Lisa, 47, wanted to be a foster mum aftergoing through the care system as a childherself. There was no foster carer to look afterher so she grew up in children’s homes; butshe enjoyed the experience and is now usingit to help others. She says “I know what it’s liketo be at both sides of the table, so I can feel alot of empathy”

Now she is caring for a 14 year old girl withbehavioural difficulties, alongside her own 18year old son.

She says “It’s going really well. It’s hard goingand challenging, but it gives rewards to bothof us. It’s great to see the changes in her behaviour”.

“It’s a 24 hour commitment, but it’s very good. It’s a lot better than a 9-5 job and there are alot of benefits. You can really draw on your lifeexperiences and you don’t need any qualifications. If you’ve got a good heart, thatis your qualification”.

The single mum gave up her full time job andstarted working for one of i-want-to-foster.com fostering agencies about 2 yearsago.

The mothering instincts brought on by the

Fostering – The new lifestyle career

Could you be someone who could open uptheir heart and home to a vulnerable child?Foster caring is a very special role and fostercarers come from a variety of backgroundsIt is rewarding both emotionally and finan-cially.

birth of her son, awakened Lisa’s desire to foster. Having worked in residential homes forchildren, she wanted to break free from rulesand regulations and be able to trust her instincts as a mother and applied to becomea foster carer through local fostering recruitment agency i-want-to-foster.com

The application process, in which the agencychecks an applicant’s criminal record, takespersonal and professional references and examines every part of their history over a period of months.

This is the part that some applicants reallyenjoy. As Lisa says “You go back along memory lane. You go back through your pastlife and it’s full of discovery. You learn thingsabout yourself you don’t think would upsetyou or make you laugh, but they do”.

A social worker is on hand to help applicantsthrough the process along with a very supportive, caring and professional team at i-want-to-foster.com Head Office based inWestcliff-on-Sea. The team recently movedto new, larger premises to cope with demandand have improved therapy rooms, officespace and meeting areas, offering better facilities to staff, foster carers and children.

nless you’re a cross between the RussianPresident, Vladimir Putin, and Mother

Theresa, you’ve probably already failed to keep yourNew Year resolutions. You know, drink less, go to thegym more, yada yada….

So, instead of putting yourself through the self-loathingnightmare of breaking a series of rigid decisions, promise yourself to live more in the moment and dowhat makes you feel great in 2013.

Here are my simple and easy rules to beat the Januaryblues….

Take your make-up off every night - Wakingup with mascara halfway down your face is never agood look. Remove all traces to reduce the chances ofspot outbreaks.

Smile more - The most beautiful thing you can wearis your smile. And it can also take years off your face.Smiling lifts facial muscles, making you look happier, younger and sexier!

Breathe deep - When it all gets too much and youfeel you're about to explode: take time out. Count to ten.Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose, filling yourlungs fill with air, and then exhale through your mouthuntil you feel empty. You will calm down almost immediately.

Get your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks - It'syour crowning glory after all, so make sure you keepyour locks in tip-top condition. Book your next appointment while you are at the hairdressers, so youdon't forget.

U

O

De-clutter - Get yourself off to a fresh start by havinga clear out of all those cosmetics you just don't wearor are seriously past their best. Besides, you’ll havemore space for new goodies!

Feed your skin - Moisturising your skin everymorning and evening helps it to appear vibrant, youthful and radiant. If you’re dehydrated, wrinkleswill develop easier and appear deeper.

Wear SPF30 every day - Even in the middle ofwinter. It will protect your skin from harmful UVA/UVBrays.

Clean your make-up brushes weekly -Youwash your face to keep it clean, so why use grimy, grubby brushes to apply your make-up just moments after? Wash them once a week to keepthem dirt and germ free.

Get a beauty buddy - Ask a friend to help keepyour new regime in check. It’s a great excuse to meetup every month, or so, for a massage or a manicure, and enjoy a good catch up over a glass of bubbles.

Remember, it’s not about being perfect, it’s aboutbeing you. My new rules will help you take ownership of your uniqueness and make the most ofthis exciting New Year!

Money Matters

sure that you have an up-to-date will in place. Many of us are living longer, but this meansthat there is a greater chance that you mayneed someone to look after your financeswhen you are older in the event that you can’t.

This is why people should consider appointinga relative or trusted family friend as an attorney who could step into the breach. It isjust as important for those who are fit andhealthy and of sound mind to have properplans in place for the future.

It is not just your own estate affairs that youneed to consider. It is also worth checking thatyour parents or grandparents affairs are set upto mitigate as much IHT as possible as wealth ispassed down through the generations.

Talk of estate planning is not the cheeriest ofsubjects and it is easy to put something off thatdoesn’t affect you today, or even in the near future. But it is a vital part of financial planningand once dealt with you can rest easy that theloved ones you leave behind will be lookedafter.

here’s a natural reluctance for youngerpeople to think about death and

getting older. You are in all likelihood forgingahead just getting on with life, perhaps climbing up the career ladder, buying a house, settling down with a partner and having children.

It’s a fast-paced world we live in and thinkingabout the future is often put on the backburner. After all, talk of wills, inheritance tax(IHT) and estate planning seems far removedfrom your day-to-day life.

But they are a vital part of financial planningand wealth preservation. Getting your affairs inorder could save you and your family a greatdeal of money and heartache.

Have you thought what would happen if theunspeakable was to happen and you died tomorrow? Have you, for instance, got suffi-cient life cover in place to take care of theloved-ones you leave behind?

Changes to the pension rules could trigger unwanted IHT . If you start to redirect your retirement savings over and above the new£50,000 limit into savings vehicles, such as ISAsor unit trusts, they will form part of your estate(not the case with pensions). It is now thereforeimportant to consider the IHT implicationswhen funding for your retirement.

A core part of any estate planning is making

nyone who watches the TV or reads thenewspapers will be very aware of how

strong the Asian market has become for antiquesand collectable items. There has been a vastincrease in the amounts paid for some Chineseitems and the Indian and Islamic markets arefollowing suit as their economies grow. A Chinesevase reaching £43 million hit the headlines, albeitit was never paid for.

This opens up a great opportunity for people whohave been hoarding things from previousgenerations, who perhaps travelled in the far east,to cash in while the market is hot, and there is nocertainty it will stay that way.

The best results seem to be coming from theprovincial auction rooms which are on line, suchas our own, because buyers perceive that theymay find a bargain there, even though they will becompeting in basically the same market as amajor London saleroom.

The demand isn’t just confined to ceramics, as youmight expect, but extends right across the boardto jades, jewellery, wood carvings, stone seals, pictures, ivories and even postcards. To make thebest prices things need not be ancient but shouldusually be pre-1950 and be in good condition.

Sadly the Japanese economy has taken a tumbleso that isn’t currently a great market butelsewhere across Asia demand is booming and

To help parents navigate some of thesebumpy paths, Thorpe Hall School’s Nurseryis launching a programme of informative“Ask the Experts” sessions starting thismonth. They are designed specifically forparents of pre-school aged children, last justan hour, are free to attend and are open toall - whether your child attends Thorpe Hall’sNursery or not.

n acquaintance of mine likes tojoke that her husband insists on

driving everywhere so fast, that she isgiven a ‘non-surgical facelift’ with eachtrip in his sports car. I was reminded ofthat phrase when I first saw the incredibleOralift brace.

This hygienic, plastic device that is wornin the mouth for just two hours, onceevery three days and really can help totone up facial muscles, reduce wrinklesand eye bags and restore a much moreyouthful look to the wearer.

Celebrity Fame

Oralift customers have also reportedfurther anti-ageing effects such as highercheekbones, smoother skin and a firmerjawline. Unsurprisingly, it has become a hitwith celebrities and royalty alike, includ-ing Tara Palmer-Tompkinson, actressSarah Parrish and Janan Harb, widow of King Fahd of Saudi Arabia.

Intrigued, I started to do some researchand was both surprised and delighted by

what I discovered. I think the Oralift is perfect for adults who have seen the effects of their advancing years and areless than thrilled by what they see in themirror but would never contemplate having surgery or Botox injections. Forthem, wearing this simple brace offers agenuinely, pain-free alternative, that alsoworks! That’s why I have decided to become the first person in South Essex tooffer the Oralift treatment and it is nowavailable at my two practices - Smiles onBroadway in Thorpe Bay and King’s Clinicin Leigh-on-Sea.

No Pain, All Gain!Patients can be fitted with their braces ateither practice and are also given a seriesof easy to follow instructions. Oralift is notpainful and the treatment itself is very discreet, as the brace can be comfortablyworn in the privacy of your own homewhilst reading, watching TV or preparingdinner.

It works by using your body’s capacity toheal itself and its ability to adapt to change. When a patient wears the Oralift appliance,it separates the upper and lower teeth byan amount much greater than the usual 1-3mm gap created when the facial mus-cles are relaxed. This gap is called the “freeway space” and the muscles in your facecan ‘recognize’ themselves.

This process involves greater protein activity for which muscles need more oxygen, and to achieve this, any capillarieswhich have been damaged due to ageingare repaired. This means this repair processis initiated by the muscles releasing collagen, which triggers the body's healingprocess, so counteracting the harmful effects of facial ageing.

Not Just for Smiles!Whether you’re talking or laughing whilstwearing the Oralift, you are creating posi-tive therapy and fascinatingly, patientsusing Oralift have told me that while usingthe brace their symptoms of back, neck andshoulder pain, neuralgia and teeth grindinghave been greatly alleviated.

8/10 users look younger afterJanan Harb says: “This treatment has givenme back my youthful look and restored thevitality to my face.

It is amazing.” A research paper in theBritish Dental Journal qualified this bystating that eight of ten Oralift users werejudged to look up 5-10 years younger.

recipe of the month

Next month’s recipe:

‘Cheesy Walnut Biscuits’

Caramel Cheesecake

his is a no-cook cheesecake and thelovely flavour comes from the malasses-

rich sugars so you don’t have the worry of makingtricky caramel. Bit of a cheat really but fairly easyand good for entertaining.

Enjoy!

Ingredients

50g unsalted butter 140g plain digestive biscuits For the filling4 gelatine leaves 400g crème fraîche 100g light muscovado sugar 50g dark muscovado sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 400g ricotta 50g fudge , finely sliced icing sugar , for dusting

T

MethodGently melt the butter in a small pan over a lowheat. Place the digestives in a plastic bag and crushto fine crumbs using a rolling pin; you can also dothis in a food processor. Tip them into the pan withthe melted butter, stir to coat, then transfer to a20cm spring form cake tin (9cm deep). Using theback of a spoon, press them into the base, makingsure you seal the edges. Place in the fridge whileyou prepare the next stage.

If using leaf gelatine, place in a bowl, cover withcold water, soak for 5 mins, then drain. Pour 3 tbspboiling water over the soaked gelatine and stir todissolve.

Place the crème fraîche in a small pan with themuscovado sugars and a pinch of sea salt, thengently heat, stirring constantly with a woodenspoon until the mixture liquefies and the sugar hasdissolved. Give the mixture a quick whisk to get ridof any lumps. It should be warm, roughly the sametemperature as the gelatine solution. Stir thegelatine and vanilla extract into the crème fraîchemixture, transfer to a bowl and cool.

Place the ricotta in a food processor and whizzuntil smooth, then add the crème fraîche mixtureand whizz again. Pour this on top of the cheese-cake base. Cover with cling film and chill overnight. Run a knife around the sides of the tin, then undothe clip and remove it. Transfer to a plate or leavethe cheesecake on the base for ease of serving. Pilethe fudge flakes in the centre and dust with icingsugar. Cover and chill until required.

where frankly many elements of their diet shouldcontribute to high incidents of heart problems.Scientists believed a contributory factor was theirlove and consumption of red wine and furtherresearch demonstrates that the OPC’s present inred wine do indeed promote cardiovascularhealth.

But that’s not all! Research indicates that GrapeSeed Extract also helps promote brain, skin andeye health. It is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-in-flammatory and prevents plaque in the arteries. It is also one of the few antioxidants that canpenetrate the blood barrier to help protest brainand nerve tissue. It’s also linked to improvingmental alertness and helping prevent senility.

So with something that is so grape for yourhealth, why not give it a try this New Year? As always though, if you have a medical condition,do consult your doctor before taking any supplements.

or thousands of years across Europe, grapes have been cultivated as both a

food and a traditional remedy. However notmany people are aware that Grape Seed Extractis a secret weapon in promoting a healthy heart, reducing the risk of cancer and improving well-being in myriad ways.

In fact with all its antioxidant properties, GrapeSeed Extract packs a much bigger health punchthan the best known vitamin powerhouses – it is20 times more potent that Vitamin C and a huge50 times more effective than Vitamin E.

Grape Seed Extract is derived from the groundseeds of red wine grapes and belongs to thegroup of plant substances called flavanoids, which occur naturally in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, flowers and tree bark. Flavanoids areantioxidants that protect the body's cells fromdamage by unstable oxygen molecules called‘Free Radicals’. It contains something calledOligomeric Proanthocyanidin Complexes (OPC’s),which are believed to play an important role inpreventing heart disease and cancer.

Research on the benefits of Grape Seed Extractfirst began as a result of the so-called ‘Frenchparadox’ –when it was noted that French peopletend to have very low rates of heart disease

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas

his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Encore!hoeburyness High School hasalways had a fantastic reputation for

its musical ensembles and performances. The school has a jazz band, concert band, show band, a more recently formed marching band and many other smaller ensembles.

The school concert band recently enteredthe Regional Music Festival and placed second out of all entrants with a score of85/100 with honours. The show bandhelped the performing arts department puton a wonderful performance of the WestEnd show Our House, which was highly acclaimed and played to sell-out crowds atthe school just before Christmas. The jazzband has been playing gigs outside ofschool, most recently to celebrate a member of staff’s birthday at the Thorpe BayYacht Club, whilst the saxophone group

S have been playing at the Cliffs Pavilion andthe Civic Centre for celebratory events. Most of the older students who playinstruments in school are members of all ofthese ensembles, but unfortunately therehas been a decline over the last five years inthe number of year 7 students wanting tolearn traditional wind-band instruments atschool.

There has been a big lean towards singingand dancing due to the impact of shows likeGlee and High School Musical and an influxof drummers and guitar players due to thepopularity of console games that involvepretending to play a small plastic guitar toemulate the sound of a real guitar on screen. We realised that if the school didn’t actquickly, then the great ensembles that wehave in the school would soon dwindle innumbers and become no more.

So, Shoeburyness High School is currentlyembarking on a mission to get more youngpeople playing musical instruments.

We have decided to begin Band Method-style lessons with a class in year 7.The school has bought every student in theclass instruments ranging from flutes andclarinets to trumpets and saxophones andthe students are learning how to play theseinstruments during their music lessons.

The lessons are going fantastically well andthe students are already beginning to beable to read music and to make noises onthese instruments.

The students seem really enthused andhave been invited to join a club that themusic staff of Shoeburyness High Schoolrun every Tuesday night from 7pm til 9pm.The club is called C-side Crusaders and isbased in the music department at theschool. Every Tuesday, students are taughthow to play specific parts on theirinstruments to perform as part of a largermusic ensemble. The C-Side Crusaders wind

Shoeburyness High School

band presents a fantastic opportunity forboth students at Shoeburyness High Schooland the local community to learn how toplay a wind or percussion instrument as partof a larger ensemble.
