HEALTHUPDATE

There have been confirmed cases of flu reported at Central Avenue School. As you know, flu is easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu in our school. I am also in contact with the Madison Board of Health. You can help prevent the spread of flu or help your child get better if he/she does get sick by following a few simple steps:

• Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. Provide antibacterial wipes in your child's lunchbox to ensure clean hands before eating.

• Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils.

• Teach your children to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues or to cover up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.

• Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults). Some people with the flu will not have a fever.

If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, call your pediatrician early. Some children may benefit from an antiviral medication if prescribed early.

Keep sick children at home. All children must be fever free for 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medications before they can return to school.

They should be tolerating a regular diet and not be tired or lethargic.

For additional information on the flu, go to www.cdc.gov/flu or contact your physician.
