eminent Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma

The Library & Information Centre, Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine, New Delhi organized a Felicitation Ceremony on 16th November 2017 to honor Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma in the Committee Room of the Hqrs., New Delhi.

This felicitation ceremony was in fact a reciprocate gesture of the Library & Information Centre as Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma has donated his precious personal collection of 150 books & journals to the library of the Council.

An old visionary of Unani Medicine, Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma was born in the family of a well known Hakim Chander Muni on 5th January 1931 at Ambala, Punjab. He completed his intermediate, Adeeb Fazil from Punjab University and Diploma in Persian & Arabic language from Delhi University in 1970. He completed Kamil Tibb-o-Jarahat course from Tibbia College, Karol Bagh, New Delhi in 1957. At that time this was the highest degree/diploma course available in Unani system of medicine in Delhi.

Hakim Verma’s glorious career includes various important positions in different organizations. He served Hamdard Dawakhana as Research Assistant from February 1958 to March 1966. He joined Indian National Science Academy (NSA), New Delhi as Senior Research Fellow in 1971 and served there till March 1970. He joined prestigious Institute of History of Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi on 1st April 1971 as Arabic & Persian Scholar and served there till his retirement on 31st January 1989.

Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma attended a good number of National & International Seminars/ conferences in India and abroad and presented research papers. He also attended the first International Conference of Unani Medicine which was organized by Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine, New Delhi and presented an important paper entitled, “Myth of Mughal Princes Jahanara’s Cure: An Exposition”. His research papers have been published in various journals and seminar/ conference proceedings. He has also been members of various important committees and the nominee of President of India in some selection committees.

Speaking on the occasion Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma stressed on the compilation, preservation and translation of important classics of Unani books. He particularly stressed on the translation of Al-Qanoon authored by Ibn Sina. He proudly said that I am fortunate enough that I was the pupil of Hakim Kabeeruddin Sb. He said that today there are many opportunities for the

research and development of Unani medicine. He exhorted the researchers of the Council to work hard and find the cure of deadly diseases.

Delivering the Presidential talk Dr. Anil Khurana, Director Incharge, CCRUM firstly thanked Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma for kindly donating his precious personal collection to the library of the Council. He hoped that researchers of the Council will make full use of these. He further said that we will find out the rare Unani books from his donated books and will digitize to preserve these for posterity.

In the beginning of the programme Dr. Anil Khurana, Director General I/c welcomed Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma by presenting a bouquet of flower. Later on Dr. Khurana also presented a Memento and a Shawl to Hakim Rajinder Lal Verma as a reciprocate gesture from the CCRUM to recognize the contribution of Hakim Verma.

On this occasion Dr. Naheed Parveen, Assistant Director (Unani) and Dr. Amanullah, Research Officer (Unani) expressed their views. The welcome address was presented by Mr. Mohd. Azhar Khan, Assistant Library & Information Officer. The programme was anchored by Mr. Syed Shuaib Ahmad, Library & Information Assistant. The officers and other staff members present in the ceremony wished him a healthy, happy and long life. They also requested him to pen his memories and advises for the researchers of the Unani System of Medicine.
