GOSPELOFMARK(2)INTRODUCTIONANDLESSON11In the first ten lessonsof theMark'sGospel study,wewere studying fromchapters1 ‐8:31.BeforewestartthesecondpartoftheGospel,letusthinkagainofsomeofthethingswhichwehavelearnt.The Gospel is the good news about Jesus Christ. After He was baptised, He chose 12disciplestobewithHimandtolearnfromHim.TheytravelledwithHimtothetownsandvillages. Jesus taught them and the people about God. He did miracles, for example,healingsickpeopleandfeedingmanypeoplefromonlya littlefood.AllthepeopleweretalkingaboutHimandquestioninghowHewasabletodothesethings.InMark8:29,Jesussaidtothedisciples,"WhodopeoplesaythatIam?AndwhodoyousaythatIam?"Peteranswered,"YouaretheChrist."HebelievedthatJesuswastheMessiah,theSonofGod.SincethedisciplesnowknewtrulywhoJesuswas,HebegantoteachthemthatHewoulddieonthecross.WelearnaboutthisaswebegintostudythesecondpartoftheGospel.Ifyoudidnotstudythefirstbookof10lessons,itwouldhelpyouifyoureadMark1:1‐8:31beforeyoustartthisstudy.Mark'sGospelisGod'sWord.Asyoustudyit,askGodtoteachyou. LESSON12Mark8:31­9:50 JesusandthecrossAswebeginthesecondpartofMark'sGospel,welearntherealreasonwhyJesuscametothisearth.Themainreasonwasn'ttofeedthehungry,itwasn'ttohealthesick,itwasn'ttobeanexampletousbyHis life,anditwasn'teventoteachthetruth.Hedidallthesethings,butthemainthingHecametodowas,byHisdeathandresurrection,todefeatsin

andSatan.BecausethedisciplesnowunderstoodthatJesuswastheMessiah,HestartedtoteachthemaboutwhatwouldhappentoHim.Hesaid 1. Hewouldsufferalot. 2. LeaderswouldopposeHim. 3. Hewouldbekilled. 4. Hewouldrisefromthedead.PetersaidthatJesusshouldnotdie.ButJesusknewthatthisideacamefromSatan.God'splanforJesuswasHisdeath.JesussaidthatwetoomusttakeupourcrossandfollowHim.Whatisacrossusefulfor?Fordying.Wemustdietoourowndesires.Ifwedothat,wecanlivetopleaseGod.Jesusischanged‐9:1‐8Jesus said to His disciples, "Before you die, some of you will see the glory of God'sKingdom."Sixdays later, forPeter, Jamesand John thiswordwas fulfilled.HavinggonewithJesusupthemountain,theysawHisappearancechange.TheysawMosesandElijahwholivedinOldTestamenttimesastheytalkedwithJesus.TheyheardGod'svoiceasHespoke from heaven. Jesus had begun to prepare Himself for His death, and all thathappenedonthemountainthatdaywouldhavehelpedandstrengthenedHim.Peter was astonished at what happened and he wanted to stay there with Moses andElijah.Butitdidn'thappen.OnlyJesusstayedwiththem.HealoneistheOnewhoneverleavesus.Thereturnfromthemountain‐9:9‐32The prophet Malachi wrote, "I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great anddreadfuldayoftheLordcomes"(Malachi4:5).WhenthedisciplesaskedJesusaboutthis,Heexplainedthat"Elijah"hadalreadycome.HewasspeakingaboutJohntheBaptist,theonesenttopreparethewayfortheLord.Aftertheycamedownthemountain,Jesusandthethreedisciplesmetamanwhosesonwaspossessedby ademon.Theyhad seenwonderful thingson themountain, butnowtheymetdifficultiesandproblemsagain.Sometimesinourlives,wehavetimeswhenwereceive spiritual blessings. But afterwards, problems and difficulties come to us again.Nevertheless,theLordwillnotleaveus,andbyfaith(9:23)andthroughprayer(9:29)wecanreceiveGod'spowerandhelp.ThemanwhohadcometoJesusforhelpknewhisfaithwassmall,andaskedJesustohelphisunbelief(9:24).Butthemainthingisnotthatourfaithisbig,butthatweputourfaithinagreatGodwhoisabletodomorethanwethink.Jesusteaches‐9:33‐50Thediscipleswerequarrellingsaying,"Whoofusisthegreatest?"Jesussaid,"Thepersonwhochoosesthe lowestplaceforhimselfandtheonewhoservesothers isgreaterthanall." He told them that serving even children pleases God (v.36‐37). Added to this HerevealedthattocauseanyonewhobelievesonHimtostumbleisagreatsin.

LESSON13Mark10:1­34 PeoplecometoJesusThePhariseesaskaboutdivorce‐10:1‐9The Pharisees asked about divorce, not because they wanted a good answer to theirquestion,butbecausetheywantedtotestJesus.However,inHisanswerJesustaughtusanecessarylessonaboutmarriage.HerevealedthatGod'splanisthatamanandawomanwhomarrylivetogetheruntildeath.AndHewarnedusthat,becausemarriedpeoplehavebeenjoinedtogetherbyGod(v.9),wemustnotdoanythingtoseparatethem.Thedisciplesaskaboutdivorce‐10:10‐12Thedisciples, thinkingwhat Jesus taughtwas toohard,askedHimabout it.Weneed toreadHisanswerverycarefully.Manypeoplecountdivorceasalightthing,butJesusdidnotteachthat.Therefore,thosewhoarepreparingformarriageneedtoseekGod'swillinprayersothattheynotmakeamistake.ParentsbringtheirchildrentoJesus‐10:13‐16Accordingtothedisciples'opinion,toreceivechildrenwastowastetime.ButJesussaid,"LetthemcometoMe,don'tpreventthem."Evenwhentheyaresmall,childrenneedtocomeneartotheLordJesus.Foralittlechild,tobelieveisnothard,andifweteachhimnowabouttheLord,hecanfollowHimforallofhislife.Youparents,haveyougivenyourchildrenovertotheLord?Doyouprayforthemeveryday?DoyouteachthemabouttheLord?HewantsthemtocometoHimwhiletheyarestillchildren.ButHedoesn'tloveonlythechildrenofbelievers.HewantsotherchildrentocometoHimtoo.Whatcanyoudoforthe children who live around you? He knelt before Him and he called Him "GoodMaster".AlthoughhehadkeptGod'scommandmentseversincehewasachild,heknewhedidnotyethaveeternal life.Buteventhoughhewasagoodmanwithagooddesire,andalthoughhegavehonour to Jesus,hewentawaywithout receivingeternal life.ThereasonwasthathelovedhisrichesmorethantheLord.DoyoulovetheLordJesusmorethananythingelse?Hewantsustohaveeternallife.ThatiswhyHegaveHislifeforus.Healsowantsustobesurethatwehaveeternallife.IfwehavetrustedinHimasourSaviour,weareHis forever,andno‐onecanseparateus fromHim."Igivethemeternal life,andtheyshallneverperish:no‐onecansnatchthemoutofMyhand"(John10:28).The disciples were amazed at what Jesus said about rich people. BartimaeusbelievedthatJesuscouldhealhim.So,althoughpeopletriedtopreventhim,he did not stop calling out to Jesus for help. When he called Jesus "Son of David", heshowed that hebelieved Jesuswas the greatKing, theMessiah.Becauseof his faith, hereceivedtheanswertohisprayer.Ifyouhavereceivedtheanswertoyourprayer,justasBartimaeusfollowedJesusontheroad,soyouneedtofollowHimtoo.ThepeoplepraiseJesus‐11:1‐11Untilnow,JesushadneverletthecrowdshonourHim.ButnowHeletthemwitnesstoHisbeing a king. He sent two of His disciples to bring a young donkey. As they untied thedonkey,perhapsthepeoplewhowerewatchingwouldsay,"Theyarestealingit."Evenso,thedisciplesobeyedJesus'command.Evenifotherpeoplethinkbadthingsaboutus,weshouldalwaysbereadytoobeytheLordJesus.Many people were in Jerusalem for the Passover. They stood on the streets, shoutingpraises to JesusasHerodeon thedonkey into thecity.Theyunderstood thatHewasakinglikeHisancestorDavid.ButtheydidnotunderstandthatHiskingdomwasnotofthisworld.TheythoughtHewouldsavethemfromtheirrulerstheRomans.Jesuscleansoutthetemple‐11:15‐18The Jews came to the temple tobring sacrifices toGod.Theyneeded tobuyanimalsordovestogiveassacrifices.Butthesellersweresellinginsidethetemple.Theywerealsomakingaprofitforthemselvesbyaskinghighprices.Therewereotherstherewhowerechanging the people's money for the special money that was used for offerings in thetemple. JesuswasangrywhenHesawthemdoingthesethingsinGod'shouse.Itshouldhavebeenaholyplace,buttheyhadmadeitlikeamarket.Thefigtree‐11:12‐14,20‐25Becausethefigtreediedsoquickly,Peterwasamazed.Jesussaidthatourprayerswillbeanswered if we have faith. Sometimes the things we ask from God seem as big asmountains.ButnothingisimpossibleforHim.Jesusalsoremindsusthatwhenwepray,weneedtoforgivethosewhohavedonethingsagainstus.Godforgivesusandwemust forgiveotherpeople.Haveyoureceivedtheanswertoyourprayer?Ifyouhave not, ask yourself these two questions, "Is there doubt in my heart? LESSON16Mark12:35­13:37 JesusatthetempleJesusspeaksaboutthereligiousleaders‐12:35‐40TheJewishleadersknewthattheMessiahwouldbebornfromthefamilyofKingDavid.ButbecauseDavidsaid,"TheMessiah ismyLord", it isclearthat theMessiah isgreaterthanDavid.Because the aim of the religious leaders was to get honour and praise for themselves,Jesuswarnedthepeopleaboutthem.Evenreligiouspeoplecanbeproudandselfish.Jesussaidthatsuchpeoplewillbepunished.Thewidow'soffering‐12:41‐44As Jesuswatched the people bringing their offerings at the temple,He saw rich peopleputtinginalotofmoney.ButHesaidtothedisciples,"Thepoorwidowputinmorethananyoneelse".ThereasonHesaidthiswasthat,althoughthemoneyshegavewasonlyasmallamount,sheputineverythingshehad.Therewasnothingleftforherself.GodseesnotonlyhowmuchwegivetoHim,butalsohowmuchwekeepforourselves.DoyougivegenerouslytoGodbecauseyouloveHim?Ordoyoukeepyourmoneybackforyourownbenefit?Jesusteachesaboutthefuture13:1‐37When the disciples spoke about the wonderful temple buildings, Jesus told them theywould all be destroyed. This happened in A.D. 70when enemies of the Jews came anddestroyedthewholecity.Jesustoldthedisciplesaboutthesufferingthatwouldcomeatthat time(v.14‐18).Healsotoldthemaboutthingsthatwouldhappenat theendof theworld.HesaidHewouldreturntothisearthtotakeHispeopletobewithHiminheaven.Before He returns, the gospel must reach to all the peoples of the world. The word"peoples"means, not every person, but every tribe. Until now, the gospel has reachedmanydifferenttribes,buttherearestillmanywhohavenotheard.Inyourcountrytherearethosewhohavenotheard.InordertospeedthedayofHiscoming(2Peter3:12),wemustbringthegospeltothesepeople.Doyouprayforthoseevangelistswhohavegonetothosewhohavenotheardthegospel?Doyoupraythatotherswillbesent?IfGodwillsit,areyouwillingtogoyourself?Doyousupportthisworkbygivingmoney?No‐oneknowswhenJesuswillreturn.ThereforeHetoldusthatwemustalwaysbeready.BecausetheonlyoneswhowillgowithHimarethosewhohavebeencleansedfromtheirsins,weneedfirstofalltotrustintheLordJesuswhodiedonthecrosstosaveus.Areyoucertain that youwill gowithHimwhenHe returns?You canbe certain. LESSON17Mark14:1­42 JesusandthedisciplesAwoman'sgifttoJesus‐14:1‐9Like thewomanwho gave the two small coins in the temple, thiswoman gave all shecould.Thewomaninthetemplewaspoorandgaveallshehad.Thiswomangaveoutofherriches.BothwomenwerepraisedbyJesus.ThereasonthiswomangavetheexpensiveperfumewasthatsheunderstoodthatJesuswassoongoingtodie.ThecustomoftheJewswastopourperfumeonadeadbody.ThiswomandiditforJesusbeforeHedied.Bydoingthis,sheshowedher love.BecausetheLordJesus lovesus,HegaveHis lifewhich isthegreatestgiftofall.Inreturn,wecangiveourcompleteselvestoHim.Judas'betrayal‐14:10‐11JudaswasoneofJesus'closefriends,butnowhebecameHisenemy.Why?Hehadhopedthat Jesus would become a great king in Jerusalem.
