Dear Parishioners and friends of St. Lawrence:

Over the past few years, I have participated in a program

sponsored by Notre Dame for pastors of Catholic Schools. In

the middle of the first one, I had to return to Muncie for a

funeral, so I also went the following year. Just this morning I

received an email from a researcher at Notre Dame with a

survey asking about the impact of the sexual abuse crisis on

parishes and schools. For the most part, I can only guess or

surmise, but you know how it has impacted you and your

connection to the church as a whole and the parish in particular.

So, this brought about my thoughts to share with you and also

ask for your feedback. In regard to the local situation, please let

me know if you believe anything needs to be addressed or

implemented for greater safety of our children.

In the first parish that had a school, of which I was a pastor,

there was an episode of a person in the neighborhood who came

into the school through an unlocked door and held two 6th

graders at knife point in the restroom. Even though the police

came and brought an end to the event, the two students were

traumatized and one could not come back to school—overcome

by fear. The police informed us that three convicted offenders

lived within a block of the school. This opened my eyes and

sometime later a law passed that prohibited that from

happening. We had another girl report that she and her sisters

were being molested by their father. It went to court but the

jury “couldn’t believe that a father would do what the daughter

claimed.” The month after he was acquitted, he moved to a

remote area of Michigan with the four daughters. The mother

was out of the picture due to a drug problem. We had another

family from out of state enroll with a 7th grade boy and 5th grade

girl. After being expelled from the school, and the public

school, the police informed us that the 7th grader was really 17

and that the father ran a prostitution ring. When asked about the

5th grader, they told us that the girl had disappeared.

Sometime after I left St. Lawrence, I heard of abuse that had

occurred at St. Lawrence though I had never witnessed nor

experienced abuse myself.

It is devastating for families whose children have

experienced abuse. My sense from talking with people abused

as children is that their soul was shattered like glass and every

day is a challenge to try just to hold oneself together throughout

the day. As they struggle to hold it together, they have no

strength left to deal with the outside world – sometimes turning

to drugs to survive. Sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical

abuse is so damaging that many never recover from it. Some

do, many don’t.

The Diocese is making every effort it knows how to provide

a safe and protective environment for all people – especially the

youth who are most vulnerable. Go to the Diocesan website

http://dol-in.org/safeenvironment. I will review more of this in

next week’s bulletin. If you have been a victim as a child, you

are encouraged to call the Victim Assistance office 765-464-

4988.

GOD’S CALL

The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the

good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a

world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today’s

readings outline how the disciple is present in the world.

The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread . . .

shelter the oppressed . . . clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7).

Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive

to the urgent needs of others. Then Paul reminds his flock

that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or

wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and

fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally,

Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and

darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light

shine through their good deeds.

We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent,

however, that we have heard the word of God and been

awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word

and bring that presence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
