German and European Studies The Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies promotes the study of modem and contemporary German and European affairs by a new generation of North American scholars. The Program supports scholars in anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, cultural studies and all germane fields, includmg histori- ans working on the period since the mid-19th century. It accepts applications from US and Canadian nationals or permanent residents who are full-time graduate students in the social sci- ences and humanities and who have completed all coursework required for the PhD. US and Canadian PhDs who have received their doctor- ates within the past two calendar years are also elqgble. Awards provide 9-12 months of research support in Berlin with a stipend of DM 2,000 per month. Community Forwtry The Ford Foundation’s US Community Forestry Research Fellowship Program invites applications for dissertation, masters and pre-dissertation fel- lowships in community forestry. The program supports partiapatory reseaxch in US rural and urban communities with awards of $15,000 for dissertation fellows, $7,000 for masters fellows and $2,000 for pre-dissertation fellows. Appli- cants must be enrolled in a graduatedegree- granting program in the social sciences, econom- ics, forestry, natural resource management or pol- icy and planning and must be engaged in research that deals directly with US forest com- munities. Topics of special interest include sus- tainable praduction and the distribution of forest benefits across diverse cultural and socio-em nomic groups. Fellowships for Minorities Developed by the Ford Foundation to foster diversity in US college and university faculties. Applicants must be citizens or nationals of the US, must belong to one of six minority groups
and must work in research-based fields. For a list of eligible fields, contact the fellowship office. Dissertation Fellowships are awarded to PhD or ScD degree candidates at US institutions. Appli- cants should aspire to teaching and research careers and must not have earned previous doc- toral degrees. Awardees receive a stipend of $24,000 and expenses for attending three Confer- ences of Ford Fellows. Application deadline: Dec I , 2000 for the filst part of the application. Postdoc- toral FeZlowships. Applicants must have earned a PhD or ScD between Jan 8,1994 and Feb 28,2001 and must be engaged in (or planning) a teadung and research career. Comparative Immigration Studies The Center for Comparative Immigration Studies at the U of CaIifomia-San Diego offers Visiting Research Fellowships at the predoctoral and post- doctoral level to be held in residence during the 2001-02 academic year. These awards support advanced research and writing on international migration and &gee flows in any of the social sciences, history, law or comparative literature. They cannot support fieldwork or primary data collection, except field research in the San Diego area. Predoctoral applicants must finish writing

Improving Government The Price Waterhouse Coopers Endowment sup ports research about improving the effectiveness
of government at the federal, state, local and international levels. Grants are offered to individ- uals in universities, nonprofits and journalism to prepare research papers. Grants support researh in “Transforming Public Sector Organizations” and “Redefining Public Service for the 21st Century‘‘ as well as studies of outstanding public sector leaders. Grantees must produce a research report that will be published by the Pricewater- houseCoopers Endowment. They are free to determine the start and end dates of their proj- ects. Languages and Cultures The National security Education Program (NSEP) offers Graduate International Fellowships for study of the languages and cultures of more than 75 countries. Applicants must be US citizens enrolled in or applying to a graduate degree pro- gram in an accredited college or university in the US. Recipients must engage in formal study of a modem foreign language and an area of culture and must agree to a service at a US government agency involved in national security affairs or in US higher education. Awards are made for a min- imum of one and a maximum of six academic semesters (24 months). Support for language or area study coursework in the US is $2,000/semes- ter; overseas study for up to two semesters is a maximum of $10,000 per semester.
