Thank you boys! I'd just like to tell everyonehow grateful I am to young Alexander Oldcornand his• sharp-eyed friends in Turton Gardens.Alexander and co. saw someone from outsidethe village crash into my car that was parked inthe village car park in April and when she droveoff without leaving her details (but leaving a bigdent in my car's door and me £600 worse off),Alexander and his two friends took the timeand effort to take down the offender's detailsand put a note through my door. I'm nowfighting with her insurance company and I'mprobably going to end up £250 out of pocketbut I would be even worse off if Alexander andthe lads from Turton Gardens hadn't been soconsiderate. It's lovely that we have suchcommendable young people in our village.Jen Clements

Pat would liketo thank all her family and friends who havebeen so supportive and generous at all herfundraising events over the years. and now, not tomorrow, we can find love, laugh and have fun. We cannot flourish tomor-row, for tomorrow is never here and nevernow. But here and now is. Let’s live to full, let’sflourish, today. Tomorrow (with its troubles)said Jesus, will look after itself.

Have a flourishing summer!

Dear Friends,

I enjoy natural history programmes on the TVand I’ve particularly enjoyed “Ice Age Giants”recently. It’s odd to think that the lastMammoths and Mastodons were around onlya few thousand years ago. I would love tohave seen them. Yet the history of the worldis about succeeding species - one re- placinganother. A few, like the shark, have survivedfor millions of years, whilst others have comeand gone to be replaced in nature’s complexinterdependent relation- ships by newspecies.

Humans today play a disproportionate part inthat process and many species are disappearingrapidly. It’s important to remember that re-placement is a natural process. The problem isthat we have accelerated that process and dis-torted it. And that must stop if the world is toretain a healthy biodiversity.

But no species is here for ever. The plants andanimals have their time, and the geologicalrecord shows how the earth itself has gonethrough geological epochs of immense lengths. But the universe itself is slowly, unimaginablyslowly, running down until there is nothing hap-pening anywhere!

That tells me that every moment is precious. Igrew up in a society that had a habit of puttingall its effort into the future. Now was a time tobe endured. One of my senior clergy colleagueswas hard to work with because he was so con-cerned with the next job that he never reallyconcentrated on the job in hand. And he neverfully enjoyed it either, I don’t think.

“We flourish like the flower of the field; whenthe wind goes over it is gone, and its place willknow it no more”. I often read that at thegraveside at funerals. But far from being sad ormorbid I find it uplifting and positive. It tells meto flourish. But flourish here and now. Here andnow is the only time we have. And here

LINCOLN

The FeckenOdeon’s Summer Seasoncontinues with Steven Spielberg’s

“Lincoln” which is showing on Friday, 5thJuly at 8pm.

Perhaps only Americans are able to veneratetheir former leaders to such a degree - and yetBritish actor Daniel Day Lewis makes thepresident human, flawed even - but ultimatelydriven in the pursuit of his worthy goals. This isperhaps not the film for action lovers but whatit lacks in spectacle it makes up for in tension, intrigue and sheer drama. Mr Day Lewis earnedhis Oscar - no-one living can know how Lincolnmoved, how he talked or what he felt at timesof stress but Mr Day Lewis is an actor whowears his role like a second skin and feels itdown to the nerve endings - it’s totallyconvincing. This is acting of the highest order.

The film covers the period from the latterstages of the civil war through the abolition ofslavery to Lincoln’s death. It’s a very Americanstory but the amazing performances andcompelling direction make this a story to appealto everyone.

Tickets for all the summer shows are on sale at TheVillage Shop and The Rose & Crown. Book by phoneon 0844 8700 887 or online at...

ENID’S BLIGHTY - VINTAGE FUNOn the evening of July 20th The Square will betransformed into an earlier incarnation as weenjoy an evening in those halcyon days vaguelyevoked by Enid Blyton’s Secret Seven stories -or perhaps even in the era of Just William. TheVillage Green (The Square) will be cunninglydisguised as... a village green - complete withduck pond and maypole. There’ll be plenty to enjoy for youngsters andoldsters alike - traditional things to eat, traditional games to play and lashings oftraditional things to drink. In fact it’ll be sotraditional that such a place probably neveractually existed - so, come and wallow with usin our imagined but cosy vision of an EnglishCountry Fair complete with Morris Dancers,The O’Cajunal PlayBoys band, three legged sackraces, catapults and tin cans, stripy humbugs, beefy pies, dogs called Rover, fruity crumbles(with lashings of custard) and English ales andcider. The village school will be doing a MaypoleDance (well, the weather was lousy in May) andthere’ll be a traditional Tuck Shop and aTraditional Korner Cafe

OUR OWN HOMELY CHARITY....It’s all in aid of the upkeep of The Square whichis owned and maintained for the village byFeckenham Village Amenity Trust - a registeredCharity. The Square doesn’t belong to theCouncil - it isn’t maintained by any municipalbody - it’s ours! This annual Fun fundraiserprovides the major part of the money neededto keep the village’s centrepiece in good order. All the work is done by the volunteers of TheSquare Management Committee so pleasesupport their efforts by coming along andenjoying yourself!Saturday, 20th July - from 6.30on The SquarePlease note that this is a fundraising event. Therewill be a well stocked bar and food at veryreasonable prices so please don’t bring your own!Every penny taken will be used to look after ourvillage green.
