NAMALAKA PARISH PROJECTS/PROGRAMS School Feeding Program: This program is sponsored by our Sister Parish, St. Brendan in the Archdiocese of

Seattle. Pupils from standard 1—8 receive porridge rightly called “Brendan Bowl” in honor of our donors.

Since its inception, this program has made several impacts namely:

A. School enrollment ratio has grown.

B. School attendance has improved greatly.

C. Less school drop-outs.

D. The passing rate has increased.

E. The community supports the program happily and their active partici-

pation is also directly felt. As of the second term, the direct benefi-

ciaries have come up to 2,218 pupils from 1,560 from when we

started the program. Indeed the program is growing in strength.

ANNOUNCEMENTS (Contact Andrea if you have questions or can help out.)

VACATION BIBLE CAMP dates July 9-13! Our theme is BABYLON.

Learn these great Bible stories—Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abedne-

go, and King Nebuchadnezzar. Lots of drama. Lots of fun! Sign up right

after Easter, or start helping with the planning. 3 OR 4 EXTRA-

ORDINARY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! On the last day of Vacation Bible

Camp (this year July 13) we need 3 or 4 strong determined adults from

1:00 to 5:00 (at the latest) to put away the tents, move heavy objects

to storage, and throw away a lot of trash & recycle. CAN YOU HELP?

These should be people who are not already volunteering

from July 9-13.

LEARNING ABOUT

OUR FAITH

Funerals

When his friend Lazarus

died, Jesus said to Laza-

rus’s sister Martha, “I am

the Resurrection and the

Life.” Christians live in the

assurance that Jesus will

never abandon us, and

that he has prepared a

place for us that we call

Heaven. When a person

dies the family is very sad.

But in the middle of the

sadness we come togeth-

er as family and friends to

be reminded that we have

the hope of eternal life

with Jesus. We remember

the person who has died

and we encourage each

other with this great hope.

Kids Alphabet Soup

W is for Wisdom, one of

the books of the Bible in

the Old Testament.

W is for Worship. We

come together to praise

God and to ask for his

help in our lives.

OLD TESTAMENT

Festivals of the Hebrews

in

Numbers and

Deuteronomy

What are the great festivals of the

Christian faith? Sunday of course.

And here are the main three.

Christmas We celebrate our

thanks that Jesus took on our

human nature and was born as a

baby.

Easter Christ is risen from the

dead, paving the way for us to live

forever.

Pentecost The Holy Spirit fills the

apostles with life and energy, the

Birthday of the Church.

What are the great festivals of the

Jewish faith? Sabbath every Sat-

urday.

Passover God led us out of Egypt.

Pentecost a harvest festival.

New Year celebrated in Septem-

ber.

Atonement We are sorry for our

sins.

Hannukah began in later centu-

ries.

NEW TESTAMENT

Jesus Begins his Ministry

Mark 1: 1-13

Four people named Matthew,

Mark, Luke, and John took on the

joyful work of writing down the

main events of Jesus’s life. Mark

may have been the first Gospel. As

you read through the Gospel of

Mark, you feel like you are rushing

along from one event to another.

In the first chapter we meet “John

the Baptizer,” also called John the

Baptist. He lived in the desert pre-

paring the people for the great

events soon to come. John taught

that repentance (true sorrow) was

our preparation for God’s for-

giveness of our sins. He baptized

Jesus at the beginning of Jesus’s

Ministry. At the baptism of Jesus,

God the Father spoke from heav-

en, and the Holy Spirit came down

in the form of a dove. Immediately

Jesus was sent into the desert for

40 days.

KNIGHTS CORNER Record Turn-Out for Pancake Breakfast

Over 200 people showed up for last week’s pan-

cake breakfast. With heartfelt gratitude, we thank

you fellow parishioners for joining us during our

celebration of Catholic Schools Week. The Knights

will be donating half of the net proceeds to St.

Brendan School to provide upgrades to the school’s

kitchen. We also had mini birthday cakes and sang

“Happy Birthday” to those born in January and we

gave away 4 tickets to the upcoming Matthew Kelly

retreat. To join the Knights, contact

Kevin Van Hollebeke 206-240-0275.

ST. BRENDAN WOMEN’S BOOK CLUB Sometimes its fun to read a book that gives you a gig-

gle or two. That’s what we’ll find when we read “The

Bad Catholic's Guide to Good Living: A Loving Look at

the Lighter Side of Catholic Faith, with Recipes for

Feasts and Fun by John Amirak and Denise

Matychowiak. Come discuss the cultural traditions of

our faith in a lighthearted manner Monday, February

26, at 7:00 pm in Brendan House Dining Room.

teers have also gleaned thousands of pounds of food to use to prepare our

Thursday meal and donate to shelters and food banks. Without all of the

many volunteer hours and donations, we would not have been able to support

so many in need throughout our community.

ONLINE GIVING

Every person’s finances

and family situation is dif-

ferent. Jesus makes it

clear that it matters not

how much one gives, but

that it is planned, calculat-

ed, at least some-

what sacrificial (see Luke

24:1-4), and not simply

from what is “leftover” at

the end of the month. We

propose the tithe (10%) as

the ideal every family can

consider working to-

wards. This means taking

steps to give 5% to one’s

parish, and 5% to other

charities or causes you

have personal passion for.

You can register online at
