RESEARCH AND CREATIVE ACTIVITIES:
My area of focus is on chronic health conditions, health beliefs and behaviors among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Current projects examine diabetes fatalism among the Plains tribes, smoking cessation, the cultural constructions of pain and depression among AIAN cancer patients and survivors. I am currently expanding into Indigenous populations research. 1990 - 1996 Principal Investigator, American Indian Cancer Control Project (R01), CAIRE, Berkeley, CA. Five-year
$1.7M smoking cessation researches project targeting 18 California Indian clinics. Funded by NIH/NCI. 1993 - 1998 Principal Investigator, American Indian Women's Talking Circle (R01), CAIRE, Berkeley, CA. A four-
year $1.2M cervical cancer research intervention project targeting California's Indian population in Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and four rural-reservation areas. Funded by NIH/NCI.
1994 - 1997 Principal Investigator, Pathways to Health (R25), CAIRE, Berkeley, CA. A three-year educational project
aimed at developing culturally sensitive breast cancer training materials for physicians and patients (communications, patient rights, and resources), $350,000. Funded by NIH/NCI.
