around £55,000, proving that things are indeed, on the up. Although Richard admits that KDM wasn’t perhaps the cheapest option, he has nothing but positive things to say about their service: “They’re so reliable; when you want something, it is always available to you, without fail. At our Sutton yard, we now incorporate a small KDM showroom, so people can see exactly what they’re getting before they commit to buy. We find that the more products we have on show, the more we sell. You can show a customer any number of brochures, but it’s not like seeing the real thing.”

Like many well-established fencing contractors, Richard has been in the trade for as long as he can remember, he tells us: “I’ve never wanted to do anything else, to be honest I’ve never known anything else. I’ve accomplished so much here, but of all my achievements I’m most proud of having built this factory from nothing.”

On site, Richard and his team manufacture garden buildings and fence panels, as well as operating a sawmill. They offer new and existing customers a free quotation

service and can also cater for small landscaping projects. “We can see a job through from the quotation stage, right through to the fitting itself. We have two delivery vehicles and two fitting vehicles so we are more than capable to tackle any large job. Our range of garden sheds, which are often our most popular products, are sold at Reg Taylor Garden Centre in Southwell, Nottinghamshire, which means that more and more customers are accessible to us.”

Where business is concerned, there’s very little that Richard doesn’t know; the pride he has for his company is clear for all to see and it transcends through to the work he does. He tells us: “I’m in this for the long term. If you set up a business nowadays and think in five years I’ll be in and out, it just won’t work. You have got to dedicate at least 20 years of your life if you want to be a successful within the fencing industry.”

That is exactly what Richard has done, and the proof is very much in the pudding.

The Chalk Pit Lade Wood Hill Doddington Kent ME9 0ED

Each spring the Torry Hill woodlands are an amazing and captivating display of bluebells . The bluebell is a species traditionally associated with managed ancient woodland, particularly those that have been regularly coppiced . Coppicing is the oldest form of woodland management and the regular cutting and regrowth creates a habitat where bluebells and other wildlife can thrive .

The Torry Hill estate consists of 1,000 acres of beautiful woodland near Doddington, Kent. The coppiced timber is used to make the large range of chestnut fencing products that Torry Hill Chestnut fencing produces and supplies to its large client base. This outlet for the timber ensures that the woodlands are managed and the bluebells flourish. Customers of Torry Hill Chestnut fencing know that they are buying a well made traditional product and at the same time are

helping to preserve the bluebells.

“Bluebells are the most iconic plant in the Torry Hill chestnut woods,” said John Leigh-Pemberton, owner of Torry Hill Chestnut fencing. “In April and May newly cut cants are a carpet of blue with hundreds of flowers per square metre. The beautiful flowers and wildlife that, quite literally come to life after the coppicing process, are a sign that timber harvesting can truly benefit woodland.”

According to Canterbury Cathedral’s records, by the year 1200 there were already large areas of chestnut coppice in Kent, and the 1801 Ordnance Survey map shows outlines for the Torry Hill woodlands similar to those of today; evidence of hundreds of years of continuous traditional management.

The chestnut coppicing industry expanded during the 19th Century due to a huge demand for hop poles

from the brewing industry and more recently the Torry Hill woods were much improved in the first half of the 20th century by Douglas Leigh-Pemberton. He set about improving the woodlands by removing most of the ‘standard’ trees, ‘working over’ the woods by removing other species to make stands of pure

chestnut and planting up gaps to create the tightly stocked woods that now produce a high number of very straight poles per acre.

Equally the New brochure which doubles as a useful Wall chart to display in stockist’s premises has also proved to be a great success. The Wall chart reflects the revised Wayland range which features only proven sellers so important in avoiding cash being tied up in dead stock during the current difficult economic climate. The range includes only quality products such as their Continental panels and market leading Lattice manufactured by their Latvian sister company CED, which is part of the Byko Group.

WHY NOT COMBINE WITH SOFTWOOD PRODUCTS

Continental Wood Products Ltd is one of the largest stockists of Softwood products in the UK. Sourced from our own Sawmills in Estonia, Latvia, and Sweden, we hold a large range of sizes and lengths and offer Kiln Dried, regularised softwood graded to C16/24. Summer Meadow Landscapes has built an impressive reputation in the counties of Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire during the past 12 years . ‘We do pretty much everything in landscaping work,’ says Mark Smith, who started the company on his own following an apprenticeship in landscaping at Moulton College, but which now operates with three men .

Recently Mark won a contract which required over 2000 fence posts and as a result he invested in a Kanga P1 Post Puncher. ‘We needed it particularly because of where we were working. It was in woodland and there was limited space. Up until then we had put in all of our posts manually and had never used a post puncher, but this has helped so much.’ Mark has found that the P1 has been a tremendous asset to the business since purchasing in January and is now utilising the post puncher on many of the smaller jobs his company is undertaking in the area. When he was looking at which machine to

use he was impressed by what the Kanga Post Puncher had to offer. ‘It’s certainly not the cheapest machine on the market but it does the job that we want doing, and it does it very well. It is an extremely well made machine and is very ease to use.’ Mark is also impressed with the service and sales assistance he has received from Kanga. ‘They really couldn’t have been more helpful. I cannot fault either the machine or the people involved with Kanga. I would definitely recommend the P1 Post Puncher to anyone else. The Kanga may not be the cheapest machine around – but I wasn’t interested in buying cheap anyway – it is a tremendous addition to the service we offer and also makes our job less strenuous than it has been in the past.

Bobcat has expanded the selection of attachments for the company’s excavators with the launch of the new TR05 Tilt-Rotator . Part of a complete range of Tilt-Rotator attachments for Bobcat excavators, the TR05 Tilt-Rotator is now approved for use on the Bobcat E32 and E35 excavators . It is accompanied by a wide range of Tilt-Rotator attachments such as grading and digging buckets, cable buckets, asphalt cutters, ripper teeth and hydraulic grabs .

The increased flexibility and versatility at the end of the excavator boom provided by the Tilt-Rotator system with the appropriate attachment helps to maximise excavator productivity in a wider range of applications. The Tilt-Rotator also reduces the time taken on the job as manual labour is virtually eliminated and the number of carrier repositionings is dramatically reduced. In addition, fuel consumption is reduced and

ground disturbance is also kept to a minimum.

The mounting system for the attachment on the Tilt-Rotator is the standard S40 hydraulic quick coupler system with an auxiliary circuit to operate hydraulic attachments such as the grabs. The operator is able to change between non-hydraulic attachments on the Tilt-Rotator by pressing two switches simultaneously in the cab, without having to leave the seat.

Unique Bobcat ‘Plug-and-Play’ System

Bobcat has utilised well-proven ‘Plug-and-Play’ technology from the company’s compact loaders, ensuring maximum precision and efficiency. An ACD (Attachment Control Device), built into the Tilt-Rotator, receives its information from a controller in the machine over a 7-pin connection, the same as that used for ACD-controlled Bobcat loader attachments. The

standard joysticks on the excavator are replaced with dedicated Tilt-Rotator joysticks incorporating all additional functions and allowing the operator to engage or disengage the Tilt-Rotator functions safely and easily.

Unlike other systems on the market, the Tilt-Rotator can be operated

immediately, once the Deluxe Control kit (including the joysticks and controller) has been installed on the excavators. No calibration or fine tuning is needed on the job site.

Head groundsman, Dave Balmer explains how the right equipment for the job is essential for quality pitch maintenance: “Maintaining a Premiership rugby pitch requires a lot of hard work, so

with this in mind, I immediately contacted Richard Phelps at Buckland Garden Machinery, our local Kubota dealership, to see if he could help. It quickly became apparent that the STV36 compact tractor was perfect for our requirements.”

Kubota’s Tractor & Groundcare Division recently celebrated 30 years in the UK and Ireland. Throughout this period it has remained at the forefront of the market for compact tractors and ride-on mowers, as well as being the global leader in the sub 50hp tractor sector.

Thanks to the unique new Selectable Joystick Control (SJC) option, the Bobcat T110 now offers a top speed of 13 .5 km/h, making it the fastest compact tracked loader in this class on the market .

55% higher than that in the single speed system, the new top speed is part of a two-speed option offered by the SJC system, allowing for faster cycle times between dig and dump sites as well as speedier transit from one jobsite to another. In addition, a speed management system (SMS) allows the operator to match travel speed to job requirements in order to optimise attachment performance and provide even more precise control of machine movements in tight areas.

The SMS can be used to pre-set the speed desired when working with specific attachments such as tillers and trenchers.

The SJC system provides easy front auxiliary hydraulics operation with a choice between variable flow, allowing for slow-to-fast movement of auxiliary hydraulic functions, and continuous flow, which allows for a constant flow of auxiliary hydraulic oil to an attachment. The SJC system also has a float feature for levelling the ground surface.

Ian Oulton and David Smith founded ID Fencing in 2005 when they were in their early twenties; after sacrificing their secured and well-paid jobs at another fencing firm, to go into business together and begin their exciting, and yet somewhat daunting journey .

In just five years, however, the pair has managed to outdo the majority of their local competitors, and secure bigger and more varied work. David tells us about their largest job to date: “We’ve got an ongoing contract with GR Pykett Ltd who sell agricultural tractors; they bought a 180 acre farm a couple of years ago and we’ve done all the fencing work on that and will be carrying out the next stage in the very near future.”

After growing up on his family’s farm, Ian had always expected to one day run it himself, but admits that: “The

some days we’ll be out for 7 o’clock but we wont be getting back till half 7 at night and we’ve still got prices to sort out when we get home on top of it all. Hopefully in 5 or 10 years we can take a more directorial role and sit back knowing that it has all stemmed from our manual work in these early years, which will undoubtedly give us a bigger sense of achievement.”

That sense of achievement is once again certified by the consistent amount of work the company continues to secure. And when asked about the recession the pair are surprisingly upbeat; “We haven’t experienced many problems,” Ian explains, “A lot of people who I spoke to in the building and joinery trade have been out of work and have been hit the hardest. As soon as the recession came about and everyone started panicking about being laid off and what not, our industry seemed to go mad. I mean we had five or six calls everyday to go out and look at a job. And usually three out of five of those jobs we would end up doing because we price things reasonably.”

Both Ian and Dave have done an NVQ Level 2 in fencing and are currently doing the level 3 course. James Burton who they have employed for 2 days a week over the last year, in-between his studies at college, will hopefully be employed full-time in the

very near future and will be studying his Level 2 NVQ very shortly.

So what is next for ID fencing? “Where work is concerned we’re going to be starting a job at Ecton, near Hartington, for Natural England soon,” said Dave. “But on a more personal level we’re hoping to constantly expand; we want to set more people on and get to a point where we can send other men out to look at a job and we can become more office based.”

If the last five years are anything to go by, those dreams will very soon, be a reality.

money just wasn’t there, there’s plenty of work involved but not enough money. I had always wanted to do it, but I knew it wouldn’t have paid like the fencing work.”

ID fencing now deals in various types of fencing; from domestic panels, to security wire meshing and are highly

recommended within the agricultural equine division. Ian and David have also incorporated landscaping into the business, as well as a small amount of forestry work. Just last year, they began selling logs locally and have since built up a strong customer base. David explains: “The logs are cut from what has been ripped out from a forestry job. We’re hoping in the future to build a big storage shed for that side of the business and if the popularity of the logs continues to grow, I expect we’ll need to employ someone solely for that purpose.”

Now at just 29 and 27 years of age, Ian and David are able to enjoy the luxury of working for themselves, although they do insist its not all play, David admits: “Everyone thinks its easier, but you do need to put the work in, or you wont reap any benefits; we both work really hard,

Barry and Neil Thompson are like most siblings; they look alike, they sound alike and they have the same work ethic when it comes to business; their business .

Thompson fencing Services Ltd (TfS) are a specialist-fencing contractor, specialising in the supply and installation of timber and steel fencing products; from small-bespoke domestic work to large commercial contracts. Eldest brother Barry explains a bit about their history; “Initially we started with just timber fencing in the neighbouring yard, but we’ve progressed greatly since then, we now deal with steel & timber fencing, sheds, decking and all levels of security fencing.”

The company was established over thirty years ago, but really began to expand in the early nineties when it introduced steel fencing onto it’s ‘to do’ list. Since then the business has propelled into to a widely regarded, highly recognised sub-contractor.

“The majority of our work comes from

so mUch moRe thAn BRotheRlY loVelUcIe cARteR meets WIth the thomPson fencInG seRVIces to heAR moRe

“By completing the questionnaire, it shows that our company is completely competent in all areas; that we have no reservations and maintain strong health and safety regulations, quality assurance, equal opportunities-everything really” Neil Explained, “This applies to most major business nowadays too”.

The brother’s council work is pivotal for the companies marketing and advertising, Barry explains more, “Our ongoing council work has been very beneficial for us as well as the LA’s we work with. Using Supply Chain Management systems (SCM’s), we have sustained our existing customers over a very long period of time. As a company we are known to be reliable and trustworthy, we always finish a job on time, which is obviously imperative in any contract work. Especially when this kind of work can get a bad reputation at times with the ‘two men in a white van’ stereotype, an assumption we of course want to get rid of through our ongoing professional work ethic.”

One thing the brothers insist on agreeing on is the standard of their work, especially where their timber is concerned; “The CCA ban on arsenic never really affected us; we only ever use fSC treatment which is a friendly treatment because there’s no acid in it, it’s not harmful to the product and ensures higher quality. Importantly, it’s also environmentally friendly, as is the timber, which is from Sourced Timber Products. We don’t really store the timber for long either, we buy in from Scotland and the turn around is usually about six weeks.”

The word ‘expansion’ is never far from the brothers’ lips, in fact it’s high on their list of priorities, “We would love to expand the company which will require investment” says

Barry, “Over the next year and half we want to really grow. Meaning that we would have to increase the number of staff we employ and the facilities we have on site. New tendering methods such as e-tendering can provide us with a platform for expansion and can also help form partnerships with construction companies to whom we can offer a competitive and high quality service on larger bids. The recent investment in Hull for the BSf programme for example offers further opportunities for growth.”

TfS Ltd currently cover over a hundred mile radius, stretching as far as Nottingham but both brothers feel the need to work further a field; “We are actually widening our scope at the minute as well as bringing in new staff with new ideas and ambitions to help drive the company forward in the present market. Due to our high standards and reputation with a large portfolio of customers we can rely greatly on positive word mouth from our existing clients accompanied with our excellent local reputation” said Neil, “Ours is an independent company, which we have long preferred, now as the market evolves and tendering becomes more internet based however, TfS are always looking to merge/partner with a number of construction companies to help deliver on large projects”.

large companies such as Hobson and Porter Builders, Kier, Connaught and Kingston Works Ltd”, said Neil, “Recently however, we’ve been dealing primarily with City Councils including Kirklees, Leeds, Bradford and Barnsley. To carry out work for the council, you must complete an in depth PPQ (Pre-Qualification Questionnaire) and fulfil all the requirements.”

So what exactly does this involve?

We work in an age-old industry, and it’s rare to meet someone who’s found a way of moving with the times and really doing things differently – but in Stuart Bonomy, we’ve found such a man .

With a family heritage in timber, Stuart decided to turn 85 year-old ‘Channel Woodcraft Ltd’ into something exciting that would make the competition with other merchants much easier to win.

“I first got the idea for Timberclick when I started researching an ecommerce site. I realised there was a gap in the market and as there were no other online timber merchants, I decided we’d be the first.”

Now into its fourth year, Stuart’s business continues to boom, he tells me, “We started out running the business from our base in folkestone Kent, but we soon started getting enquiries for products outside the South-East – so the next stage of development was to set up relationships with partnering merchants in other areas, so that they could process orders online and

we could service those orders.” from then on, the online business has grown, and although the company continues to operate as a traditional merchant, servicing online orders and local trade and retail customers, their bread and butter work comes through Timberclick’s online service.

So, what makes online trading so special? “People are using the internet more and more for shopping – it’s easier, it’s less hassle and for people who find walking into a trade environment when they don’t know much about what they want, they can avoid the embarrassment. With Timberclick, people can have a look at what we’ve got, do a bit of research and buy products all from the comfort of their own home”, Stuart tells me.

It’s easy to see why Stuart has such confidence in his enterprise, offering a unique service and being one of the most prominent online timber merchants in the UK.

Timberclick’s main products are landscaping materials such as

tImBeR’s JUst A clIcK AWAY!VIctoRIA PoolmAn tAlKs to md stUARt BonomY ABoUt hIs neW WAY of tRAdInG

decking, timber and fencing, though the company sells a lot of materials used for constructing sheds, such as claddings and timbers for framing. Mind you, Stuart’s got no plans to start diversifying right, left and centre “we do what we’re good at, what we know so won’t start selling any old thing.”

So many of us feel a huge sense of achievement when we launch our first website but nowadays, having one just isn’t enough. To impress potential customers it needs to be informative, attractive – and most importantly, up to date. With his website being the be-all and end-all of his business, Stuart has taken measures to ensure that his site is continually maintained and updated:

“Since the development of the website began back in 2006, we’ve made many changes, constantly evolving to make sure that it functions in the best way possible, it’s a full-time job. from the way it looks and how it’s presented, to the way it’s marketed as well as the mix of product we have online it all has to be current.”

And it’s not just the website which has to be maintained, with a considerable amount of investment going to updating modern plant and technology, as well as a working sawmill – not to mention having to barter with prices

and ensure that all timber is from a sustainable source.

Owned by a combination of forces from Channel Woodcraft Ltd, Juha Holopainen of Juha.Co.Uk Ltd and new partner Simon Lawson of Lawson’s Timber Merchants in London, there’s a hugely supportive network in place for anyone who wants to get onboard - the latest of which is Newport-based Monmouthshire Timber, who are about to launch their new online store.

There are many parts of the timber industry that remain stuck in the dark ages. And while it’s wonderful to see businesses that have been going for decades, even centuries, many do a great job but fall by the wayside by failing to get themselves ‘out there’. Stuart sets an example in that you can maintain all the integrity and morals that come with tradition, but if there’s one thing for sure, it’s that there is a new way to trade as Stuart says, “Ecommerce is the future”.

ConFor discussed a fresh approach to forestry with Huw Irranca-Davies, MP, England’s minister for forestry, on a visit to Pontrilas sawmill .

Rupert Pigot, Confor’s head of policy said: “The minister understands that forests and wood can play an important role in a low-carbon economy, and we discussed how that can be maximised at a time of shrinking public expenditure.”

High on the agenda was how reducing the regulatory burden on forestry and stimulating markets can help deliver new planting of productive conifer and hardwood forests, and support truly sustainable forest management. Linked to this was the need to ensure that wood is utilised for its greatest carbon and jobs benefit.

Rupert and Edward Hickman, chief executive of Pontrilas Timber highlighted the need to make best use of the resource that we have: “We need action to bring more woodland into management, to encourage the greater use of wood in construction

A fResh APPRoAch to the mInIsteR

and to deliver increased new planting through a simplified regulatory system”, said Edward.

The meeting with the minister was one in a series of meetings with key politicians ahead of the forthcoming general election. They provide the opportunity to set out the policy direction Confor would like to see from the next parliament and to highlight the present concerns of the industry.

Nobel Peace-Prize winning charity MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is offering adventurous fundraisers the chance to experience world-famous landscapes and have a direct impact on the lives of landmine survivors .

In November 2010 MAG will be taking a team of people to Cambodia where, after a few days trekking through the jungle on Kulen Mountain and taking in the ancient site of Ankor Wat, their real challenge begins. Participants of MAG’s Community Challenge Cambodia 2010 will then spend four days building a house for a family in a small village in Siem Reap province, one of the most heavily landmine-contaminated areas of the country.

Lisa french, herself a survivor of an explosion after being injured on the Tavistock Square bus targeted in the 7/7 attacks, also supported MAG by taking part in last year’s event; “Community Challenge Cambodia was the most remarkable experience of my life, and such a privilege to be involved in a project that really changes the lives of Cambodians affected by the horrific injuries caused by landmines,” Lisa said.
