what will keep a salami slice in his back pocket
stank of pepper and slime
he wanted to savor it
at a later date
on a cleaner, shinier plate
between two soft slices of bread
with spicy brown mustard he bought the slice in a sandwich
from a gas station vending machine
lost on the side of the highway
but on second thought
he hid it away,
slipped it into the seat of his jeans
