VISUABLES - Holiness

Years ago I attended a preacher’s retreat at Tanda Bible Camp in Big Bear, CA. John W. Smith was the featured lecturer. John is a renowned author known for his “Hugs” books. He is also popular story teller in our fellowship. He has a powerful gift of weaving a story into the hearts of his audience. Stories help make tangible the invisible biblical principles that guide our lives. Tales of drama and laughter connect the hearers to a point. That’s what preachers want to do . . . make a point.

John is very good at making his point known. He combines life long Bible study with decades of ministry to lead his audience to a decision. A decision about what they are going to be, about what they are going to think and a decision about what they are going to do about it.

At this preacher’s retreat, Brother Smith’s focus was on the subject of holiness. He helped the ministers there renew their own holiness and rekindle their fires for helping others become more holy. I came back from the retreat with a clear need to fix my heart on the higher standard to which Jesus has called me. I desired to be sanctified in all areas of my life. I had a renewed dedication to be a holy husband, father, preacher, neighbor and friend. The following is a story I encountered shortly after attending John’s holiness retreat.

One day a young minister was being escorted through a coal mine. At the entrance of one of the dim passageways, he spied a beautiful white flower growing out of the black earth. "How can it blossom in such purity and radiance in this dirty mine?" the preacher asked. "Throw some coal dust on it and see for yourself," his guide replied. When he did, he was surprised that the fine, sooty particles slid right off the snowy petals, leaving the plant just as lovely and unstained as before. Its surface was so smooth and silky that the grit and grime could not adhere to it.

Father in heaven, just as that flower could not control its habitat, so we cannot help that we live in a world filled with the soot of sin. Your grace keeps us clean and unspotted though we are surrounded on every side. Empower us as we strive to remain pure in heart so that one day we may actually see Your radiant face. Lord, lead us not into temptation but continue to deliver us from evil. In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.

Blessings, <><John
