    Kicks Off2013!

    2

SCFA kicked o our 2013 campaign with our General

Member Meeting in February. At the meeting, we were

able to re-cap last years successes, and discuss all our

activities and plans or 2013. We enjoyed video slide-

shows o our our-legged residents, and our volunteers in

action (both coming to a SCFA youtube channel near you).

We laughed during our Silly Pet Picture Contest with

entries rom over twenty members, and set to the music

    o Respect rom Aretha Franklin.

And speaking o Franklin, our (un)ocial mascot presented

a video o how we can get the word out about our

organization and shelter, which also will be making a

YouTube debut soon. Further, we enjoyed resh baked

cookies (thanks volunteers, Tara and Andi), and were able

to hear rom our board members and committee chairs

regarding operations and upcoming opportunities. And

last, we were reminded o our upcoming board elections

    (more inormation to ollow).

So, thank you to the members that were part o the ty

strong who attended. I hope you liked the new ormat,

and are spreading the word to our brethren who may have

missed the meeting. Im hoping that everyone will be

looking orward to our Fall General Meeting / Volunteer

Appreciation Event (details still to come).

I you have any ideas on how we can continue to improve

our meeting, please let me know. Dont orget all our

upcoming events (Open Houses, Dog Walk, Tricky Tray,

Shake-A-Cans, Adoptions & cleaning, socializations, etc.).

Please help out where you can, the animals really

appreciate it, and the rewards are impossible to measure.Thank you or all you do, we would not be as successul

in nding new homes or our riends without YOU.

The Paris Hilton EectI have read that Chihuahuas are the second most

common breed o dogs in shelters, pit bulls being the

rst. Chihuahuas became popular and desirable ater

Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and other Hollywoodstarlets brought them into the limelight. Films like

Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Legally Blond added to

the breeds popularity. Now, years later, these dogs

are fooding the shelters, especially in Caliornia.

Because they are so small and were in high demand

    breeders jumped on the opportunity.

Stories o horrible Chihuahua puppy mills requent the

news. Recently in Ohio, a puppy mill with 280 Chihuahuas

was ound only ater one o the owners died suddenly o

a heart attack. Seeing photographs and video ootageo crates lled with dogs barely existing in lth is

    sickening, to say the least.

Rosie, my black and tan Chihuahua was bred by her

ormer owner and then they decided they didnt want

her anymore. Rosie was very earul o meeting new

people when I rst saw her but it was love at rst sight

or me. She reminded me o a pint sized Rottweiler.

And she matched my Rotti/Shepherd mix. The shelter

was really crowded at the time and Rosie was in a little

    crate in Steelers old oce.

Katie asked me i I would like to oster her until she could

get spayed with my oster kittens the ollowing week.

When I brought her home, she barked or the rst 2 hours,

non stop. I even called Katie at one point desperate tomake her more comortable. Katie said she would settle

down and she did. That was October 2009 and we have

    been inseparable since!

In July 2010 I walked into the eral cat room and ound

another little Chihuahua in need o a second chance.

A ew small dogs were in the eral room as the shelter

was very crowded at that time. The little white oxy

looking Chihuahua mix caught my eye rom the start.

Katie ound her walking all alone on a busy street.

She was so cute and I thought she would make a greatbest riend or Rosie. I asked i I could take the little

girl home or reworks night but she had already been

    matched with a shelter employee.

The ollowing week, the little white chi mix was back at

the shelter and ready or adoption. I did not hesitate to

take her home. I struggled with naming her. I thought

about the name Grace but was also considering calling

her Lily ater a shelter avorite o mine. I did decide on

Lily, which is ortunate because the one thing Miss Lily

    does not have is grace.

Lily is so riendly and sweet and does the cutest little dance on her hind legs. Katie thinks she may be mixed with

Shiba Inu. Rosie is a purebred Chihuahua. When I brought home a very, very old Shepherd/Rottweiler mix Stella,

Rosie quickly showed her she was the boss by biting Stella directly on the nose. Sweet little Lily went right to the toy box,

picked out a stued toy and brought it right to Stella! When Stella passed, Lily made me laugh when she got her head

stuck in a box o tissues and ran around the living room!

Rosie and Lily are the best o riends. They snuggle and sleep together and every night we have Chihuahua wrestling

on the couch when the two o them play. They are the rst dogs to the ence to remind the Rottweilers next door they

are in charge o this part o the neighborhood.

Chihuahuas make great pets. They are wonderul little dogs that can do well in apartments or in homes. Chihuahuas

can be barkers, especially when aced with larger dogs or meeting new people. Because they are so small, there are

some concerns. Rosie cannot be let outside by hersel because a hawk could pick her or lunch as she is only ve pounds.

LIly weighs ten pounds. Harnesses must be used so that pressure rom a collar and leash is not on their trachea. You also

have to be careul not to let them jump too much rom high suraces since they are so small. I still look at Rosie and cant

believe she is a dog sometimes, even ater 3 years. I you are thinking o adding a small dog to your house, Chihuahuas are

    wonderul companions.

Remember to rescue though, we never want to buy rom pet stores

where the pups come rom puppy mills!

Socialization VolunteersFor volunteers attending Thursday night socialization at the shelter, there

are some changes you will need to remember:

1Wear an SCFA volunteer t-shirt so that you will be easy to distinguishrom the general public.2A Team Leader will be present to oversee adoptions and help answerquestions the public may have.3You are not expected to have to work with the public.4The Socialization Leader will still be present to help you.

    5

Be aware that members o the general public may be present;be respectul.

6Do not allow members o the general public to handle the animals(until they have completed the pre-adoption orm).7Members o the public should only be present in the entry area, the cat adoption room, and the ront dog runs.I you have any questions about this, eel ree to contact Gerry Harris at

My Chinchilla My HeartI was a new volunteer with SCFA working my 2nd

rotation at the Shelter. I had just started college and

was ready to take on the world!! Then I saw himthis

cute ball o salt and pepper ur sitting in the adoption

room and knew I had to take him home! Someone had

let him in a plastic wheel in ront o the shelter door in

    the pouring rain.

We already had two rescue dogs and there was a list

o people who had already put their name to a waiting

list to adopt this precious baby. I had previously raised

a guinea pig or 8 years but knew nothing about

Chinchillas so I talked to everyone in every local pet

shop to get up to speed so I could take on the real

challenge o convincing my dad!!! You see my dad hadraised all types o animals including birds, dogs, cats,

cavies, rats, mice, exotic sh and iguanas and he laid

the entire roadmap out or me in what to expect over

the lietime o a Chinchilla but I persevered and he

    nally said yes.

I was shopping with my mom when I got the call rom Katie that I was selected to take him home!!!

I gave such a scream that the sales people came running with concerned aces. When I nally brought him

home, it was obvious that he was hand raised and handled quite oten but he had scars rom what were

probably battles with other cage mates along with a severe eye inection.

I will orever be grateul to the person who cared enough to bring him to the shelter. He looked like a Frank so

that became his given name. Ater a ew short months o TLC he settled right into the amily.

Chinchillas are aectionate and intelligent animals and need the same in return. Regardless o the type o day

Ive had, I always put aside Frankie time and his little hugs always perk me up and he has wiggled his way

into my heart. When you think about adopting a rescue pet, consider all the our legged creatures or they

all need love and orever homes.

Lubranos Fundraiser Easy & DeliciousThank you all who participated in the Lubranos Pizzeria

Fundraiser on February 6th. This event raised $100 or

our our-legged riends, and allowed us another avenue

to get the word out about SCFA. These type undraisers,

which are easy to set up (nd a partner restaurant, have

a fyer printed up, get the word out, and enjoy some

delicious donations), and help get the word out to new

audiences, are ways to keep SCFA in peoples thoughts.

Thank you Judy H. or your work on this event.

Now I know that $100 doesnt sound like a lot o money

raised, but part o what we are doing this year with our

    Marketing/Outreach Committee, etc. Involves letting

as many people as possible know about SCFA and the

Franklin Township Animal Shelter. Remember that more

exposure means more potential adopters, and more

animals going to their orever homes. So, i you have an

idea or a undraising event (big or small), please reach

out to Rose and Linda. Your ideas will determine how

successul we can be in 2013 and beyond.

The Stress Factory EventThank you to all those who came out to support SCFA

Sunday night at The Stress Factory Comedy Show!

SCFA volunteers were out in ull orce. I hope you all hada un night o laughs.

Thank you to those olks who helped to spread the word

and sell tickets, we had a great turnout o non-volunteers.

In addition, and up until 30 minutes beore the show, we

had people coming in looking to purchase tickets on

behal o SCFA due to fyers they saw posted around

Somerset, how awesome is that!! (posting those SCFA

    events fyers really does work)

We raised $1,170 or the critters we support!

We were thrilled since our goal was to hit $1,000!

Thank you again or your continued support!

A BIG Thank You to our top sellerWendy Kerekes!!, who sold awhopping 25 Books!!!

SCFA would like to thank the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation or its very generous

In 2012, 418 amilies in Franklin Township with 520 dogs and cats took advantage
