A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE" by Bud Ozar

In studying the effects of religion upon family relationships, researchers inform us hostility and prayer cannot coexist. You cannot be hostile towards someone for whom you are praying. Today’s Gospel encourages us: “Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who treat you badly.”

"Every child not allowed to be born, but un-justly condemned to be aborted, has the face of Jesus Christ, the Lord’s face...Life is al-ways, in all its phases and at any age, sa-cred…” Pope Francis

Dr. Bernard Nathanson on why he stopped doing abortions: ”I ran the largest abortion clinic in the world for 2 years. I had no conflicts whatsoever at the time I was doing the abortions. I changed my mind because the new scientific data which we were getting from advanced technology persuaded me that we could not indiscriminately continue to slaughter what was demonstrably a human being.” Taken from an interview with Bernard Nathanson, M.D., 1986 (the most famous abortionist in history) Compiled By Pro-Life Articles www.pro-lifearticles.org

Liturgy Notes The beginning of the Holy Gospel today reiterates the message of the Beatitudes we heard proclaimed last weekend. The po-etry as well as the ‘question & answer’ pattern are extremely similar. While these are not the Ten Commandments, these short phrases are indeed commandments. It, in reality, amounts to Jesus giving commandment of love. Hence, the reassuring message in the Psalm as well as the Gospel, deals with a theme of hope and love, with the understanding that if we hold these true, our reward will be great in heaven. This weekend, our music stems primarily from the message in the Responsorial Psalm, the Gospel verse and the Holy Gospel. At the Choral Eucharist, the Parish Choir will sing a motet version of the Psalm “Bless the Lord, O, My Soul” after the First Reading. Other hymns are based on loving one another, finding God through charity, forgiving and not being judgmen-tal of others faults and the promise of God’s assurance of His everlasting love for us. The hymns “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”, “Where Char-ity and Love Prevail”, “We Have Been Told” and “O Bless the Lord, My Soul” all perfectly tie in all the important points and messages of today’s liturgy. ~ Raymond Murphy, Director of Music

Heavenly Father, be with our men and women as they serve our country.

When they are faced with danger, Give them the courage of Michael the Archangel,

who was victorious over evil. When our soldiers are faced with difficult choices give them the discernment of St. Martin of Tours,

the soldier who remembered to aid the meek and helpless. When our soldiers are injured or forced to the sidelines,

give them the guidance you gave to St. Ignatius of Loyola, who turned a time of pain and recovery from a war wound

into a new life of trust in you. ~ Amen.

Parish Nurse Program The American Heart Association recognizes February as National Heart Disease aware-ness month. .

Risk Factor for Heart Disease

High Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a soft, fat-like substance found in the blood and in all the body’s cells. When it builds in the inner walls of your arter-ies over time, it hardens and turns into plaque. That plaque can narrow the artery walls and reduce blood flow, which you guessed it, can cause blocks that can lead to blood clots, heart attacks or strokes. You might be surprised to learn that your body actually needs cho-lesterol to function normally and to stay healthy. But what we need to remember is that our bodies are fully capable of making all the cholesterol it needs. It’s what you put into your body (yes, we mean those salty snacks and baked goods), and in some cases your family health history that causes trouble. It’s also important to note that all cholesterol isn’t created equally. There are two types: good and bad. And understanding the differ-ence and knowing the levels of each in your blood is critical. Too much of one type, or not enough of another, can put you at risk. Cholesterol Types: LDL (bad) cholesterol: This is the type that, when too much is present in the blood stream, can clog your arteries and put you at risk for a heart attack or stroke. It’s produced naturally by the body, but is also inherited from your parents or even grandparents, and can cause you to create too much. Eating a diet high in saturat-ed fat, trans fats and cholesterol also increases how much you have. HDL (good) cholesterol: It is believed by some experts that high levels of this type of cholesterol removes excess plaque from your arteries, slowing its buildup and helping to protect against a heart attack. Low levels, however, can actually increase your risk. Triglycerides: This is a form of fat made in the body. If you have an inactive lifestyle, a diet high in carbohydrates, smoke, are obese or drink too much alcohol, it can raise total cholesterol levels, and lead to high LDL and low HDL levels. Putting an end to bad cholesterol: Previously, treatment guidelines directed healthcare providers to focus on treating their patients to target goal levels for total choles-terol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. However, current prevention guidelines suggest more is needed. Your specific numbers are still important, but the best treatment considers your specific numbers and your overall risk assessment and reduction opportunities. Working with your healthcare provider to customize the approach to treat your risk will achieve better results. Your heart is in your hands. And heart disease is largely pre-ventable if you work to lower your risks. So get on the horn and schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to learn what numbers you’re dealing with so you can lower them if you need to. Don’t wait to discover it after a heart attack strikes! Please come downstairs and have your Blood Pressure checked. Meet our Parish Nurses, gather health information, and have your questions answered. We look forward to collaborating with all of you to promote a Healthy 2019 New Year!

2019 B/P screenings will take place the first weekend of every month.

Sister Ann’s Recipes… Raspberry-Pecan Pinwheels

2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 refrigerated rolled pie crusts 1/2 cup raspberry jam 1/2 cup pecans, finely chopped

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Sprinkle a clean work surface with 1 tablespoon of the sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of the cinnamon. Unroll one pie crust, place it on the cinnamon-sugar mixture and press gently to help the mixture adhere to the crust. Spread 1/2 the jam evenly over the crust and sprinkle 1/2 the pecans over the top. Starting at one end, tightly roll the dough into a log. Repeat with the remaining ingredients. Trim the ends of each log and cut into one inch thick slices and stand them on edge (sugar dough side up and down) on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them 2 inch apart. Bake until golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Transfer to baking rack to cool completely.

Vocation Reflections “Be merciful, just as your Father is merci-ful.” That God is good to the deserving does not surprise us but that God shows goodness and mercy to the rude and the mean is more than we can fathom. As a priest or religious

you can show mercy and goodness to the downtrodden. If you are being asked to consider a vocation as a priest, brother or sister, call Fr. Michael Casey, Director of Voca-tions, Archdiocesan Pastoral Center, Tel. 860-761-7456, e-mail [email protected] or visit the web at www.hartfordpriest.com.
