Federico Infante received his BFA from Finis Terrae University (Santiago, Chile) in 2002 and graduated in Spring 2013 with his MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

He was the recipient of the Uanlane Foundation Scholarship (2012), the Conicyt Scholarship (2009), and the Juan Downey Grant (2004). He has had several successful solo and group exhibitions in Chile. Since his introduction to BDG in Spring 2013, his work has been adopted into private collections across the US and internationally, including France, Belgium, Germany and Singapore.

His works, greatly inspired by the Chilean landscape, are unique in their juxtaposition of abstraction with figurative sections and detailed architectural images. From a hazy, unclear mist, a figure holding a musical instrument might emerge. From the darkness, we might see a set of stairs, rendered with incredible precision, leading into the unknown. He seamlessly blends the genres together to create stunning works on paper and canvas.

“I grew up in a place where I was forced to develop my powers of contemplation. The magnificence of the Chilean landscape changes and challenges your perspective. It made me think clearly about my decision to become an artist. For me, this was the right path.

New York and its people have altered my creative process in a beautiful and positive way. Hidden in this city are images more mysterious than any I could ever imagine. The challenge of a new painting lies in each new day.”

The reflexive psychology in Federico’s paintings is based on an intuitive painting process. In every im-age, the viewer can see the painting’s first layer, the beginning of the artwork. A consecutive and me-thodical accumulation of layers comes next. This part of the work resembles an abstract interaction with the image similar to what the Abstract Expressionists did. However, this is how Federico searches for a suggestive and fertile atmosphere that gradually brings the idea of the painting into focus. A character or environment will appear; a figure will define the meaning of this abstract process. All of this leads him to find a connection to or dialogue with his immediate surroundings. This reveals a reflexive and suggestive introspection, a beautifully constructed image that lets the audience find themselves in Federico’s imaginary landscape.
