FEBRUARY EVENTS AND PROGRAMS All events and programs take place in the Jax Makerspace in the Main Library unless otherwise noted. African Movement Dance Classes Saturdays, February 4, 11, 18 & 25, 11 a.m. – Noon Slip on your comfortable clothes and get ready to move! Each week instructors will teach different techniques in African dance. Douglas Anderson School of the Arts instructor Christa Sylla and others will lead the way. Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise Tuesday, February 7, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Join us for a preview of the documentary airing on PBS Frontline as we celebrate the life and works of Maya Angelou. Our friends at Hope at Hand will introduce us to writing poetry—it’s easier than you think! Queens & Seams Wednesday, February 8, 5 – 6:30 p.m. Featured artist Jovita Harper takes us on a textile adventure sharing the origins, prints and symbolism of her favorite African fabrics. She will also demonstrate how she creates her award-winning clothing. Pen Your Kesha Story Saturday, February 11, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Every name has a story. Yvette Hyater-Adams will show us how to craft the stories of our names in a format to pass on to our descendants and the world. Hyater-Adams is a 2016 Community Foundation Art Ventures grant recipient and regional envoy for the United States Department of Arts and Culture. Treat Yourself Wednesday, February 15th 4:30 – 6 p.m. Make Up and Head Wrap Demonstration In this month’s Treat Yourself program, local artist Ingrid Mathurin shares the latest make up trends. She will demonstrate a natural make up look and how to tie a coordinating head wrap. Come pamper yourself! What’s in a Name? Tuesday, February 21, 5:30 – 7 p.m. Inspired by JAX READS!/NEA Big Read selection The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri and the Kesha exhibition, we will examine what names mean to us and the people around us. Did you know some countries have restrictions or traditions regarding names? Join the discussion and share the stories behind your names and more. KESHA Collab Artist Workshops Saturday, February 25 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Featured artist Traci Mims will demonstrate her woodcutting process and take questions about her work in the Kesha exhibit.
