With the dawn of the new year, we continue to rejoice in
the birth of our Lord and Savior. Mary Queen is blessed
and thankful for all the gracious gifts that you provided to
our parish in the past year. Your prayers, support and

and share God's message of love and peace. This is a
message that is needed more than ever, but we cannot
continue to do the work of the Church without your help.
Prayerfully consider using our secure and easy to use
electronic giving program, Faith Direct.

Faith Direct will automatically process donations to the
offertory or any second collections of your choosing. To

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time: February 9th
That we let our light shine before others and be a bold
witness of our faith! “Let your light shine before others,
that they may see your good works and give glory to your
Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

The generosity of being a good steward of your gifts has
a positive effect on people and it is contagious! Good
works encourage more good works. Let your light shine!
Be careful to recognize that God is working through you
and don’t put yourself above the people you have been
called to help.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the
February 2, 2020 Stewardship Report is not
available this week. It will be reported in the
February 16, 2020 bulletin.

La Salette Reflections
Fr. Rene Butler, M.S

Weakness and Power
(5
th
Ordinary Sunday: Isaiah 58:710; 1 Corinthians 2:15;
Matthew 5:1316)
In many cultures, people prefer to shed tears in private
than where others can see them. Perhaps this is
because tears are sometimes seen as a sign of
weakness. From that point of view, Our Lady could
say, with St. Paul, “I came to you in weakness.”

In fact, much of what St. Paul says in today’s second
reading could be said of Mary at La Salette. This is
especially true of her wearing the crucifix: “I resolved to
know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ,
and him crucified.”

We have often noted that, according to Maximin and
Mélanie, the light of the Apparition emanated from that
crucifix. In John 8:12 Jesus says of himself, “I am the
light of the world.”

In this week’s Gospel, he reminds us that we, too, are
the light of the world. He also describes us as salt of
the earth.

It is hard for us to imagine tasteless salt. The
Beautiful Lady talks about blighted wheat, literally, but
the image could apply figuratively to her people. When
put to the test, what was their faith? It crumbled, like
the ears of wheat.

St. Paul also states, “I did not come with sublimity of
words or of wisdom,” and “My message and my
proclamation were not with persuasive words of
wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power.”
At La Salette, Mary went so far as to speak the patois,
the local dialect, typically associated with uneducated
rural classes, in contrast with theFrench that she used
at the beginning. And she spoke of things that her
people could understand.

Coming in weakness is not the same as being
powerless. It means that the power that we might show
is not ours, but comes from God. Mary’s simple words
had power, which she communicated to the children,
empowering them to make her message known.

How bright our light could shine, quoting Isaiah now, “If
you remove from your midst oppression, false
accusation and malicious speech; if you bestow your
bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted.”

All this and more we may be empowered to do, but,
always remember, the glory is God’s.

When children ask,
“Why do we have to go to Mass?”
We need to talk to God. When we go to Mass, we
speak to God through our singing, our communal re-
sponses and prayers, and our personal prayers from
the depths of our hearts.
People need our prayers. We can pray for other
people anytime, but when we pray for others during
Mass, we pray in a special way.
We need to stand up for what we believe. Being a
follower of Jesus is countercultural. At every Mass,
we have the opportunity to stand up and proclaim
what we believe publicly.
We need to acknowledge that we make mistakes.
At every Mass, we have the opportunity to review the
past week. We admit that we have sinned…..ask for-
giveness and we are assured that God still loves us.

Lenten Alms Giving Charity is a frequent and
important theme of the Gospels. As individual members
of Mary Queen, each of us is called to focus more
closely on almsgiving during Lent. Almsgiving is the
outward action of donating money or goods to the poor
as a reflection of your love for Jesus. This year during
Lent we are asking every person/family to donate the
following items to our Food Pantry. When you come to
Mass each weekend please place the items in the Food
Pantry Donation Box located in the church narthex.

It is better to give alms than to store up gold; for
almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin.

World Marriage Day February 9th
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your tremendous gift
of the Sacrament of Marriage. Enable us to grow in our
intimacy with You and with each other. Teach us the
beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more
one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our
communication with each other, and help us become living
signs of Your Love. Help us to be examples of
commitment, love, and service to our families and
children. Make us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for
at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of
Your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to Love in Jesus’
name and walk in His footsteps. Amen.
