identifying, inventorying, and protecting rare plants, animals, andcommunities as well as protecting and managing water and soilresources while maintaining public access and encouraging publicuse.

Mason Neck offers a variety of educationalprograms including guided bird watching, canoetrips, volunteer programs, night hikes, and teacherworkshops. The Junior Rangers and Wee Rangersprograms invite children to participate in hands-onlearning projects. The park also hosts the annualElizabeth Hartwell Environmental Education Day in

Mason Neck State Park is focused on conservationand education. Protecting the land while informingpeople about the importance of habitat preservationand smart land management practices drive park
activities. With no overnight camping, there are fewfacilities and buildings on the property. There is noneed for cabins or laundry facilities. There is alsolimited parking and no storage spaces available. Theboat launch is for car top boats only, as in canoesand kayaks; boat trailers are not allowed. Onecovered shelter provides 10 picnic tables and two
grills and there is one playground by the boat launchfor public use.

The park attracts several migrating and non-migrating species of birds, including bald eagles,
herons, tundra swans and assorted species of duck. Bald eagles also inhabit the area. The parkboasts several hundred acres of hardwood forests consisting of oaks, holly, hickory and otherspecies of trees. In addition, several wetland areas are also found in Mason Neck.

The Commonwealth of Virginia Parks andNatural Areas Bond Act of 2002 was signed intolaw by the governor allowing the Commonwealthto sell bonds to raise funds to pay for capital
projects at state-supported parks andrecreational facilities. The Act has provided $119million over the past seven years to projectsacross the state. The bonds have made a bigimpact in Mason Neck through the 31-acreaddition to the Mason Neck West Park,$730,000 allocation for the construction of a new
staff and administrative office complex, and$200,000 in road improvements.
