WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Ryan Grip & Brie Groves
From Our Pastor
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Recently, many of you have asked me a question about the homilies that I give at Mass. The question
basically goes like this: “I felt like your homily was aimed right at me! Were you talking to me?” I always
chuckle when I hear this and I very much appreciate the question. And the compliment! But the
answer I give is always the same. I have never intentionally directed a homily at any particular
person. That would be very embarrassing and pastorally inappropriate. To be honest, if I’m
ever intentionally directing the homily at anyone, it would have to be myself! However, if my
homilies do strike a chord and you sometimes feel that they are somewhat helpful for your life
in Christ, I am most pleased. That is my intention every weekend when I speak to you.
Preaching homilies is one of my favorite things to do as a priest. I enjoy preaching and
consider it an enormous privilege as well as a great responsibility. When I was in seminary, my
teachers and mentors told me that I should start preparing a homily the Monday before the
coming weekend. Well, that doesn’t always happen – especially with multiple parishes! I
typically glance at the readings for the coming weekend on Tuesday or Wednesday. By
Thursday or Friday I construct the homily and on Saturday afternoon I practice it. Sometimes an idea or a theme
comes quickly for the homily. Other times, it’s like pulling teeth! I always try to first say a prayer to the Holy
Spirit before I begin preparing the homily.
As many of you know, I always like to start with a story either from my life or from some other source. I
do this to ground the homily in everyday life and to catch our attention. I hope that people don’t think that I’m
always talking about myself! Also, I typically use stories from outside of our parishes. The reason for this is to
not betray any confidences. Trust me, you’ve given me lots of material for the future! After the opening story, I
typically move quickly to the readings of the day and then to the teachings of Jesus and His Church. You might
have noticed that I vary the homily subjects from weekend to weekend. Some are about the Bible readings
themselves while others have to do with the basics of our Catholic Faith. Sometimes I preach on a moral subject
and other times I touch on a topic that is recently in the news. Regardless of the subject, I try to make the
homilies relevant to life today.
On most weekends I preach four times – one time each for our four Masses. Typically, the homily does
change a bit each time. Sometimes after a few times of preaching I get tired of it and write another. Some
homilies work better than others. I have my favorites, but I also have some that I don’t particularly care for. The
blessing is that when it bombs, I get to try it again next week! I do memorize the homilies because I find that it
makes for a smoother delivery and more earnest conversation. I typically have six points that I make and I
memorize these six points and construct the homily around them. I typically preach for 10-12 minutes, more if I
get excited…!
The bottom line is that I thank God for giving me this opportunity to talk about Him. I also thank all of
you for being willing to listen! If you have any suggestions for homily topics, please let me know. And finally,
please know that the homily is meant for everyone in the congregation. If you feel it was meant just for you,
that’s probably the Holy Spirit knocking. Please let Him in! May God Bless You.
Fr. Girotti
