dian line. US Hwy 61 now inter-sects I-35 in Wyoming, Minnesota, which goes to Canadian border near Grand Portage. At one time, the great River Road covered some 1700 miles before being shortened some 300 miles by I-35.

LA Highway 10, which winds through the Feliciana’s from east to west before crossing the River to New Roads was designated sev-eral years ago as a Louisiana By-Way. Highway 10 has also been designated as the Zachary Taylor Parkway.

“Canada is actually our num-ber one source of international visitors,’’ Bourgeois pointed out. “They like to travel the Great Riv-er Road, which we know as US Highway 61 that connects New Orleans with Canada. The TV real-ity shows, Duck Dynasty in West Monroe, Cajun Pawn Stars in Al-exandria, and Swamp People set in Pierre Part are attracting large numbers of visitors from Canada.’’

The National Scenic Byways Program (NSBP) was established in 1992 by the US Dept. of Trans-portation under the Federal High-way Agency. The mission of the NSBP is to “create a distinctive collection of American Roads, their stories and treasured places.” The Federal Highway Adminis-tration realized what the inter-state system was doing to many small towns and cultural centers in America since so much traffic was bypassing these areas on the inter-state, according to Bourgeois.

There are two designated NSBP

roads in Louisiana, the Great River Road with its route near Zachary and Port Hudson and through St. Francisville; and the Creole Na-ture Trail in Calcasieu and Cam-eron Parishes.

“Poverty Point State Park area has recently been designated as a World Heritage Site. This is the first site in Louisiana to receive this designation. There are only 21 sites in the USA that have received this distinction,’’ Bourgeois, who once worked for the Goudchaux Department Stores noted. “An-other major accomplishment re-cently has been the creation of the Atchafalaya Heritage Area which encompasses all or part of 11 par-ishes.”

“There are 17 Scenic By-Ways designated roads in Louisiana, covering several thousands of miles including the Tunica Trace and the Zachary Taylor Parkway. This program is a partnership be-tween the Office of Tourism, the La Dept. of Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administra-tion,’’ Bourgeois explained. “We also have a very active LA Main Street Program in small cities and towns in Louisiana. One area that has really taken advantage of this program is the town of Minden in Webster Parish. Minden has really become an ongoing destination for many people in northwest Louisi-ana.”

“We have a lot of things going for Louisiana Tourism,’’ Bourgeois elaborated. “First is the people in Louisiana are like no other people with their heritage and culture. The places to see and things to do are totally unique in our state. The mighty Mississippi River is a

huge point of interest especially to international travelers. Our River is one of the great Rivers of the world, if not the greatest. Here in the USA we think about seeing the Amazon and the Nile rivers, but international travelers want to see and experience the mighty Missis-sippi. There is a Steamboat Over-look Program in the works on the River by the Houmas House.”

The culture, heritage and histo-ry of the Feliciana’s, Port Hudson, Plains and Zachary is interwoven due to their proximity to the Big River and destination for settlers going back to colonial times. Di-rectly across the River from our area is another unique cultural and heritage area that is New Roads and all of Pointe Coupee Parish.

Many books and articles have been written about the heritage of Port Hudson, Plains, and Feliciana area for more than a century. Zach-ary is part of this heritage area in that the historic Plains Church and Store were first located on the out-skirts of present day Zachary and the Buehler Cemetery with grave markers dating back to the early 1800’s is still at its original loca-tion on Scenic Highway just north of the intersection of Highway 64.

Writer’s note: It seems that now, more than ever, is the time to profit economically in the historic Feliciana-Plains area from this new trend of Cultural and Heri-tage travelers. How many other areas around the USA would glad-ly trade places with the historic Feliciana-Plains area, bordered on one side by the Mighty Missis-sippi River and split by the Great River Road of route US Hwy 61!

On Monday, July 22, tourism officials from the 10-parish group, Southeast Louisiana Gumbo, em-barked on a week-long journey to promote their parishes, the region and the state of Louisiana.

Hosting events in Birmingham, Ala.; Atlanta, Ga.; and Washing-ton D.C., the Southeast Louisiana Gumbo group traveled by Amtrak train in an effort to raise aware-ness of the expansive variety of tourist destinations in the south-east Louisiana region.

The group consists of Ascen-sion, East Baton Rouge, East Fe-liciana, West Feliciana, Livings-ton, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, Tangipahoa, Washington and West Baton Rouge parishes.

Along with the delegates from the parishes, star of History Chan-nel’s “Swamp People,” Bruce Mitchell and his wife, Janet, went on the three city tour to help pro-mote the Southeast Louisiana re-gion. “I love it; talking to people and telling them about Louisiana,”

said Bruce Mitchell.Sharon Stam, one of the

founders of the Southeast Louisi-ana Gumbo group, and executive director of the West Baton Rouge CVB, said the tour focused on directing tourists to the 10-par-ish region, adding that New Or-leans is a great travel destination, but there is so much culture and history outside the city to visit. “I love New Orleans. Let them go to New Orleans, but let them come on out and visit some of the other areas,” Stam said. “There’s a whole other story outside the city.”

The group partnered with Amtrak, who provided transpor-tation for the five-day journey from Slidell, La., to Washington D.C. and back. “The Gumbo tour is all about taking the message of Southeast Louisiana, the culture, in particularly the food, as far out as we can get it,” said Jerome Trahan, Amtrak Senior Officer of Field Marketing.

Faye Talbot representing East Feliciana Tourism was in atten-dance on the tour.

“The Southeast Louisiana Gumbo Tour went great. I think we accomplished a lot for our re-gion, and I think we have increased awareness of what the Felicianas have to offer,” Talbot said.Stam said that the tour was a great suc-cess, and is already preparing for next year’s tour, which will start in Southeast Louisiana and go to Los Angeles, Calif.

The Southeast Louisiana Gum-bo alliance is partnered with Am-trak, Louisiana Office of Tourism and Louisiana Fish Fry Products. They have produced a special SELA Gumbo spice and a sea-food cookbook that they distribute throughout the United States and beyond promoting the entire re-gion to potential tourists.

The group’s website, www.se-lagumbo.com, is a great resource for residents and visitors of South Louisiana.

Regarding his employment at RKM Primary Care, Dr. Chaney says, “I am excited about my employment at RKM and I enjoy coming to work because of the family atmosphere and the quality of service we provide. It is rewarding to know that I am able to help a group of individuals that is of-ten unable to receive the services we

provide, either because they have no insurance or limited ability to pay. The sliding scale fee for service allows me to help more people than possible in a private practice situation.”

Warding off evil spirits. This is a photo of Rose Smith’s bottle tree overlooking Highland Lakes in Ethel. Bottle trees have a spiritual aspect as well as an ornmental one. Legend has it that hollow glass vessels first appeared in 1600 BC Egypt and that superstition from that era has it that roaming evil spirits would enter the bottles at night and be destroyed by the morning daylight. Often the bottles were blue because of the color’s association with water which was thought to repel evil spirits. Rose’s tree is composed of bottles, many of them antiques, of different colors because according to her, “We ain’t taking any chances!”- submitted by Ron Smith

At JES Teamwork Builds Success

Jackson Elementary School is on track to excellence. During the 2012-13 school year, the percentage of Louisiana students proficient on third through eighth grade LEAP and iLEAP tests increased by 1 percent. That number grew in East Feliciana Parish by 5 percent, tied for second greatest growth of any district in Louisiana. Jackson Elementary more than doubled that amount, increasing in proficiency by 13 percent. The JES fam-ily is ready to build on that outstanding growth during the 2013-14 school year. “We’re proud of what our outstanding students accomplished with the great family, community, and teacher support, and we know they will continue to impress us with their hard work during the upcoming school year,” noted JES principal Megan Phillips.PHOTO ABOVE : JES welcomes new teachers with training sessions on the JES Way before official district training begins.
