FEBRUARY 9, 2020
“Introibo ad altare Dei.” ………………………………………………………... …..Prayers at the foot of the altar
This year one priest * will be ordained for the Archdiocese of New York.
Years ago, St. Joseph’s Seminary Dunwoodie produced ordination classes of 30, 40 or better.
My own class of 1983 numbered 17 but that was then. This is now. Of my classmates three left, three have died, one is stricken by a stroke, one is in assisted retirement and one has been placed on leave. The rest of us are ageing.
Career end in the priesthood by retirement, suspension, death or departure is nothing new. What is new is that priests leaving the field are not being replaced by a commensurate number of priests coming out of the seminary.
Over the years, parishes have come to rely on International Priests (guests from other dioceses) to keep services going. This limited number receives provisional assignments as Parochial Vicars. However, there are not as many to go around as the curates, assistants or associates of yesteryear.
There also has been a reliance on priests who visit on Sundays from other assignments – such as teaching , administration, chaplaincy – or who, though retired, like to keep their hat in the ring by saying mass publicly.
Their parochial assistance is secondary to their own professional and personal needs. While we are happy to have them, they are under no obligation to us. Their situation can change and they can stop coming at any time.
What we have been hearing about in other parts of the country for years is now happening here. Because we cannot put solid reliance on visiting priests, foreign or domestic, and because we cannot expect many newly ordained priests any time soon, and because illness or death may strike a permanently assigned priest at any time, we must examine parochial situations with pru-dence and foresight.
The bottom line is that inconvenience is no longer a distant phenomenon experienced by others in far away places but a present reality that impinges upon us.
The words of our Lord are truer now more than ever: “The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.” – MT 9:37
“I * will go unto the altar of God.” …………………………………………………………………………...Psalm 43:4
